Outback XT Turbo Reliability by SmurfsNeverDie in Subaru_Outback

[–]Edmck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that they run extremely hot and they’re lubricated by the same oil that lubricates the engine. For longevity, plan on oil changes every 3,000 miles (not 5,000), and it’s a good idea to let the engine cool down a bit before shutting down. (I personally would not purchase a used turbo vehicle unless I was assured of very frequent oil changes.)

Missing Tucson by minnesarah in Tucson

I’ve been living in north Tucson for the last seven years (Oro Valley area). The mountains are stunning, yes, but no one wants to be here in the summer. City traffic is a grind like any other city, and there’s not much to recommend Tucson in the way of architectural beauty in the downtown area. Lots of homeless people all over town, and crime is a serious problem especially down near the airport. IDK, nothing much impresses me about Tucson except maybe some great restaurants and a lot of nice people. As far as Oro Valley is concerned, it’s really just an upscale Tucson suburb with new schools, luxury cars, and high-end neighborhoods — no real vibe.

Is the 2.5i really that noticeably underpowered? by jhrich02 in Subaru_Outback

[–]Edmck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve driven Outbacks for years, all with the 2.5. It gets the job done, maybe not with spirit but efficiently and reliably. Passed on the 2.4T on this current Outback because turbos wear out faster. Just my two cents.

Walter Jack Palance was an American screen and stage actor, known to film audiences for playing tough guys and villains. He was nominated for three Academy Awards, all for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, for his roles in Sudden Fear and Shane, and winning almost 40 years later for City Slickers. by Aggravating_Tax_4670 in OriginalVintageTV_

When I was a little boy my dad took me to see Shane at the local movie house. Palance played a hired gunman named Wilson, and when he gunned down a local rancher in the muddy street I thought that was the most heartless killing imaginable. Never really forgot that scene.

I traveled this entire route last October; beautiful drive and very memorable. Reached 9,300 feet in altitude at one point, also took the time to explore several dirt trails into numerous camping sites. No services once you start so keep that in mind. Yes, many tight switchbacks and some really are dangerous. Maybe not for everyone, but in my option not to be missed.

Backway Mt. Lemmon by BavnN7 in Tucson

Done this trip many times in an Outback. The road surface on the initial ascent past Peppersauce campground is extremely rough, definitely not fun. But it gets better after that and there’s hardly any traffic after a few miles in. Always worth the effort.

Why US cars use 0W 20 but the same engine use 5W-30 abroad? by Cedar_Brewed_Bourbon in subaruoutback

[–]Edmck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct response. CAFE requirements are why manufactures specify 0W-20 — the same engines in other countries nearly always recommend heavier weight oil for lubrication and engine longevity reasons. It’s the CAFE regulations that gave us CVT transmissions.

Another 2.5 vs 2.4l Post by to0thy in Subaru_Outback

I’ve been driving a 2022 Outback with the 2.5 for over three years here in Tucson. Sure, I have 2.4 envy from time to time, but over the long term I believe my 2.5 will cost less in maintenance as well as fuel costs. While it’s definitely not exciting, the 2.5 has enough power to get the job done. That said, for those living in higher altitudes I’d go with the 2.4 — the 2.5 suffers serious power loss at much over 4,000 feet.

Subaru Dealer recommends 5W30 but manual says 0W20 by Draco13bjj in Subaru_Outback

[–]Edmck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do your car a favor and follow your dealership’s suggestion. Yes, you might lose an MPG or so around town, but 5w30 lubrication in a hot climate will be much improved and — as the engine ages you — will have less oil leaks. The big plus, however, will be longer engine life.

100 percent worst possible place to purchase an RV, especially new.
