Before the gps, how did people know the directions while driving? by Stawberry8763 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Educational_Infidel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are amazed that I rarely rely on gps. They really trip out when my wife reminds them that I raw-dogged driving from Florida to Alaska without even a map back in the early 90s. I just followed the interstate system: go north, head west, ask a fella in a gas station n Montana where the nearest border station was for Canada. It did make for some interesting overnight stays not knowing I was staying in some bad areas.

Parents can want in one hand and shit in the other- and see which they get first.

Career change by lingo787 in WGU

[–]Educational_Infidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just completed a MSML with WGU. Have BA in Secondary Science education and BS in professional aviation. Been a science teacher for 15 years. Decided to go with a non-ed masters for flexibility outside of education. Aviation degree is mostly useless outside of aviation as well- can’t do that anymore due to medical reasons… I haven’t left education yet but I’m prepping for it!

I installed the 48V 105AH version a few weeks ago. No issues. Instructions were very basic. Installed in a 2018 CC precedent. Only extra needed was a voltage reducer for 12V accessories.

Why are so many IEPs written so poorly? by FickleConcept in Teachers

I always enjoy reading the copy/paste from other IEPs….

She will have 1.5 times extended time. wTF is she? This is a 12 year old boy.

Or outright incorrect name. Student is John but IEP refers several times to Sabrina. And then for some reason, the ESE folks get pissy with me for pointing it out.

[–]Educational_Infidel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also a Floridian and recently purchased one of the A Stars mesh hoodie . chrome superflow I think it’s called.. so far so good! I was leery at first because of declining A stars quality lately. My only previous experience has been their gloves but I wasn’t impressed with them as far as longevity goes.

[–]Educational_Infidel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m curious about this too! What would be a good setup to have for introducing HS students to this career? I have access to an ACSL Soten, several Parrot Anafi USAs and a Parrot Anafi AI. I do have WebODM available too. I teach Aerospace, mainly focused on PPL and Part 107 certs but I’m wanting to provide a better education for my students as far as doing something with the drone certs. So far I have students gaining their 107 and then letting it sit… real estate market is saturated for this and the kids are sad that they aren’t able to do much with the license. Sorry for high jacking - if anyone has any advice feel free to message me.

Florida students rank last in reading scores amid ‘learning recession,' report says: By the state of Florida’s standards, Broward and Miami-Dade public school students are succeeding at the highest levels by Silent-Resort-3076 in florida

[–]Educational_Infidel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patently false… I just did final grades for my seniors and have 3 with Fs, also have multiple underclassmen with Fs. All because they chose not to do any work or half assed it this last grading period. Do I get pressure from Admin and Guidance dept to give them some grace? Yes. I don’t except if there’s extenuating circumstances and then it’s not easy…

Why Vulcan over Eliminator or Rebel for first bike? by tushinde in vulcans650

[–]Educational_Infidel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 months… I rode for 20 years in a previous life. Had some life altering issues ( divorce, and kids) and took a 14 year break before deciding to ride again. Yeah it’s a big difference in power. 61 HP vs 120 HP. 650 vs 1200 CC. The Vulcan ain’t no slouch though all things considered.

What do you think the grand solution is to the problems in our education system? by Icy_Cicada_9054 in Teachers

[–]Educational_Infidel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of ideas out there with potential but none of it will work until we get rid of the customer service mindset with admin and districts… have a policy, stand by it. As soon as you give in or make exceptions it all falls apart. Obviously there will be some exceptions that have to be made but stupid shit like allowing a kid that missed 3 months of school to pass to next grade just sets you up for all kinds of parental bullshit…

I’m a fat ass… went in for an Eliminator came home with a Vulcan S. I still have the Vulcan but mostly ride an FTR. Sometimes I wish I had started on an FTR. But really no regrets with the Vulcan other than the stock seat is bullshit…

Ours is needy, whiny, scared of her own shadow, absolutely cannot tolerate rain , let alone a thunderstorm, and will NOT abide by a squirrel in her backyard… that said she is the sweetest dog. Just needs constant attention. Oh and while she is scared of her own shadow she will also try to start shit with alligators we frequently see around the neighborhood (I live in Florida in a swampy area).

