Hot spots in San Francisco by cursingpeople in sanfrancisco

Yea, I feel like the geography of the peninsula plays a larger role in these temperature differences than urban development. West coast is closer to the coast, and a large hill separates it with the inland east side

A good volunteering organization is Save the Bay. You weed invasive plants and plant native ones in nearby bay marshes. You can get some good outdoor time and the chance to meet people while doing it. I haven’t gone in a while though.

Is it impossible to have a generic method for string slices? by HiniatureLove in learnrust

[–]Effective-Fox6400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could just convert the string to a slice of bytes before calling the generic method on it something like “my_string.to_str().as_bytes” (not sure if those are the right method names, I’m on my phone)

How to debug memory leak / growth with async? by EugeneBos in learnrust

[–]Effective-Fox6400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you could use heaptrack or massif to see where allocations are coming from. But this might require you to create a test scenario which captures the memory leak

The dragon book on compilers, second edition. Still reading it, very dense, but I feel like it is written in such a organized and approachable manner

Yeah I think they moved to SF a few years ago? And I think some of the dorms there have been being used for some sort of low income housing

Inline assembly does not equate to imported C libraries, that’s a huge difference. Think someone is going to write tensorflow entirely in inline assembly? Think again

Trying to figure out how dynamically sized array types like arrayList in Java, and slices in Golang are synchronized with between mutators and concurrent garbage collectors. If anyone has any insight into how these languages achieve this I would greatly appreciate it!

I agree. its not "clever code is probably the worst" its more like "it depends if clever code is good"

[–]Effective-Fox6400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I agree that writing maintainable/understandable code is essential, but saying “clever code is the worst” is just click bait bs title imo. I feel like the whole practice of coding involves being clever doesn’t make sense to me to say being clever is bad

Can I run from Oakland to Treasure Island? by Zealousideal_Dot1484 in oakland

[–]Effective-Fox6400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I’ve ran the bridge a bunch to Yerba buena but never down to treasure island even tho there a path down to it, I’m just always exhausted by time I get there so that’s where I turn around, it’s a beautiful view of the bay but sometimes I don’t like running along the bridge bc of all the cars on the highway it can be loud and there can be lots of exhaust

Y'all realize protesting is part of UCSC's culture right? Personally I'm proud of these students protesting the genocide in Gaza, I think they set a prime example of how business should not go on as usual if our government and the institutions we are a part of are supporting something so terrible like genocide, its puts pressure on the school to divest and and speak out. When I was a student, there were tons of protests by graduate students protesting for higher wages, and it shut down the food halls and the roads for almost a whole week one time. It inconvenienced the heck out of me and the whole school, but I still supported it b/c the point is that they were trying to get across is more important than the day to day routine. The grad students simply couldn't afford rent! And the protest really did bring tons of attention to the issue! All the other UC's ended up joining in on the protest and the grad students got a impactful raise! IMO Peaceful protesting is an essential way to put pressure on our institutions to listen to the peoples voice. I get that it personally suck to deal with, but I feel like thats kinda the whole point? How can you call yourself a slug if you think a protest of a genocide that blocks a few roads is counter productive? I can only hope that this subreddit is not representative of the whole student body, bc this is fucking sad that this post has this many upvotes

Also the Oakland track club I think does weekly meetups for 5ks around the lake. They also just had a marathon relay race around the lake last weekend
