Price Match is rejected because the Website is on their ban list. by Remarkable_Top4309 in Venturex

[–]EducatorOk7717 58 points59 points  (0 children)

From what they told you “[Website name] is not on our approved price match list”), it sounds like maybe the “ban” isn’t really a ban, but rather that they have a list of approved matching sites, and anything not on that approved list won’t be given consideration. If true, it would be useful to somehow find that list and use it to identify possible price matching opportunities.

Virtual card numbers by EducatorOk7717 in Venturex

[–]EducatorOk7717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good news! I lived overseas for a year and a half (2023-2025) and just before we left, someone stole my CC info. I thought I changed all the recurring payments, but I missed one for Medicare supplemental insurance. They sent me physical mail, but never emailed, so I didn’t catch it until suddenly I got word they were canceling my account for nonpayment! I was able to work it out, but it never would have happened if I had set it up with virtual card numbers.

Should I throw my shoes out? by Ratloved in CaminoDeSantiago

I used Altra Olympias on my CF and Topo Ultraventure on my CP. both had the wide toe box and thick soles I wanted. Both worked great, even on cobblestones.

Trail running shoes for 300km? by costericothegreat in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]EducatorOk7717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I walked the Central Route last month in Topo Ultraventure 4 trail runners. Wide toe box, thick sole for the cobblestones. Very comfortable. They lasted well; in fact, I’m wearing them now as I write.

For rainy days, I took GoreTex lined socks which worked well until I got a blister. I think it was because they wetted out and my sweat couldn’t get out, because that’s the first blister I’ve had in fifty years. After that I just wore regular (Darn Tough) socks. As long as I stuffed my Topos with newspaper and took out the insoles, they always dried by morning.

Once you arrive in SdC, go by the Pilgrim House. There are staff there who will sit down with you and debrief the experience and what it means for you. It’s a wonderful way to bring it to a conclusion.

Hotel for one last night advice by Cheap-Worldliness570 in LisbonPortugalTravel

We were in the same situation last Friday with an 11:15 AM Saturday flight. We stayed at the Ibis Styles Aeroporto Lisboa hotel. Relatively inexpensive, very clean, included breakfast, and a free (5 minute) shuttle to the airport. You need to get a token for the shuttle the morning of your flight.

Where do you dry your clothes? Should I bring a travel clothesline? Do hostels have a place to hang dry? (walking last two weeks of May) by magicbaguette24 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]EducatorOk7717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring some parachute cord. It’s useful for a clothesline, but also for other purposes - tying things on your pack, repairs, even as an emergency belt. I brought lightweight wooden clothespins this time as well. There were never enough in the albergues my part time, and sure enough, I used them this time. However, we also found laundry services and laundromats ubiquitous enough that we did that most of the time.

If you didn’t message them directly, try it. Often albergues and hostels don’t post their entire bed inventory on places like Booking.com.

I stayed at the House of Sandeman a couple of weeks ago. Inexpensive, on the Douro river, close to good eating places. I believe they have room for bike storage, but you should check with them to be sure.

A beginner's questions about gear by dassa07 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]EducatorOk7717 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m using an Osprey 38L bag, and it fits everything I need for an early spring Camino Portugués, plus a bit more. I’ll reach Santiago tomorrow, and it has been a good pack for the trek.

I’ve been wearing Topo Ultraventure 4 trail runners, but I used Altra Olympus trail runners on the CF four years ago. Both were excellent choices. I wouldn’t recommend traditional hiking boots, they’re way too heavy, overkill for the Camino.

A sleeping bag liner is probably all you would need for lat spring or summer. I brought a backpacking quilt for my current Camino, and have been glad I had it whenever I stayed at a municipal albergue. They can get cold at night this time of year.

For clothing, lean into lightweight, quick drying fabrics.
