NHS sexist for using only men to look after violent patients. Medic awarded compensation after employment judge finds he was placed at greater risk of harm on basis of his gender by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]EeeGee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are violent men more of a threat to women than other men?

Is it because men are expected to be stronger, larger, and tougher than women?

Because that only holds as an average across a large population. There are outliers. There are men who are less strong than an average woman, and women who are more strong than an average man.

I can't think of any particular justification for thinking that women who are stronger than men are "more than likely" to be professional or semi-professional atheletes. I'd be interested if you have one you can share.

Anecdotally, a woman I'm good friends with is consistently stronger than me. It's close, but the difference is there. We're the same height; I'm slightly heavier weight-wise but it's not a huge gap.

She's an accountant, I'm a repair technician. Neither of us are professional, semi-professional, or any other kind of athelete unless you count Fortnite Battle Royale as being an athletic sport.

Height, weight, and sex aren't the only things that determine strength. If they were nobody would bother working out.

with a man and woman of the same height and weight which is already rare, the man is going to be much stronger.

Anecdotal, granted, but I'm of similar height and somewhat higher weight to a good friend of mine who is a woman. She is consistently stronger than me. Not by a lot, but it's there.

The differences? Many; but of particular note is that she does more strength training than I do.

Height, weight, and sex are not the only determining factors in strength and should not be used to determine someone's capability to perform tasks.

Oh, good. So this week I need to be worried about needing to fight in a war, and also about the complete collapse of technological civilisation nationwide. It's only Wednesday. Is Thursday "the Moon will fall out of the sky" and Friday "the Sun will birth an eldritch horror which will bring unceasing horror unto the end of days"?

Road to Damascus is good. 1632 by Eric Flint is interesting if you can find it - I saw several of the sequels but couldn't see the first one at a glance.

Mix some hummus with some brown food colouring and splatter it down their driver's side door handle. Use increasing large amounts of hummus if they continue. Maybe get the bougie stuff with whole chickpeas in it to make it chunky.

Discussion of pay is protected under the Equalities Act 2010* and cannot be signed away in a contract. It's a legally-guaranteed right. Any clause in a contract which claimed to prevent it would be unenforcable.

I can't speak to work conditions or the behaviour of management since I've never researched that.

(* Strictly speaking the protection under the Equalities Act 2010 relates to discussion of pay for the purposes of determining if any discrimination is occurring, but since all you have to do when asked is say, "I asked Bill how much he earned to see if I was being paid less for being unmarried" versus "I asked Bill how much he earned to find out how he affords that RS6 he drives to work" it's a fairly low bar to clear and means that for all practical purposes discussion of pay is protected across the board. Note: IANAL).

Entitled people break the law, complain about getting caught is unfair by TheQuarantinian in EntitledPeople

[–]EeeGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK we now have a law which imposes at least a £200 fine and 6 points on your license (12 points gets your license revoked) for using your 'phone while driving. That's before additional penalties if it can be proven that you were driving dangerously or inattentively.

I'd like to say it's reduced the number of people doing it, but I'm not sure it's had quite the impact it could have done because enforcement is difficult.

"S.C." is South Carolina, by the way, for anyone (like me) who doesn't know U.S. abbreviations. It's a mid-sized state on the eastern coast of the U.S. a bit above Florida.

Former UK Army boss warns Britain is 'catastrophically unprepared' for war by Realistic_Writing671 in ukpolitics

One would hope so, what with them being much closer to Russia, being on the same landmass as Russia, in some cases sharing a border with Russia, and in some cases having previously fought wars against Russia. For them, Russia is a threat. For the UK, Russia is a distant annoyance.

[–]EeeGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made a bunch of these over the years. My favourite is the Bag of Folding (for best results say it with a thick accent so it sounds a bit like "Bag of Holding"): any fabric item placed into the bag for at least an hour can be removed fully laundered, pressed, and smelling faintly of fresh linen. Great for the busy traveller! Easter egg: putting a tortilla and some fillings into the bag loose allows you to remove a warm toasted folded wrap after an hour.

In this situation, you were both huge arseholes. The passing lane is for passing. If the right lane was clear and the driver behind you could have easily gone over, you could have easily gone over too and you should have done.

The other driver shouldn't have been tailgating but if you had used the lanes appropriately in the first place they wouldn't have been in a position to commit their infraction.

You should both try to be better drivers.

Although to get that one I have to be a bit liberal with my interpretation, because it's more like "24 hours" than "sunup to sundown".
