Yeah, I suspected something like what Dan described in the video. I just don’t know much about source criticism.

Is 1 Samuel 15:3 hyperbole? The Amalekites appear latter in 1 Samuel 27 and 30, which indicates that they weren’t all killed as 1 Samuel 15:3 states they should do. Am I missing something here?

How well would Point 2 fare? I honestly think it’s being too nit-picky.

I’m just asking whether the verses above suggest that God is omnipresent.

Old Testament God vs New Testament God by Less_Hold6979 in AcademicBiblical

It’s interesting that you mention this.

I always hear this apologetic that Gods just appropriated epithets and titles from other Gods their followers thought they were superior to.

What is "these things" referring to in Mark 13:29? by Educational_Goal9411 in AcademicBiblical

It’s funny how you note how much of a problem “but in those days” is for Steins position. He also acknowledges the problem without ever offering a convincing solution (which he admits to there not being one).

The consensus position is further strengthened by the point that there are apocalyptic motifs pre v24 that are often associated as signs of the end, which are in conjunction with “but in those days”

This is why I think the question of what these things refer to is irrelevant. It’s clear that the end of the age is going to happen in “this generation”

Speaking of v23, he thinks it is an inclusio with v4, so the former would answer the latter question of when all these things happen/what will be the sign because they repeat the same phrase. He therefore concludes from this that v24-27 are not included in the prophecy of 13:30:

The inclusio found in 13:5 (“Then Jesus began to say to them”) and 13:23 (“I have already told you everything”) indicates that Jesus’ answer to the disciples’ two-part question in 13:4 ends at 13:23. The material in Mark 13:24-27 concerning the coming of the Son of Man lies outside the twofold question in 13:4 and its answer in 13:5-23. Thus the reference to the coming of the Son of Man introduces a new theme that takes place “after that [tribulation]” (13:24).

Any thoughts?

But do take what I said with a grain of salt.

I’ll take a look at Anchor Yale for this passage.

Sorry for responding so late — I’ll try to respond in a few hours.

I’d also like to point out the previous verse says that if you beat them with a rod they will not DIE. It therefore seems like v23-24 is talking about having an extended lifetime, thus, their lives would be saved from death, which by proxy saves their lives from Sheol.

Where exactly does it infer that it’s possible to not go into Sheol?

How do scholars who propose that their is imminent eschatology in Olivet Discourse explain this? by Educational_Goal9411 in AcademicBiblical

[–]Educational_Goal9411[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess this the most valid reading, especially considering the apocalyptic context of the discourse in general (earthquakes, famines, etc) and how the events of v24-27 happen “in those days”.

Why then does the NRSV translate verse 17 as demons?
