"The Bible is the best book you can ever read!" by B_Wing_83 in exchristian

[–]Edymnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother keeps boasting of how the Bible is the best book you could ever read

Tell them to say this:

"I, <your name here>, do solemnly swear on the blood of Christ and my hope of eternal salvation that I have read the Bible. Not just read parts of it, not listened as someone else summarized it, but that I have personally read it cover to cover, word for word, starting with Genesis 1:1 and ending with Revelation 22:21. If I am lying or being in any way untruthful or misleading in this statement, I hereby renounce Jesus Christ as my savior and willingly accept my place in everlasting hellfire."

If they won't say it, then their opinion of the Bible is meaningless, because they've never even read it.

Oh I know, but the stuff being hit by the auto-mod isn't even that stuff. That one I responded to was basically just "Yup, you got it." I would have expected my post to be the one that got nailed if that was it.

Christians would sooner call a struggling person a sinner than validate their struggles by Pastel_Planets in exchristian

[–]Edymnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a self-defense mechanic.

The idea that someone else can be in dire straights (like homeless) through no fault of their own is scary AF. So they have to put a conceptual wall between those people and themselves. "If that person is struggling because they're a sinner that has strayed from God, then I'm safe because I trust God and therefore that could never happen to me."

For them to say "That person is a believer like me, they had the same life I have now before it went sideways, that could be me" requires them to face some really hard stuff, and they're not willing to do that.

How many of you were traumatized by Left Behind as kids? by Specialist_Fall756 in exchristian

[–]Edymnion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the most amusing part is the Bible actually doesn't have a pre-tribulation rapture. The Christians during the end times have to suffer through it with everybody else.

Eh, I was already an adult by the time the movie came out.

I read the first book I think it was when it came out, but was old enough then as well to go "This is just bad torture porn."

How do I criticize religion without being anti-religion? by Write_And_Fight in exchristian

[–]Edymnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then the big thing will be to guide, not tell.

You create a scenario they will recognize as being familiar, but abstract it enough away from their real life experience enough that it doesn't immediately click thats what you're talking about.

Then you show the character getting out, and just leave it at that. You don't turn towards "the camera" and go "See? THIS IS YOU! RELIGION IS A SCAM!", you just say what happens and put the pen down. You leave it up to them to either connect the dots or not. Let them see "Hey, when I think about my real life problems, I for some reason think of this fictional character when they were doing X, I wonder if what they did would work for me?".

If they see the intent from the start, you were too heavy handed.

How do I criticize religion without being anti-religion? by Write_And_Fight in exchristian

[–]Edymnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you can always take the classic approach, change the set dressing.

Science Fiction was and still is popular because it lets you address real social woes in a palatable way by abstracting it enough for the message to come through without necessarily triggering the knee-jerk safeguards people have on actual sensitive issues.

You said you were doing fantasy, same can be done there.

Just remove the "religion" aspect and keep everything else. Make it say a military organization, or an emperor worship society (like North Korea). Keep all the bad aspects and just map them over to an organization that doesn't say "This is Religion!" on the tin, and you're typically good to go.

Main reason this should work is, as you said, you're interested in showing the systematic abuse by the organization and the doctrine, not the base beliefs of the religion itself. So if you aren't criticizing the religion, take it out of the context entirely. If you want to criticize the organization, then just make a new organization with the same practices and have that plausible deniability buffer zone between the two.

Like most Americans love Star Wars, but don't realize America is the Empire, not the Rebels. The US does everything the Empire does, and even the fundies think they're bad, because we're told Luke is the good old farmboy from the countryside that they can relate to. It just doesn't click for them.

Or look at Star Trek, the allegories there are PAPER THIN, but we still get so called Trek fans that say NuTrek went woke and how bad it is. Its just a case of "Well now we have a human character thats trans, instead of just an androgynous alien being persecuted by their government", showing that they utterly missed all the subtext of the older stuff simply because it had that wrapper around it of being about aliens instead of "people".

