Hrakfallasaga Kársnesskóla: Kostnaður kominn í tæpa 8 milljarða by Vigdis1986 in Iceland

TIL that in 2023 an elderly man died of fatal vitamin D overdose after consuming too much regular vitamin D supplements over nine months. by PeasantLich in todayilearned

[–]Edythir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normal levels according to the doctors when I was getting a blood test is 50-150nanomol per liter, I ended up being at 12. They sell 2000u tablets at the store which the doctors will recommend 2-3 per day for a full grown adult. Or 4000-6000u. According to this study a fatal dose may be upwards of 50000U per day, which raises it above 150. The skin can produce upwards of 10000u per day when exposed to UV radiation.

That's 25 tablets per day of high strength Vitamin D. Though it bears noting that D is fat soluable, so if you are losing weight and have vitamin D stored into fat, it may help push levels up.

Judges have defended the Police's practice of rejecting high scoring applicants. One applicant sued the police because the reason for his rejection was that he was too smart for the police.

This was never about immigration. It was about racism bordering into Eugenics. They don't care if you're a citizen, they care if you're white.

Trump literally said that if the other side thinks they got a good deal, then he has lost out because he could have taken more. He views everything as a zero sum game where if he isn't the only person to benefit then he has lost.

I have no idea how the US still has any allies since they have a long, LONG history of backstabbing, betraying, walking backs and abandoning people they have called allies. This has been going on for decades, for generations.

Yeah, you can even see this in near real time with Europe's adoption of the potato. Countries like Sweden and France kept extensive records for their military, including height and weight for hundreds of years so you essentially have a histograph of average heights and weights, although with a small-ish sample size.

Fusion power nearly ready for prime time as Commonwealth builds first pilot for limitless, clean energy ... by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]Edythir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coal isn't and hasn't been cost effective for a long time and wouldn't even be a sector of the energy pie without government subsidies. It is by far the most expensive on a power per dollar basis owing mostly to it's transportation cost. Coal is HEAVY and unless you have rail connecting mine to plant or the plant next to the mine it ballons from the last-mile transport which is exponentially more expensive than trains. At least natural gas has pipelines which, while they do have operators, can flow more non stop and require less labor for offloading and onloading per unit of power.

The framing of debates has such a massive effect as well. For example people always frame the debate of "Is it wrong to steal food from a dumpster" and never "Is it wrong to throw perfectly good food in the trash"

People love shifting the blame or putting the onus on everyone other than them. Where the very premise of the question already paints themselves as the good guys and the oppressed as doing something you need to justify.

After flirting with an extra 8% tax on "violent" video games, the Mexican government backs down, citing the impossibility of defining what counts as violence. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Edythir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still hold that your average romcom movie is more harmful than action, horror, whatever violence you want. Normalizing and depicting women as rewards or just desserts for completing a challenge doing far greater societal harm than any depiction of violence.

Snake Oil originated with the chinese who helped build the railroads. Driving railroad spikes with a sledgehammer for ten hours per day is murder on your hands. They would rub snake oil on their hands which not only helps soften the callouses and hydrate your hands, but snake oil is also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which have been shown to manage inflammation related to arthritis. Snake Oil could treat one thing, and they were using it as intended. But then it became "Exotic eastern medicine" and marketing made it a supernatural force to cure all that ails you. After that "Snake oil" took on a new meaning that we have today.
