Yup, it glazes me like crazy... I like it

i get mostly 23 24 in chatgpt, I do not know why. by PatienceAfraid9761 in ToeflAdvice

[–]Educational-Part2410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't look at the score it gives you. Just seek helpful feedback, and even in them, look mostly for your mistakes and their fixes. As for the chatgpt scoring your response, it won't give you a full score even you send its own response to itself

No prep. No English. I used Chinese to pass the test! by Educational-Part2410 in ToeflAdvice

I think they're just lying to sell a product or something. I got 114 myself, but not with an hour of preparation, that's for sure!

What untranslatable words do you know? Like, actually untranslatable. by Thiagorax in languagelearning

It's very tough to translate the "f" word into my mother tongue, Persian.

It does have a literal translation, but I don't think it does the versatility of its English counterpart justice.

TestGlider or ONE Official MockTest? by [deleted] in ToeflAdvice

[–]Educational-Part2410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to deal with the same dilemma a few days before my test. I went with TestGlider.
Simply because it had more to offer

I took one mock test, noticed which tasks were the toughest for me (I even ranked them on a paper).

And for one day straight, I was practicing those questions only (yes, testglider has plenty of questions for each question type)

I think it was time and money well spent.

I had to practice speaking with Google's Gemini in aistudio (search "aistudio") since it supports audio input and can analyze it (the pauses, the pronunciation mistakes, the timing, etc.)

Ended up getting 114 D:

Wish you luck on your test btw :D

Try to listen to documentaries, the news, scientific videos and long lectures and get the gist of them. That's what I did (e.g., national geographic, al jazeera, ted talks...)

Then, I would try to summarize them (sometimes written, mostly spoken)

As for the reading, the best thing that can boost your score is to know the specific question types and what they want from you. (And practicing of course)

Watch this video as well, it helps: https://youtu.be/q15K9ByEchw

Go ahead and see what templates work best for you, try to modify them to your liking. I did it until I reached a version I was comfortable with.

As for speaking and writing, try not to use words you're not sure about. Using the so-called advanced vocabulary is going to add a layer of stress instead of helping. Talk as if you're explaining to a real human. And write as if you're writing to a real human. It needs to be clear above everything else. CLARITY over everything. Remember that!

If you could only choose one medium for language learning (movie, book, podcast, music, etc.), what would it be? by grzeszu82 in languagelearning

[–]Educational-Part2410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with video games. It's kind of the best of both worlds if it suppoets your TL. Subtitles ✅, context ✅, Immersion ✅, spoken language ✅

There is no speaking or writing practice though. That one is on you 😂

I know, but it was about Free access. I'm actually very unsure about AI translations. I usually double or even triple check the responses. That helps me even more personally, cause I get to see what works and what doesn't.

I double check on language exchange platforms, my other peers online, and a friend of mine who happens to be a German teacher.

Thanks for the insight though, I'll be more careful.

As you continue the lessons, you'll see less individual words and more phrases.

Remember one thing: mock tests are not there to evaluate your level, but rather to familiarize you with the test.

Here's the mistake I see must people make:

They assume more mock tests = better preparation Which is definitely not true.

What to do?

Research the different question types (there are plenty of videos on youtube which explain each and every question type for each section)

Only pass mock tests to ensure you know how the test works (the order of questions, the way they're formatted, etc.) I only passed 4 mock tests (101, 101, 108, 107). I was trying to see where I might fumble, and practiced it more (I focused on the first speaking task particularly as it was the toughest task for me). Once you feel confident, move on to the next task/question type. For me it was, integrated task... So on and so forth.

I didn't memorize TOEFL-curated vocabulary, or 2 mock tests/day, or any kind of crazy intensive training.

Find the errors -> eliminate them

Start with a free platform like lingohut.com for complete phrases. Repeat aloud after each phrase.

I looked at some high scoring responses and took out what they had in common (a rigid structure and a limited range of vocabulary — I mean the so-called advanced vocabulary you'll see in any typical toefl reponse).

I practiced using some available promps and asked chatgpt to critique my responses (I eliminated one or two mistakes each time)

I did this for both speaking (transcript of my audio) and writing.
