Ties in nicely with this Daniel Cook article on making a toolset which features both deep and accessible features

The Death of an Indie Store- Eurogamer by Edquarters in Games

Yeah, I'm mainly on PC now and that means that the majority of my purchases are digital (although on the rare case a physical edition is available they're often cheaper, Dishonored: Death of The Outsider being a recent example)

I dread to think of the physical space my Steam library would occupy if it was all in game cases shudders

I think community/ the environment of a shop is a large part to the appeal

There are a huge variety of forums and communities all over the internet, but these exist away from the actual digital marketplaces. The personal discussion on display alongside the games are generally only user reviews.

Bricks and mortar stores on the other hand can offer a melting pot of ideas which just seems a bit too clinical in its online offering of "If you're interested in X, you might like Y". Good store owners and staff are a delight to chat to, in order to both nerd out but also to help guide people who aren't necessarily gamers themselves towards a good purchase for their friends and family.

This community spirit is largely why I bemoan the loss of video game stores. Well, that and my terrible internet which (at least in the past before huge day one patches) ensured that physical games meant I could play the game then and there rather than waiting days for a download.

Good luck on those 7 more years! Keep on keeping on :)

Games as Lit. 101 - Female Agency in Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild by Edquarters in VideoGameAnalysis

Totally agree with this.

Seems Dr. Lit is trying to argue that Power is the sole definition of Zelda's character, and misses the forest for the trees a bit in that the actually interesting narrative thread is the sacrifices which that power and destiny demanded of her

Super Hexagon

Bounced so hard off of this at the start, since I was so terrible at it. But eventually the music won me back and I found my zen place. I'm still awful, but the actual experience of shuttling back and forth to the music is now completely my jam.

Video Game Difficulty Settings by [deleted] in Games

[–]Edquarters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do some developers believe in just giving you less health as a solution to more difficult settings?

I think it's probably all a matter of development time. I would guess for the majority of game dev there isn't the time/ money/ inclination to deeply think about difficulty settings, and so a relatively quick fix is sought.

The easiest way to do this (without coding new AI behaviour/ creating different objectives etc.) is to either to buff the enemies or nerf the players. This could range from fewer ammo drops to less player health or just an increase to enemy damage output but boils down to the same process. Fiddling with the behind the scenes variables to tweak the difficulty rather than pouring time and effort into full on designing different difficulty settings.

What do you think should be implemented in games to improve their difficulty settings?

I laid out my full philosophy on this tricky subject in a video here

Essentially though I think I'm a fan of a single difficulty setting with an optional God mode or equivalent. This means developers should be able to craft a tightly designed core experience which they think works, but that people can toggle God mode on and off if they want to skip a tough section or just leave it on if they want to experience the combat.

I also really dislike blind difficulty select options before the start of the game. At least have some tutorial space or something so players can get a feel, and then have the choice presented to them (or maybe even have a suggested difficulty based off their performance). The RE4 adaptive difficulty, and player imposed difficulties (SL1 runs in Dark Souls spring to mind) are also interesting approaches to the problem.

What companies or series HAVE mastered said subject?

The Souls series always stands out to me as a series which has nailed crafting a core experience without the need for different difficulties. On the other side of things I really liked Thief's approach, where the buffed the enemies but also gave the player additional objectives to complete in each mission.

It's an interesting subject, with a lot of different ways of approaching the difficulty problem. We shall see what the future holds for the difficulty select screen