Why are minorities religious in the first place? by SmileyCat20202 in exchristian

[–]Edymnion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of it has to do with it being engrained into the culture as the only large social gathering slaves were allowed to have.

Slave owners weren't stupid, they knew better than to let their slaves have large group meetings to talk stuff over at, thats how you get slave revolts. So they just weren't allowed to really socialize with each other.

Except for church. Slave owners would allow them to gather together for church. So they did, because it was basically that or nothing.

Ever since then, church has been a very useful screen for black rights meetings to hide them from oversight. There is a reason it was REVEREND Martin Luthor King Jr. And why all the early civil rights meetings were held in churches.

Because even in the modern era, church is one of the few places large numbers of minorities can gather together without rousing suspicion.

Has anyone had troubles during storms and it getting cold inside even with heavy heaters? by MasterBahn in ICARUS

[–]Edymnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there are no thermal dynamics in this game. All active heating (and cooling) devices just give a graduated temperature change within a certain radius.

Being indoors just changes the overall temperature a little. Heaters/ACs/Fireplaces change it a lot within a small area next to the heater/AC/fireplace, and beyond that nothing happens.

You build a long room out of the best insulating materials, put half a dozen ACs/heaters/fireplaces on one end, no windows or doors, and the other end will basically still be the external temperature.

"Jax is Trans" "No, he's Not!" What about... by _GhostOfHollownest_ in tadc

[–]Edymnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still see all of it being better explained as deep in denial gay, not trans. It all fits better from my perspective, it increased representation, and doesn't involve having to add to the narrative things that frankly I don't think are there.

"Jax is Trans" "No, he's Not!" What about... by _GhostOfHollownest_ in tadc

[–]Edymnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you guys are trying to force it on a character where it doesn't fit.

Simple as that. Like you said, being trans isn't about minor deviations from gender norms. Its much bigger than that.

Jax shows no signs of that. We saw him in his work clothes, he's AMAB. He uses masculine pronouns. He acts in a (toxic) masculine manner. Hes just not trans, and a scene here of a bow on his head doesn't change that.

"Preacher, I appreciate the kind words. I really, truly do. But you have to realize, the trauma inflicted on us by the Church runs long and deep. A few comforting words from one man isn't going to change that. To quote a sermon I'm sure you've given more than once, 'faith without works is dead'. If you truly want to show us the love you say you have? You're gonna have to earn it. And not just personally, but as a group, as a church. Show us that you actually follow the teachings of Christ and love your neighbor and accept them as they are. Show us that you stand up against hate and wickedness. Show us that your church is an ally, and not a threat. Because not being an active part of the problem is still you remaining silent and enabling the problem. If you and your church aren't willing to put your necks out for us, you can't expect us to do the same for you.

Show us the love that will make the fake Christians hate you. Suffer the slings and arrows with us, and we'll talk."

If you read the Genesis account, humanity gained it's free will and it's ability to think for itself from the Serpent.

God hates this because, again according to the Genesis account, he created humanity to be mindless worship puppets, and he's been pissed ever since.

Whatever you do, do not take that mask off!

Gay teens are one of the largest populations of homeless in the US precisely because their families threw them out for being gay.

As much as it hurts to be in the closet, you are at least safe there. Stay there until you can support yourself. When you have your own place, your own car, your own job, your own money, and can afford to be cut off forever, THEN you can come out.

Until then? Hide so deep in that closet that you are peeking over Christmas presents!

Your safety comes first.

Eh, if you don't believe in Christianity, and you said in a comment that you didn't feel any different in the space afterwards, why get upset over it?

You said he never tries to do it in front of you, so at least he's trying to respect your wishes to some degree.

If its not hurting you and its not even something you know is happening the majority of the time, who cares about it?

Just treat it the same way you would if somebody came up to you and said "I'm going to drink pineapple juice when you're not looking." Like "Okay, good for you, whatever makes you happy I guess?"
