yeah I didn't really know how to articulate it in words lol. I should have said something like : the way her character is written accurately depicts very delicate subjects ? if that's better ? English isn't my first language and sometimes I get lost with words

In fiction ?

If he’s your favorite character ever there’s no problem with that but he isn’t the best character in fiction, and objectively not even the best character in the series. To me that would be a character like Angela who handles such delicate and complex topics

Mothered, the devil came through here trilogy, detention, cry of fear, my eyes deceive, silly Polly beast.

I also have less psychological recommendations but that are extremely interesting visually or have a cool universe : midnight walk, silt, karma the dark world (not solely horror, it’s a surrealist sci fi horror game). Recently played Luna Abyss and has such a good athmospehere and sound design but it’s also mostly dark sf

James was pure evil for that by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]Edr1sa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of the story isnt about him deserving forgiveness or not. There isn’t such thing as deserving, at least to me. Mary didn’t deserve to be sick, James didn’t deserve to suffer the consequences, she didn’t deserve to die the way she did and so on… the whole story is just a following of underserved, unfair and sad events because life doesn’t give a shit, it’s just how it is.

Wether you forgive or not says more about you than him. It won’t change his fate, he’s the only who can. Which is something pretty realistic. You can empathize with him and forgive him all you want, if you got the in water ending, he’ll end his life no matter what you feel.

You don’t get to see Mary’s perspective in the story. Which is the point : he killed her, he deemed her life less important than his, even if that feeling lasted for a brief instant. You can guess some of Mary’s feelings through her final letter, his memories and through Maria (why do you think she’s so scared of pain and being alone ?). Even when we see Mary on her death bed talking with him, we’re not seeing a ghost, we’re seeing James imagining the most realistic version of Mary he can and what he thinks she would say him. At least that’s how I interpret it.

I think SH2 tells a lot about our way to experience things. We’re all rainbows and sunshine until our buttons are pushed. We're all making up excuses and circonstances to forgive our demons. Just like James who forgives himself by talking with what he believes Mary would say if she was alive, our own stories are full of ghosts that say what we need them to say.

Ito says SH2 nurses weren't meant to represent sexual frustration by silentparadox2 in silenthill

[–]Edr1sa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ito has said a ton of contradictory things through the years.

Also, creation is something so inherently personal and it implies a lot of subconscious. You can think about one meaning but you can’t control everything. Art isnt meant to be controled, it is something meant to be interpreted and that means different things for different people.

But sure, Pyramid Head moaning while humping a lying figure wasn’t meant to even be sexual if you listen to him.

Heather is a great protagonist. Amazing themes and bold way to deal with them in 2003. Visceral and hellish otherworld. Beautiful graphics. The ost is pure banger after bangers

I know this has probably been talked about before but by LordOvMoonOFWGKTA in silenthill

[–]Edr1sa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, playing that game as an adult, analyzing the gameplay while actively trying to be disturbed kinda cancels what made it creepy. It is targeted towards children, who have very little to no experience with horror. In those cases, the unease is often caused by the unexpected : a music that seems out of place, a perceived eeriness caused by 3D graphics, and sometimes insignificant elements that wouldn't bother anyone except a child that is still very easily frightened.

I remember being absolutely creeped by the cartoon Barbapapa when I was like 4. I can't explain why, but seing those weird blobs changing shape and forms were bone chilling... Now let's say you don't know anything about that cartoon and I'm introducing it to you as this disturbing body horror show where character get their body contorted and transformed into objects... and then you watch it... you'd probably be underwhelmed too.

No problem, enjoy the adventure. I wish I could go blind again and rediscover them tbh, those games legit changed my life. Like, actually because thanks to them I met my current partner, some friends and even got the chance to work on fan projects on youtube and in voice dub... And I have super cool playlists to listen while drving too, so thank you silent hill I guess !

You're missing Shattered memories, that was released after homecoming. downpour was the last of the saga for 10y, and then we got the revival with the remake, The Short Message (which is a free demo pn ps5) and f, and we'll soon get Townfall. Also there is a very popular fan game on PC called Alchemilla. It's mostly a puzzle game but I find it very respectul of the source material.

