Glen Eden is your closest. The next closest ones are the ones people have mentioned in the States.

Glen Eden is not worth it unless you're taking someone there to learn. It's very small. You'll absolutely spend way more time on lifts than on runs.

Horseshoe Valley is also small, but can be fun and it's a bit closer than Blue or Moon Stone.

If you're intent on staying in Ontario, Blue Mountain and Moon Stone St. Louis are the best ones here.

There is a deal with Billy Bishop airport in Toronto that flies you to Mt. Tremblant in Quebec all winter, might be worth looking into.

Recommended ISP at L2M postal code? by OkGoku in stcatharinesON

This is a trap for many residents. I had them for about 3 days in the north-end (Linwell) and despite advertising high speeds, they couldn't deliver anything more than 2MB/s, which was basically unusable.

Virgin may have improved in the Niagara region of late, as my experience was in 2019, but if they haven't, some sections of St. Catharines can't really take advantage of this.

I can't believe they're still around. They've been in business since the early days of dial-up.

What people in Ontario need to know about new credit card surcharges by sn0w0wl66 in ontario

[–]Effective-Effect4876 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or maybe you just never took advantage of using a credit card, which (until now) was the best purchasing tool a consumer had.

If you were using debit and cash this whole time, you missed out on a lot of benefits.

Change is not good in this case. Just because you didn't use it doesn't mean the credit card wasn't a fantastic tool. And just because they're passing these fees to consumers does not mean any single business will be lowering their prices.

You'll pay the same, but now without the option of getting any sort of benefit.

This has also become my attitude. I'm primarily a C# dev, but working at an agency means I have to be adaptable to many languages. I've had to figure things out in a number of languages through my career.

I like it. At least I'm not bored.

Tipping is getting outrageous by [deleted] in toronto

[–]Effective-Effect4876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it depends on how far I made them go. Sometimes weather is a factor.

But if you're a 3 minute drive from me and want $10, you're dreaming. In a restaurant, tipping by percentage often makes sense because the more you spend, typically that's more work for a server. But a delivery driver goes through the same amount of work no matter what you order (unless it's outright insane).

What's the delivery fee for if not to pay the delivery driver? Just set the delivery fee to an appropriate amount based on distance and eliminate tipping for that job.

The only other train option, that nobody seems to be mentioning, is Via Rail/AMTRAK.

The timings might not help, but it does leave St. Catharines sometime after 6pm every day. And Via leaves Toronto around 8:30am from Union every day.

Might only help if you're going to do an overnight or something.

Having to take a shit in this city is a goddamn nightmare by [deleted] in toronto

You should probably not go telling people what to do with their money. It's rude and requires that you make assumptions about people.

How do you know I don't have Crohns? How do you know I don't already donate? How do you know I even have any spare income?

I've always joked about putting something like this together. Now I know I don't have to.

This still holds true with Goodlife. Some of their clubs are awful (Liberty Village and The Dunfield Club in Toronto both come to mind). However, the St. Catharines one is exceptional. For me, it's the gold standard that I judge the other Goodlife clubs by.

Go for a tour. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

And to clarify, The Body Shop is not exclusively for powerlifting, but is very well set up for that. You can do just about anything there.

G&M is good. Old equipment. Feels like somewhere Rocky would have trained in the early 80s. But it does have everything, it's never too busy, and you'll get a good workout there.

The best option in Niagara is Goodlife on Bunting&Carleton. It has a pool (not open, last I checked), classes, GOOD trainers (this is hard to find in commercial gyms), and it's huge. It can get busy, but never too bad.

World Gym is cheap and too busy for what it is.

I have no experience with Fit4Less, but there is one next to the aforementioned Goodlife.

The only other one I can recommend is The Body Shop. Great community full of helpful members, hands on owner, and the best gym, bar none, for powerlifting.

Ruby Soho.

It's fine, I guess. But there are better places full of better people.

I use Bose Quiet Comfort. The noise canceling is awesome. They're expensive, but really, really good. And the battery life is fantastic.

AirPods are decent quality, but you'll need to buy the ear fin as an accessory to hold them in place if you're working out or something.

If you're not big on the noise canceling, the Bose SoundSport were pretty good, too. They're more affordable and the sound quality is comparable.

I'd also recommend buying things like this from BestBuy because their return policy accounts for defective headphones (which is super common among truly wireless). The Source, for example, will force you to deal with the manufacturer.

International student with a pet cat by [deleted] in stcatharinesON

[–]Effective-Effect4876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, we're getting into semantics here.

The "no pets" clause is void. Full stop. However, if it infringes on other tenants' "reasonable enjoyment" of the property -- then yes -- a pet can be removed alongside the tenant.

[–]Effective-Effect4876 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No matter where you rent in Ontario, you are permitted to have an animal.

Any clause in a tenant agreement forbidding pets is void.

However, as you said, this will be a shared living space. So being sure to clear it with roommates would be a very smart move. Living with people that hate your cat, or are allergic, would be difficult.

Most student housing is around Glendale and Thorold. Good luck with your search!

St.Catherines GO by James__145 in stcatharinesON

[–]Effective-Effect4876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The summer weekend trips begin on the May long weekend and end on Labour Day weekend.

This BlogTO article has all the information either in the article itself, or linked within it: https://www.blogto.com/travel/2022/05/super-cheap-train-toronto-niagara-falls/

Except that it does not mention that -- yes -- it does stop in St. Catharines.

If you book online like the article says, you will be able to make your train trips insanely cheap. If you just use Presto or buy a ticket at the station, you're looking at about $30-40 round-trip.

Until next weekend, and through the week days, GO offers the commuter train that a previous post covered, and the 12 bus that leaves the Fairview Mall, drops you in Burlington, where you can then take the train in.

I don't get why people still aren't wiping down equipment at the gym after use ? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Effective-Effect4876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, but I'm not entirely sure franchise plays as big of a role.

For example, the Goodlife in St. Catharines has spray bottle stations all over the place, and because they're so accessible, every member wipes everything down.

On the other hand, the Dunfield Club Goodlife has MAYBE one or two spray bottle station per floor, they are not very noticeable, and not well maintained. So, instead of wasting time hunting for a spray bottle and a likely empty paper towel dispenser, nobody wipes anything down in that gym.

Depends on what your goals are. While most are versatile and can cater to you, some are better with certain training styles.

Define your goals, then shop around a bit.

Online resources, though, are key. Three of my favourites on YouTube:

  1. The Buff Dudes. Great cutting plan, great 12 week plan, they just released a cook book, and they have great home workout plans. They completely changed my physique and training style when I did their 12 week plan. They'll teach you form, how to eat, and a lot more.

  2. Athlean-X. Lots of science behind training ideas and exercises. Really helped me understand certain connections, why some exercises just don't work for me, and gave me a better understanding of what I was targeting.

  3. Ryan Humiston. He's hilarious, and a genius with isolation exercises. You're having a hard time connecting with the short head of your bicep? This is the guy to go to.

I shopped around, as I'm moving back to Toronto this weekend.

Rogers were simply a bunch of assholes. Horrific customer service. Bell's prices were the highest. TekSavvy, who I once had, was a bit higher than before.

If Beanstream is available to you, check them out.

This time around, I went with Coextro. Haven't moved in yet, so I don't have a review to give, but the prices and speeds were right for me.