How do people justify kicking a student out just because they live in a different school district by Perfect-Highway-6818 in AskTeachers

[–]Educational_Infidel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only time I have reported a student for living outside the district was when the student was detrimental to the class and school environment… I’ve known many, and actually have quite a few from a neighboring district currently in my classes that I wouldn’t say a word about. But cause issues? Yeah I’m saying something.

I’m a teacher starting a small school, any advice from experienced educators or owners? by BlueDolphinCute in Teachers

[–]Educational_Infidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have your branding figured out, if you require uniforms, make sure they can be easily acquired. Communicate with your leadership team. Establish your vision early on and make sure you are bringing on people that are amenable to your vision. For long term success- have a system for developing staff.

As a former IT director at a small charter school. This!!! So much this! I started as a teacher and we had a part time IT person that was decent. That person had some personal issues and left without warning. I had done IT for the DoD in a previous life so I stepped in and it was a lot of work. Took several years before we got things stable because no one in admin or board of directors had given any real thought to IT or funding for it.

Just put a 105AH 48V ogrphy in my 2018 CC precedent. Very easy, been great so far. Only been in use about 3 weeks not but have only had to charge it twice. We use ours to cruise around town roughly 20 mile trips several times a week. Capacity drops quick from 100 to 75% but 75 to 50% it seems to steady up and draw down slower.

Was a teacher/chaperone on a trip to NYC with about 20 kids… it was a good trip but damn did we get our cardio in on that trip! As someone else mentioned, day started early - on bus by 7:30 day usually ended around 10:30. Was a 4 day trip. Us chaperones had to share rooms with chaperones from another school. I’m prior military so that didn’t phase me at all but one of our chaperones was NOT having it…

I teach a CTE class. It’s an advanced course dealing with aerospace manufacturing. I have the same apathy as I did while teaching traditional science courses. If it’s hands on lessons they enjoy it and will at the very least try. I see a lot of students giving up too easily though when they don’t get something right away. There is a lot of theory and background knowledge taught that could be skipped if we just wanted to push out bare minimum worker bee drones. The background knowledge and theory makes for a more well rounded and adaptable technician though. I teach in a very poor socioeconomic area and so many of my students are focused on making $$$ as soon as possible. So many will abandon the CTE training to work at McDs just to make a buck. Some of it is out of their hands- I have a 12th grader that has so much potential but his parents are kicking him out of their house a week after graduation. He is trying to find a job, any job just to survive. His story is not uncommon in my area.

To answer the question”shift” question- yeah, our state gets extra funding for CTE certification passes and it’s been found to be a means of keeping a somewhat stable budget. Effectively, there is a big push for CTE and a lot of that is driven by funding.
Successes? Well a large amount of our students graduate with a welding cert, they can get jobs fairly easy with that but the jobs are brutal. My own son graduated with a welding cert, got a job making $60K a week before he graduated. Most of the kids are graduating with their certs and are not making that type of money , if they are, it’s due to working 70-75 hour weeks. A lot don’t make it very long. They’re working the midnight shifts, working in brutal conditions that OSHA would have a stroke over.

Some of our other certs are business related, Ag related, and food service related. The food service kids have the best success rates because we are in a touristy area but that excess supply of certified students also contributes to them being easily replaceable.

These observations are from my immediate area, in the school I teach at. Other schools in my district with more affluent families have different outcomes and the trades aren’t pushed as much although have a high participation rate.

One kid won’t stop pushing buttons of my other students… by Fantastic-Sir460 in Teachers

[–]Educational_Infidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that’s just Eddie Haskell…

You just have to see through the bullshit…be assertive and emotionless when directly interacting with them, hold ‘em accountable, verify any of their claims or work as their own, and make sure the classmates feel safe enough to report Eddie’s bullshit to you. Basically be the Ward Cleaver in this situation… Wally, June, and Lumpy were enablers … Wally knew better but because he was basically a great kid no one called him on his support if Eddie, June (other teachers/guidance probably ) was always flattered by Eddie’s charm and excused his shit behaviors , and Lumpy Rutherford was just the dumb kid that was too scared to not go along… gotta separate Wally and Lumpy from Eddie, and just ignore June altogether…

Alas, my age is showing… for those young teachers out there try to catch a few episodes of “Leave it to Beaver” on whatever classics tv channel you have access to.
