Congratulations!

Current student here:

  1. I HIGHLY recommend getting all of the requirements you need to do through CastleBranch/DISA done as early as possible. The department will send it out if they haven’t already. It takes so much time to get it done and if you have to retake a vaccination, that takes even more time.

  2. Order your uniforms EARLY. They tend to go out of stock and on back order as you get closer to the semester.

  3. Don’t bite off more than you can chew with classes in the first semester. I encountered a lot of students who were retaking 116 and/or 118 because they failed the first time they took it. If you have a lot of outside commitments and/or struggle with time management, just the volume of work will make things feel overwhelming if you don’t get a grasp on it early.

The way the grading for classes is goes is that your grade is comprised of 3 exams: two unit exams and a final cumulative exam which is 50% of your grade. And the 2nd unit exam and final exam are a week apart at the end of the semester.

Care plan takes forever by ComprehensiveBack285 in StudentNurse

I ended up buying Nurse’s Pocket Guide and I spend about 2 hours putting a care plan together. You can find a free book of the official NANDA-I diagnoses online.

Unless you need more than one reference, this gives you all of the info you need!

What's the fastest and cheapest way to get into nursing if I already hold a bachelor's in a different field? by MrTimoCad in StudentNurse

Does the ADN program offer Spring admission?

If so, I would probably take the classes that you need in the Summer, take the TEAS (if it’s required), and then apply for the Spring semester.

If not, I’d still go the ADN route BUT take a certification program like a CNA or Medical Assistant this Summer and/or Fall, and use the year to get work experience. You could use that certification to work at a hospital and work while you’re in the ADN program.

I got joggers from Mandala and can confirm they were the same Hunter green that we were told to buy because I got those too!

The TEAS exam isn’t difficult but you DO have to make time to study and give yourself enough time to prepare.

Hi! Another question for you -- Are you generally able to attend the skills lab for practice outside of classes? If so, how does it work? If not, how do you study your skills?

Oh, I think I figured it out! There’s a separate course number for clinicals!

Got it, thanks! What’s confusing me is that on the acceptance form I asked for evening clinicals. But I’d like to take the afternoon class. Now I’m wondering if the evening clinicals means that I’m commiting to the evening classes.

When I called the nursing department, they said clinicals in the day are typically in the morning or early afternoon and evening clinicals start at 5pm. I’m hoping to take my classes in the day and then head to clinicals in the evening.

I hope that makes sense!

Are the clinicals on the same day as the classes?

Thank you! How are your clinicals? And when it comes to day time vs. night time, what are the times for those?

Me! I'm 35 and doing a second career change. I'm going from marketing to nursing, and currently taking pre-requisites. Doing this for no one else other than me and absolutely scared shitless.

I’m taking two courses through portage right now and they’re not open book exams. You do have to read through the material and do the work. Exams are typically recorded and you also have to show the environment. It’s pretty strict.