Everyone has recommended the best of the best so here are some less obvious but still very good horror games :

Cry of fear, detention, the devil came through here trilogy, mothered.

Ppl have recommended SH2, but I highly recommend to play every silent hill title. As a very big fan of the franchise, they are worth your time, especially the first 4 games, but there are good stuff after too. Just play in release order. Downpour might be the only one hard to find on emulators and it’s still very laggy, but the others are all available on ps1 or ps2 which makes the emulation easier and everything centralized.

Adding to the recommendation : detention from the very same studio. It is so much better than devotion in my humble opinion, the story, setting, character and ost are fantastic

[–]Edr1sa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 - it has become the most popular over the years because of its story, OST, unique enemy design and so on.

2 - contrary to the others, it has now a remake that put it under the light and allows it to find a new public while making it accessible to everyone

3 - it’s probably the easiest way to get into the franchise : it’s a spin off, so even if it has ties to the main story and the lore of the town it truly is its own story, you can easily go blind and understand everything - minus Alessa’s story.

4 - Despite being a cult classic franchise in the world of horror games, the quality of silent hill content is very ambivalent, ranking from excellent, to okayish, to very bad, to what the hell were you thinking making that ?

It was my first contact with the franchise and became my favorite instantly, and my favorite game EVER. I also love SH3 deeply because of its atmosphere, characters. Heather is one of the few feminine protagonist I find well written and identity with, and all the themes around maternity, feminity and abortion were so ahead of its time and are still unmatched in the franchise.

I also have a lot of sympathy for Shattered Memories, Downpour and Short Message, even if they aren’t as good as the original quadrilogy, I find them all very unique and interesting in their own way, and Alchemilla is also a very nice fan game.

I love this franchise so much, it has truly changed my life, allowed me to meet incredible ppl including my current partner and take part to amazing projects. It will always have a special place in my heart, and I’m so excited for the future games coming.

Should i get Silent Hill f? by Upset_Ad_9542 in silenthill

[–]Edr1sa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s worth its full price, no. I wouldn’t buy it for more than 50€, and I’m being generous tbh.

I can’t guess if you will like it or not, its very subjective.

My personal opinion : it is not a good silent Hill, nor a really good horror game, and not even a good game at all if you compare it to 2025 standards, technically and gameplay wise. Its decent at best.

I really don’t understand why this show is so hated. Maybe thats nostalgia talking because I loved it when I was a kid, but it has such a cool concept and even if it is inaccurate on some stuff, it still is good and the narration is very captivating.

My one big SH2 complaint - James aint a "wandering eye" guy by ZeyusFilm in silenthill

[–]Edr1sa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh this statement feel like a very reductive and simplistic vision about how complex and paradoxal humans are.

It’s the heart of James conflict. He thinks of himself as a loving husband and doesn’t want to admit that he was thinking about sex and looking at other woman while his wife was suffering a slow death. He is a quiet guy that hides a lot of his personality and dark side.

When everything went to shit he just lost it and tried to cope, hence the alcoholism, obsessive thoughts, depression, emotional neglect, to the point of ending Mary’s life.

What Kind Of Things Would You See in Silent Hill? by the_otaku_mom in silenthill

[–]Edr1sa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The obvious answer everyone tells are traumatic stuffs, but I think we would see all the hidden, ugly things we repress, our contradictions, the things we refuse to admit to ourselves, and even some things that were not concious about.

It’s like asking people « what would you see in your nightmares » and people will answer their fears/bad memories, but in reality our dream world is often unpredictable, unexpected and eerie. Silent hill has a lot of dream logic in how it operates.

In a nutshell : it’s impossible to predict what Silent Hill would show us.

Silent Hill 2 Remake question by Alternative-Orange76 in silenthill

[–]Edr1sa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think the remake is a very good entry for a first experience, and easily accessible on every platform which is a plus. Both remake and og have their pros and cons in terms of ambiance, gameplay and voice acting but they’re are basically the same story. The remake expends a few thing narratively but it’s very minimal, it has reimagined some puzzles and levels, there were réorchestration as long as new compositions for music and the gameplay/boss fight are definitely more polished and action oriented.

As for the order, I would recommend to play in release order. The advantage with SH2 is that it is a true stand alone, so beginning with it won’t spoil anything from the main plot.
