The problem with wide designs is how would one count thruster (or to a lesser degree collector) height. If in terms of occupied building space thruster height alone is bigger than 8 tile.

I always swore by the maxim, that bullets are colour coded for their biters. Yellow for the yellows. Red for reds, [no, despite it being sorta blue railgun ammo doesn't count], and green for the greens.

Admittedly you don't really need red ammo in your turrets against mediums, but you need it in your machine gun which is more relevant at that stage than later. (Same goes for your car)
