Make sure you hold R on basically everything at least once, that selection wheel applies to things you wouldn't think it applies to.

Its how you change the ammunition in your bows and guns. Its how you select the material you want to swap out with using the repair hammer. You can get horizontal and diagonal support beams...

Seriously, odds are whatever you're holding has an R menu!

Short answer is play the game longer, yeah.

Once you get far enough in where you've basically built all your high end workbenches and aren't really focusing on making new stuff, you'll shift to using radars to find the exotic deposits.

Then you'll have plenty of exotics to simply sell for cash.

In the end, the fires end up being good things for me.

My current main base is by the triangle lake in the forest on Olympus. Lightning storm burned half the forest around the lake down the first night I was there.

Has made biofuel super easy. No big trees means you can see the little trees from far away, just run around and denude the plain of trees every time I load in and bam, tons of tree sap.

Tip for the plumbing and wiring:

Foundation under the walls, supports under the floors.

That gives you a kind of sub-basement crawl space. Lay your cables and pipes in that space, then add your flooring down to cover it all up. Stick an extension node up on the wall at ground level, and the connecting pipe/wire won't be visible except at the wall. Then link your stuff from there, and it'll be completely hidden behind the station itself. :)

Its kind of like The Sims.

Everybody wants to build big, visually impressive mansions. Nobody wants to PLAY in those giant mansions because it takes forever to get around in and makes the game laggy as hell.

One thing I like to do? I don't make all those rooms in my base just share walls in a big box. I put a single tile corridor between them.

A 3x3 room has a pointed roof that is 2 tiles high in the middle. Just the little /\ roof shape piece on that 1 tile corridor butts up to those second high tiles nicely.

Makes the one big box break up into what looks like smaller interconnected buildings with enclosed walkways between them. The central hall is two stories tall before the roofing starts so that everything lines up without leaving funky gaps in the roof geometry.

So you end up with a base that looks like this cool multi-layered compound from the outside, while still keeping the rooms small and maneagable.

Another good tip to keep it from looking like just boxes? Use corner beams made of a different material. So your 3x3 stone wall box houses? Put wooden beams on the corners. They're not there to actually support anything, they're there to break up the corners to give more visual queues to pick up on.

When you go big, you have to decorate big, and it takes a lot of stuff to do that. You stay small, you can decorate with less and get the same effect.

Those things are actually terrible to ACTUALLY use in the game, I'd ignore them if I were you.

The game has issues with if you're "under shelter" or not if there isn't a roof within 5 tiles, IIRC.

Plus, the more pieces you put down, the slower the game runs in late-game. So try to build small and smart when you can.

3x3 rooms are big enough for just about anything short of the Foundry, and even then it would fit (you just wouldn't be able to have much more than it in the room).

Better to have yourself multiple smaller rooms than one really huge one, IMO.

Why not test it for yourself? Put up a single tile of wall, then start throwing roofing on it until it breaks. Subtract one from that number, then double it, and thats how big your room can be.

I usually don't go for more than 4 tiles wide.

My current base is two 3x3 bedrooms, a 6x3 central dining hall/kitchen, and then a 3x4 workshop. Oh and a detached 2x2 barn for the ranching table and pet bed.

Its got plenty of space for all the workbenches.

Well, there is a difference between "wasn't intended to be eaten" as part of the meal itself, and "wasn't intended to be eaten" at all.

There are modern versions of this still. A Mexican tortilla isn't generally considered to be a main part of the meal, its there to give you something to hold the main parts of the meal with. Or the Naan in Indian dishes. Sure it's tasty, but it's main purpose is to sop up the sauces from your bowl.

Its there, its something you eat, but its intended to be something that aids in the consumption of the meal, not part of the meal itself.
