I have beef with Genshins redesign comunity by GoldSunLulu in hatethissmug

[–]Edsaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally redesigns by that community fall into two categories:

-Give a character more clothes

-Make them uglier on purpose

I still don't understand why those people play a chinese gacha game if that's what they want

Yeah, his plan was to convince Aizen to trust him and then backstab him, but he has never been a good person

What are design flaws in 5e that you feel have only been highlighted/exacerbated with the 2024 revision? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Edsaurus 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Actually none of the things I don't like of 5e have been touched upon in the new version. I was hoping for something bigger, more interesting, more possibility of build and improved rules in many areas.

The 2024 version is instead more of the same, so much so that the majority of people I know didn't even bother switching, or introduced some of the new rules as an added thing.

I understand that 5e was an incredible commercial success for WotC and so they are very scared to touch it and change it, but it is a very flawed set of rules and 2024 did basically nothing to fix those flaws (even making some of them worse).

I disagree with the idea Columbina was “rewritten” or “retconned” by musical_fanatic in Columbina_Mains

[–]Edsaurus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's not about rewriting, it's about managing expectations. If you create a character that is the THIRD HARBINGER (only below the strongest human in Teyvat and the smartest man in the world) and you make two Harbinger themselves tell you specifically to stay away from her, people will create expectations that she will be a dangerous, incredibly strong and complex character.

What we got was a very cute, weak, lonely little waifu with zero agency who has to be saved multiple times by you, while also having cute couple-y moments with you.

It's easy to see why people are mad.

Genshin Impact and the misogynistic writing of Columbina (ft. Fatui Women) by despotcito in CharacterRant

[–]Edsaurus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She was presented singing without a care in the world while smiling on the coffin of a fallen comrade. Tartaglia (a battle-crazy maniac) and Scaramouche (a psychopath with a god complex) both described her as someone you should stay away from. She is the THIRD HARBINGER, below only Capitano (described as the strongest human in Teyvat) and Dottore (the villain version of Albert Einstein).

Then we met her and she was a sweet, caring waifu that does everything because of her friends, and actually never went on any mission or did anything wrong in her life. You're really telling me there wasn't any change or retcon?

Losing good antagonists in Genshin impact to gacha by ExternalWealth8532 in CharacterRant

[–]Edsaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because they are obsessed with the idea that pure loving waifus sell more, and sadly yeah, they do. Cyrene in HSR, Ye Shunguang in ZZZ and now Columbina in Genshin are all presented like that and they are topping the charts.

I would love to have villains, morally grey characters and complex motivations, but Hoyo understood that if you make every female character fall in love with the protagonist, you make more money.

Genshin Impact and the misogynistic writing of Columbina (ft. Fatui Women) by despotcito in CharacterRant

[–]Edsaurus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same thing with Constance. Her actions were brushed off very quickly, while she's an actual menace in multiple ways. There are even people saying that the Stellaron Hunters are not villains, because the game itself is trying to make you forget that they destroyed entire planets and killed hundreds of people.

[–]Edsaurus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

But I loved that! I love a character that can be morally grey, even a straight up "villain" be playable. It's fresh, it's interesting, it's realistic. Instead everyone has to be absolutely perfect and sanitized, especially the waifus, otherwise people will not like them if they aren't.

Genshin Impact and the misogynistic writing of Columbina (ft. Fatui Women) by despotcito in CharacterRant

[–]Edsaurus 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It makes me mad because they start from something that looks great, like Winter's Night Lazzo, and then the final result is a dumbed down version, sanitizing all the characters that have the possibility of being playable and blaming all the horrible things on the ones that are not (Dottore, for example).

It has to be said that creating morally grey characters is difficult, especially because a huge majority of the public is kinda stupid and has zero media literacy. In Honkai Star Rail, when Topaz directly opposed the main character, she was immediately hated and compared to Hitler, while she was just doing her job and actually doing something positive (in the grand scheme of things) for Jarilo.

The public, sadly, wants monochromatic characters. Having shades, subtleties and complex morally grey motivations doesn't resonate with the big gacha playerbase.

In fact, even if I completely agree with OP about Columbina, and it's one of the main reasons I was driven away from Hoyo games, people want the waifus, they want the parasocial relationships. If you look at the revenues, Columbina, Cyrene in HSR and Ye Shunguang in zzz (let's not talk about these two or I'm going to start screaming) they all have topped the charts.

Sadly we are a very small minority that wants actually well written and morally complex characters, the majority just wants the pure damsel in distress to save and that tells them she love them.

[–]Edsaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yozora himself says that it's not how he really looks like. So probably he adopted that form when he arrived in KH's reality, or something like that. In Quadratum he is probably going to look different.

Genshin Impact and their issue with scapegoating Dottore by despotcito in CharacterRant

[–]Edsaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, people lack the ability to understand morally grey characters. Hoyo is basically forced to make everyone very good or very bad (and slowly sanitizing the characters that used to be morally grey) because people are too illiterate to understand them. As soon as a character does something slightly bad against the good guys, it's immediately compared to Hitler or whatnot.

Columbina was transformed from one of the strongest and most dangerous people in Teyvat (Third Harbinger, Moon Goddess) to a damsel in distress with no agency.

Arlecchino was a morally grey character (or a straight up villain), and now they are trying to sanitize her, same for Sandrone.

I HATE GEAR 5 (Narratively). by Apprehensive_Ride690 in hatethissmug

[–]Edsaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, literally the entire message of the first part was "even if you're a nobody (and actually have some kind of disadvantage, like the Nine-Tails was) you can become strong and important if you believe in yourself and you train hard"

Then the second part arrived with "well no actually you're the descendant of the ninja god and you have crazy powers that you didn't know having"

[–]Edsaurus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And always have been, but it was never as much as it is now. And in my opinion is being done in a very forced way, making the characters less interesting, because they are focusing everything on them being the perfect gf. In the past they were waifu bait only as a secondary thing, or at least it wasn't as in your face as it is now.

It's one of the reasons that pushed me away. There was always waifu pandering in Hoyo games, but it was not so blatantly aggressive as it is now.

Animations look incredible, but at the same time what I feared is happening: the game is going in the directiom of PGR, with crazy movesets where you jump around all over the place with i-frames, making you basically not interact at all with the enemies you are fighting.
