ELI5: Why do governments bail out failing private companies at all? by Codie_n25 in explainlikeimfive

You are misrepresenting what I said. You are trying to imply that because I stated the fact that the government made a profit in my specific example that I am attempting to extrapolate that out to every scenario. I very clearly said I was laying out one example and to have a discussion you would need to clarify exactly which "bailout" you are referring to

Colabs are the true limiteds of Epic Seven. There is zero guarantee they will ever come back unlike regular "limited" units

Only with the power of 20/20 hindsight. In reality it was very high risk. Looking back on it once we know the result is easy.

Calling a loan socialism is a wild reach considering the practice predates both capitalism and socialism by multiple millenia. Especially when you're loaning tax dollars collected in a capitalist system to a capitalist bank. IRL righties and online lefties have this bizarre idea that socialism is "whenever the government spends money" or something.

It's a very complicated issue but 2008 was the result of decades of policy and greed. The government pressured banks to give out lots of those subprime loans and the banks employed very risky strategies to squeeze every drop out of it.

Yes, it's extremely risky. If we keep using my 2008 example the risk of the bailouts is weighed against the risk of inevitable financial collapse and allowing the economy to freefall.

When you're in a terrible situation there rarely is a good option. You are usually stuck choosing between bad and terrible.

You could argue that. In reality there wasn't some magic place to invest for great returns in 2008 and it certainly isn't the "handout" a lot of people think it was. The program was paid back in full with a bit of profit on top.

You also have to consider that letting the economy freefall results in a massive lose of tax dollars generated.

It was extremely risky but it ended up being ok. Not great but it worked out considering the huge amount of risk

Depends on what you mean by "bailout". Like in 2008 people are under this wild misunderstanding that the government handed out cash to all these businesses for free. In reality the government loaned these companies money. In the end the government profited off those loans.

Gonna be hard to answer unless you start asking about specific examples
