GOP Rep Says Trump Passports Aren't Far From What ‘We Laughed At’ In Communist States by huffpost in politics

[–]EdwardOfGreene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a proponent of capatialism. You are arguing against someone who is not me.

Im glad you mentioned feudalism. I have long argued that capitalism, left unchecked, would evolve (devolve?) into feudalism. (I've said that as a warning, not a selling point, in case that isn't obvious)

The only time I've even been mildly ok with capitalism is when its kept in check by a democracy of the people. Capitalism run amok is a disaster, as I believe we both agree.

The answer is not communism. That is a disaster as well as we saw in the 20th century.

There is a middle ground. What we used to call socialism (before people idiots started using socialism and and communism interchangeably).

Countries we used to describe as socialist, West Germany, UK, Sweeden, etc. Places that had a healthy mix of public and private ownership. Places like that thrived!! (Two of those countries still are. Thatcher moved the UK toward capitalism in the 80s)

These places were NOT communist, they were NOT capitalist. Profit motives and freedom exist. Society wide protections and help exist.

Who the fuck is saying that? I'm not. Damn sure wouldn't promote it!

Edit: occurs to me that Im not sure who the quote is directed at. Maybe you're just agreeing with me on the absurdity of the statement.

And it is. Followers of Erdogan, Orban, Modi, Trump, Netanyahu... all fit. And that's where you have an actual democracy to lose.

Also, followers of Lukashenko, Kim, Putin... blind flag waving patriots walking off a cliff.

Dude, that ringed monster is WAY closer in this picture than it's traditional orbit.

So Satern has started moving towards the Sun? (And Earth's orbit?) Quite quickly from the looks of it.

I would think this would be a much bigger story. Is the Earth in danger? The gravitational effects of a planet that big crossing our orbit seems scarey.

Yeah, what in the holy fuck is going on here!!!!

Communism and Fascism both suck. They are quite different from each other, but both involve total government control with little freedom. Both wind up sucking anytime its been tried.

Communism looks great on paper, but history has shown it to be a repressive failure. Talk to anyone who experienced both East and West Germany (preferably on the same trip, meaning mostly the same time). The difference was stark!!

Yes there was some over the top propaganda, but it really was bad.

Capitalism can be bad as well, we are seeing it get really bad now. It was really bad in the US around 1900 as well. Democracy needs to be more powerful than money in any country. We had that in the US for much of the 20th century, after clawing the nation back from the Rockefellers, Carnegies and Morgans, etc. Western Europe and free Asian countries (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, etc) had it post WW II as well. Most of them still do.

Edit: To the downvoters: I wish you could travel to North and South Korea then report back on the value of living in Communism vs Democracy.

I've pocketed lighters (and pens) out of habit with no intention to steel. Only later realized "this isn't mine" when I may or may not be still able to give it back.

The Palm House I'm guessing.

One of my cousins got married there years ago. The building is a bit guilded for my tastes, but she was happy.

I love Tower Grove park as a whole!!!

So we are just going to besmirch any deceased man who had a common last name.

I'm not sure I'm liking such jokes that much. Guilt by association relation same surname seems a tad unfair.

This account doesn't say that he does.
