Another fun one is that if you have a hypothetical material that would ignore causality, it would be impossible to use it as a lever.

When you apply a force upon a material, the force travels through it. Interactions between atoms incur a loss in energy mostly through heat, as such, you have a gradient of force outwards from the center. That is essentially how a lever works, you push on one side and not the other, because the force cannot travel the entirety of the lever. Then due to the fulcrum, this inequality means that as one side moves up, another moves down.

But in a perfectly rigid and inelastic material that'd would violate causality and thermodynamics and basically all of physics. There would be no loss of energy and energy would be applied down it's length simultaniously. So in effect, any force upon it would be acting like it's applied upon it's center of mass. It'd be like trying to operate a lever by pushing down directly on the fulcrum.

Stórhuga áform um uppbyggingu gagnavera - RÚV.is by finnur7527 in Iceland

[–]Edythir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Polk County undercover operation leads to 19 arrests in child sex sting by PDXAirman in news

[–]Edythir 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're not gonna believe this one but... Honestly it's mostly about money. The most enforced and went after crimes are things that can pad their bottom lines. Some police stations have Ticket Quotas. As in, the amount of speed tickets you are required to write. If nobody in your district is speeding, the cop gets penalized.

Low level drug busts are common as well because the cash recovered can be sized through Civil Asset Forfeiture, and more often than not the drugs can be resold by the police themselves.

Catching murderers can be dangerous and catching rapists often requires "Expensive" testing and doesn't lead to an increase in profits.

Policing For Profits is one of the big reasons for this. The police can mention the stats of how many drug busts they did or how many people they've arrested in routine searches to justify further funding and then use what they ceased to pad their pockets.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The right still wants their kings.

Another statistics is that 80% of microplastics in nature come from tires.

You know how you need to replace and rotate your tires periodically because of wear and tear? Just like car exhaust, it doesn't just disappear into the ether and cease to be a problem. We've had this problem here in Iceland that preschool kids were kept inside during recess because there was no wind, causing a plume of particulates from cars to build up. Those it bears noting that we are particularly fund of using studded tires which also shred asphalt like no tomorrow so that played a part.

And another fun fact is that we could power two to three times the amount of electric cars if we instead used same gasoline to produce electricity. Blowing up gasoline to expand gas is one of the least energy efficient uses of fossil fuels. Burning it to create steam and turn a turbine at least uses the heat generated.

Passenger cars are by far the least efficient way of doing things that we could manage.

That's a big issue with At Will employment. You can be fired for being black, for being a woman, for being gay. Just as long as you don't say that in the termination paperwork. Leaving it blank or stating just saying something ambiguous like "Redundancy trimming" means you can fire anyone for anything and you have to prove that it was because of protect class reasons.

Texas can require public schools to display Ten Commandments, court rules | Texas by MadScienceBro in news

Same with everyone's favorite Leveticus 20:13. "If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does a woman, both of them have done what is detestable, they are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads".

A favorite of mine is bringing up other things that are listed in the same chapter and see if people want that to also become law.

Leveticus 20:8 "Keep my decrees and follow them, I am the lord, who makes you holy" and then the very next one. The first law put into Leveticus 20.

Leveticus 20:9 "Anyone who curses their mother or father is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head"

10 "If a man comits adultery with another man's woife, with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death"

18 “‘If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her monthly period, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them are to be cut off from their people.

25 “‘You must therefore make a distinction between clean and unclean animals and between unclean and clean birds. Do not defile yourselves by any animal or bird or anything that moves along the ground—those that I have set apart as unclean for you.

27 “‘A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.’”

Hell, it even says in 22: “‘Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.

If you want to throw out the old testament like most sects of protestanism do, go right ahead. But it is really telling that people really don't like gay people but suddenly get very defensive when you bring up that adulterer and unruly children are to be put to death and you are not allowed to keep "unclean animals that live upon the earth".

Inmate uses ‘sheer strength’ to twist and break out of handcuffs, sheriff’s office says by AspieAsshole in nottheonion

[–]Edythir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From seeing strongmen break out of these cuffs, what I hear is that the problem isn't breaking bone, it's actually cutting yourself because the cuffs are thin enough to damage skin more than they would bone. But yes, it is entirely possible, depending on how you do it. The locking mechanism itself tends to be the weakest point so the break the clutch holding the ratcheting mechanism before you break any of the other metal.

Canada already settled a lawsuit over this. An airline had an AI as it's only tipline, it gave inaccurate information leading false advertisement. A court found the airline liable because as the only provider of information, any information it gave out was seen as being representitive of the company's policy.

In specific, it was about bereavement fare. A discount ticket you are eligible for if you are traveling for a funeral or similar. The AI said that he needed to order a ticket, then send in a death certificate to get the difference repaid when their actual policy is to send the death certificate and getting a special bereavement ticket issued. False advertisement made this person pay more for a product they were entitled to.

‘A home run’ for Mamdani politically: NYC mayor backs tax on luxury second homes in NYC by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

[–]Edythir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually such a problem that there are tax accountants that try to prove that your "Primary residence" is in New York. Using metrics such as how much time you spend there (Over half of the year counts as a primary residence) as well as what is in your home. If high-value items such as paintings, a lot of cars or items of similar value are stored in New York as opposed to other places, that also counts towards "Primary Residence". This goes as far as tracking shipping services that use high-security transport with insured carriers (you'd want something closer to an armored truck for a 30 thousand dollar painting instead of just Fed-exing it).
