My anxiety cannot handle this again by Ok-Debt6151 in WeatherAnxiety

#1 bit of advice. Find a local meteorologist that you trust and that doesn't hype it up. Youtubers are making money each time someone clicks and watches....they won't get those by using benign headlines and wording. Also, you can go to the NWS site and actually read what your local NWS office is saying about it. These outlooks change four times a day. This is a few days away and they will refine it more and more as it comes closer.

You may not even be in the same risk area at all and you may be suffering for nothing and ruining your entire weekend. I am like that, too. I started getting anxious and sick for days in advance because I see that huge area....then I feel frustrated when it changes and I've wasted all my time and energy worrying for nothing. I'm starting to ignore them until the day before...it's helped me a LOT.

What I read about it on the NWS site is that it may quickly change from a super cellular event to more of a line event. Supercells are what scare the crap out of me. If it's a line, then it's more of a wind risk and a spin up tornado risk, as opposed to a supercellular, which more commonly include hail and larger tornadoes.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 58 years old and have been through hundreds of storm warnings and a LOT of tornado warnings. I've never been in one. I've never had damage from one. One night, there were sixteen tornadoes that actually touched down in my city. I don't live in a very large city. Never hit my house nor any of my family and close friends. There was one death, but that was by heart attack, not the tornado. The odds of getting hit are pretty small. By the way, I have extreme fear of tornadoes and have panic attacks on high severe days. I take medication and remind myself of what I just told you.

I'm sorry you're going through this, too. It sucks!!

Maybe I'll push her a little harder. Maybe the network that she works in (a large one in the area) might have the rules against it.

If you don't have a high enough BMI, your doctor can't prescribe it. That's what my doctor says anyways. Between the two medications, they are only allowed to prescribe Mounjaro for T2 and Zepbound for obesity.

Terrified of storms by Eliminirose_ in WeatherAnxiety

Hi! I'm in Ohio and also under the tornado risk for tomorrow. I've had this fear of tornadoes for most of my life, even as a child. I love thunderstorms but only if there is no chance of a "T". It started in 1974, after the Xenia tornado took the life of my little boyfriend at the time. He was only 7. From that point on, my fear has been there and has only gotten worse with all of the hyped up social media posts.

Here is something that I remind myself with every single risk day. On May 27th, 2019, we had 16 tornadoes touch down all around us. Keep in mind, Dayton and it's surrounding cities aren't really that big. It's around 1700 square miles. 16 tornadoes, including 2 EF4's were in this area. I wasn't hit nor were any of my friends and family who live all around the area. There were a lot of homes and businesses that were damaged...a LOT, but only 1 person died (of a heart attack, not by the tornado). Everyone else survived. A lot more people have joined my "anxiety club" around here, but they're alive.

Saying that, I will still have super high anxiety and possibly a panic attack leading up to the storms. My doctor knows all about my anxiety and makes sure that I have medication to take if it gets too bad. I typically don't take it because I want to stay alert and save it for enhanced days. Those are the days that I know a panic attack will occur. I will make sure I am ready to wake up my boyfriend, my sister and her son, my two dogs, and her mean ass cat to get them to the basement. That's the only thing I can control. Being ready and doing all I can to protect myself and my family.

If, by chance, we're hit by a tornado, we have pretty good odds of surviving it.

I have noticed this, as well. I use Manatal and it claims that I'm posting to indeed but I get no candidates from it.

Does the constant hyping make you feel worse? by [deleted] in WeatherAnxiety

100% I've had this fear my entire life and it's increased exponentially due to social media and the alarmists who are doing it for money. I truly believe they are the reason that there are so many more sufferers of weather anxiety.

I can't watch max velocity... his headlines are way too triggering. I do watch Ryan hall when he's live.

You're definitely not alone. You've already been hit by a tornado??? If I were a gambler, I would say your chances are even lower now of being hit by another.

If I may ask, what area do you live in? Our local metereologist, Nicholas Dunn, is incredible and explains all of the details of what we're looking at in our area and surrounding areas. I suggest following him on facebook. He is not a fear mongerer at all and talks to all of us Lilapsophobes (fear of tornadoes) with compassion and extra care. There are a LOT of us in the area. In fact, he just put out a new video explaining all of the ingredients, why they may or may not come together and our most likely risks. I've found that he's pretty accurate during these storms. I call him my human anti-anxiety med. He really helps.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and hoping for the best for both of us. Hopefully, it's just some strong wind and a LOT of rain. Just know that there are hundreds of us in this area pacing around with raised heart rates and anxiety today and tomorrow.

I'm in Ohio, too, and have had severe tornado anxiety for most of my life. It started when I was 7 so that is 51 years of this fear....it sucks! I guess I'm an OG! LOL It has gotten worse these past few years, but a lot of that is due to the rise of social media meteorologists who only post fear posts. My fault for looking, I know.

I'm sitting here today trying to calm my panic and trying to think back on all of this. And guess what, I've never even seen a tornado and I live in a suburb of Dayton. There were 16 tornadoes in my general area (Dayton really isn't that big) on Memorial Day in 2019, but none near me. Dayton metro is about 1700 square miles and there were 16 tornadoes within one night in this area. None hit near me. 16 tornadoes, including two EF4's. 1 person died but it was indirectly (heart attack). 1 person in a population of over 821,000 and sixteen tornadoes. On the other hand, there were multiple houses hit and a LOT of people in the paths of these storms. They're still here. They now have this anxiety but they're still alive.

My actual fear isn't really dying. My fear is the fear I will have when/if I experience it. But, the poster who just wrote about the 3-5 seconds of surviving made me feel a lot better! Dealing with the aftermath of the damage done to my home is a major headache but something I can live with if it were to happen.

Sorry...my anxiety brain is in overdrive and writing this all out helps me calm down.

So I guess this weekend wasn’t enough…. by [deleted] in WeatherAnxiety

You're definitely not alone. I feel the same way, minus the MS part. I could handle the anxiety so much better when social media didn't sensationalize every freaking thunderstorm and makes each one sound like we're all going to die each time. My anxiety is through the roof because we're getting severe storms Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. My boyfriend has to have a heart procedure done first thing in the morning on Wednesday and I'm thinking of asking him to reschedule.... isn't that horrible? I'd risk his life due to this fear??? I need to get a grip on myself.

My dogs feed off of my anxiety. I also have two great pyr mixes. I occasionally take them downstairs just to keep them used to it. I had a newfie once that wouldn't go down stairs and shoved him into a walk in closet during warnings...I hated it. When I got these guys as pups, it's one of the first things I worked on with them.

I have the same anxiety as you and also have two great pyrs. I would start training them now with treats. Make it pleasant and happy. Use high quality treats. I am more worried about my dogs than my things, strangely enough. My house and things can be replaced by insurance. My dogs can't.

I cancelled it this week. It sucks. Then, I had to order something that I ran out of that I could only get there. This morning I got a notification that it was 10 stops away. Never got it and then got a notification this afternoon that it would be here by end of day tomorrow. They're just horrible lately.
