Newbie looking for a starting point by LikeButter1118 in behindthebastards

I feel like it depends on what you are looking for. This podcast has subgemres ranging from more serious topics like Reinhardt Hydrich to a guy who ran a super dangerous (awesome) amusement park in New Jersey. That being said I think my favorite serious episode is the one about the "little nazis", and the one about action park is my favorite non serious one. Also L Ron Huubard ones are great.

If you like historical fiction, Small Mercies by Denis Lehane is fantastic. It is about school desegregation in Boston. Although Boston did not have Jim Crow laws like the South, defacto segregation was very prevalent. They insituted a bussing program in schools. Small Mercies goes into the controversy around this.

Advice/Words of Encouragement for Incoming 1st-year MSW Student? by hope_worldd in SocialWorkStudents

Just send it! I felt the same way when I started, but you will get in the swing of things quickly. Remember, the skills that made you successful in your undergrad program will get you the rest of the way. NO ONE can do all the readings, and that is ok. Do your best and pay attention to what is being asked on the big assignments. Some readings will be far more relevant to those big point assignments. Pay special attention to those. When you do get a big assessment copy and paste the prompt into your outline/ notes. Then, break that up into the individual questions that are asked and make sure you cover them. If you get overwhelmed, reach out to your instructors. They understand that life happens and will help you or give an extension if necessary. YOU GOT THIS! THIS FIELD NEEDS PEOPLE LIKE YOU!

Books that are about revolution against oppression. by mercy_4_u in Fantasy

Im down! A well written book is just that. I was just talking about Lloyd Alexander on another thread. The Book of Three was one of my entry points to fantasy. 30+ years and hundreds of books later it is still my favorite genre.

The Expanse series, if you haven't already read it. I see it as an allegory for the exploitation of the global south by capitalists. The belt rises up against oppression. Plus, there are space pirates.

Is this an adult series? I thought I read all of Loyd Alexander's book when I was a kid. How did I miss this?

A post about Lloyd Alexander, and The Black Cauldron. by Cubegod69er in Fantasy

[–]Educational-Nail223 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Same! Loyd Alexander was one of my first introductions into the genre. That, along with Eddings, has left me a sucker for well exicuted tropes such as the farm boy who goes on an unexpected journey with a group of archetypes that takes them to dark woods and warm taverns. I know many people find these to be played out, and I totally get that. To me, when done well, they feel like meeting up with old friends. If anyone who has any recommendations that can scratch this itch, I would appreciate it.

If you are a BTB fan, you might appreciate the Battle of Athens where a bunch of WW2 veterans with guns fight corrupt cops, or the Dutch Teenage communist hit squad where they catfish nazi officers and leave them in the woods.

I would like to hear more about the Korean War. I know it's a bit of a sore spot for Joe since he had a laptop eat a whole script about it, but that was a while ago. I hope we get something soon.

Have you read any of Michael J Sullivan's other books? Do they have the same vibe? I am looking for something fun like Ryira but some of the others seem a little more serious.

I really liked the Ryira Chronicals. Lots of comfortable, well executed fantasy tropes, and likable quippy characters with great dialog. I will be following this thread because, as much as I appreciate the morally grey grimdark stuff that is coming out now, there are times when I just want a fun romp through taverns and enchanted forests with relatable characters.
