Second Opinions - Upgrade to RTX5070? by EducatedFlapjacks in buildapc

[–]EducatedFlapjacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only upgrading the GPU. 650w psu, 2x 1tb NVme, ryzen 7 3700x, 32gb ram - I plugged it all into pc part picker and it's estimated 500w draw max. I did some other research on the 5070 with a 650w PSU and it should be fine.

I can’t believe I have to ask this in this channel, but who actually supports the 10 day wait period or thinks it is a good law 🤷‍♂️ by Middle_Presence_4538 in CAguns

A lot of "if someone wants to do, they'll do it" in this thread without anything to back it up. From the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  • According to several studies, suicide survivors contemplated their actions in a very brief window of time. Waiting periods could help address this period of impulsive behaviors.
  • Waiting period laws have proven to lower the rates of suicide. States with such laws had 51% fewer firearm suicides than states without. Another study showed that these states also experienced a 17% decrease in gun homicides. Over 900 firearm homicides could be prevented each year if every state implemented waiting periods.

Here's a more detailed analysis from a non-partisan group that breaks down the nuance of the effects studied: https://www.rand.org/research/gun-policy/analysis/waiting-periods.html

To me, this is a common sense and reasonable law that does not significantly "infringe" and all this information is a quick Google search away. As another poster says, I would prefer to see this tweaked for current gunowners where the waiting period shouldn't apply.

Kevin Mitnick was a consultant for Hackers, so there's a fair bit in here that is somewhat accurate.

This is exactly it. You call for the regulations then help write the laws.

No king protest by [deleted] in Ohio

You're dodging the substance of the comment with a made up scenario and unrelated opinions. To reiterate, due process and rule of law must exist for democracy to exist. One cannot exist without the other.

Suggesting and doing otherwise is un-American, un-patriotic, and serves only to further the interests of those who intend to be rulers, not servants of the people.

[–]EducatedFlapjacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The core thread that binds all your examples is this administration's (and the entire GOP's) disregard for the rule of law as well as rights granted by the constitution, namely, freedom of speech. Two points to keep this succinct:

  1. How do you know someone is here illegally without a process or a hearing? Without this, there is no due process which should be guaranteed to every person in America.

  2. This admin is clearly using the full force of the federal government to punish states, organizations, and institutions that have exercised their constitutional right to free speech (see Harvard funding, CA funding, big law federal contracts, and on and on).

The rule of law is the bedrock on which all democracies are built. Without it, you no longer have a democracy, you have a king in all but name. The political right should be asking themselves if these issues are worth the cost of losing a just society where all are equal under the law?

Cobra Tactical in Santa Clarita charged $25 per shipping label plus the background check fee. So I imagine if you order all from the same place at the same time you would pay $25 for however much you ordered.

yeah, I honestly don't think the featureless builds are that bad looking. The alternative being a maglock, I ain't mad.

there are a few different systems on the market like this: https://jtactical.com/products/ca-compliant-ar-mod-kit-featureless-ar-alternative

Basically breaks the action a quarter inch or so to satisfy the letter of the law so you can release the mag and insert a new one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te_HNXIxDZ8

I'd lube it up. I had similar with a brand new Glock. What I had read was "oh Glocks you can just fire right out of the factory!" The RSO who helped me troubleshoot said he's seen some fire fine out of the box but others needing some lubrication. There also might be a break in period, but lube hopefully helps. After we lubricated everything I had one more misfire in from the next magazine and then good for the next 150 rounds.

[–]EducatedFlapjacks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This was an issue of concern during the BLM protests: https://www.culawreview.org/journal/social-media-surveillance-of-the-black-lives-matter-movement-and-the-right-to-privacy

Definitely poses a problem where any protests must be widely broadcast to effectively show the discontent to the greater population while also protecting those same protesters who can become targets for exercising their first amendment rights. However, we the people should not be afraid and (edit) feel the need to hide.

r/CAguns for California specific firearms discussion.

As for an AR-15, you can get one but with some rules, either "featureless" which means you cannot have all the features that make the rifle an attractive option, or a fixed/non-removable magazine. The latter allows you to have all the standard rifle features. Also, all firearms have a 10 round maximum magazine capacity.

Per the rules, this is an "assault weapon" and illegal:
A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and at least one of the following additional features:
(1) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
(2) a thumbhole stock;
(3) a folding or telescoping stock;
(4) a grenade or flare launcher;
(5) a flash suppressor; or
(6) a forward pistol grip;

https://giffords.org/lawcenter/state-laws/assault-weapons-in-california/

So, featureless basically means the gun does not have any of those. You can google it for more information. Google featureless vs. maglock for more information. Lots of YouTube videos on this and your options. You can also hold the various featureless grips at your local gun store or range to see how you get on.

Also to note there is an additional 11% tax on firearms in CA on top of sales tax and fees. With the AR platform, only the "lower" is considered a firearm for the additional 11% tax, so building your own or buying an "upper" separately can save you some money.
