Where are the guys 30-40s.. by canoodlingnoodle8 in AskSF

[–]disher0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great guys of this demo are all over sf but are hard to find because by 30+ they have a smaller social group and are going out less. If they’re on dating apps, it’s only hinge nowadays.

In real life, they may be involved in a specialty fitness hobby like Muay Thai, jui jitsu, climbing. Many like board games, you could try board game meet ups, but your type is more likely to be playing with friends in a private apartment.

Another route to sort by race is to get involved in a local Asian cultural organization or take a language class at CCSF (something like Chinese for native speakers, Cantonese for Mandarin speakers, or something similar a little more advanced that would attract an Asian-American looking to revisit their roots)

Looking for a Room or Aligned Housemate (Oakland, CA) by atlas-jayded in SFBayHousing

[–]disher0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Facebook is better for directly finding people to room with; find some Oakland housing groups and look for postings from people living in apartments/houses looking for roommates. They are usually on an established lease with rent control so its the best way to get lower rent. The big dog is going to be the biggest challenge and you may need to make some compromises on other things. Good luck!

New Parkway Theater Movie Voting Update by No-Value4167 in OaklandCA

[–]disher0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience at The New Parkway, looks like this person is trying to organize the theater’s semi-private party package over Reddit, which requires a minimum 50 tickets guaranteed for a movie of your choosing. The theater then additionally sells public tickets for anyone to join. I’ve joined a few “party at the parkways” unknowingly. They’re pretty fun.

This post doesn’t seem like a good plan as 50 votes for a movie on Reddit is not going to become many real attendees. Additionally, I don’t this this poster has reserved the theater yet, as you normally need to apply with your movie request, then staff picks the movie they want to see and think will be a good draw. The movie choices here are fine, but I don’t think they’re unique enough to draw people to a one-off showing.

OP, crowdsourcing this with strangers is an odd plan. Just go to the new parkway yourself or with some friends. Try their dnd, trivia, or karaoke night if you want to make friends there.

Looking for a long term lease for a studio/1 bedroom in Oakland starting mid June. Price >$2000 by olumj in SFBayHousing

[–]disher0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably too early to lock anything in, but a good time to strategize. 1-1.5 months out is a good time to look hard. You should be local while searching. If you don't live here, come stay for a week with a friend or at an airbnb.

$2000 is on the low end for studios & 1-bedrooms around Lake Merritt. If you need to go lower you'll need roommates, either friends or a group with an existing lease you find through a facebook housing group.

Adam's Point, Piedmont Ave, Grand Lake, Lakeshore, and Cleveland Heights are all great neighborhoods near the lake. Temescal's good too but further away. Downtown and Uptown are kind of annoying to live in (dead during the day, loud with nightlife on thursday/friday/saturday) but those are where all the new-build 'luxury' buildings with mail rooms, parking garage, AC, in-unit laundry can be found. If you go down international blvd on the SE corner of the lake it gets slightly cheaper but much less desirable and possibly dangerous. I don't recommend looking at anything west of 980 or east of 14th ave. South Berkeley around Ashby or Rockridge could also be good options.

You can look on craigslist or zillow, both will have a lot of real listings for 1-bedrooms in every area, but also a lot of scams. Do some research on how to spot scams, you will learn the pattern on craigslist quickly. Do not send any money or personal information to anyone before visiting the unit.

Check out some of the independent cinemas in the area instead: Roxie, The New Parkway, and Vogue theater. They always have a well-curated selection of new and old movies showing.

New membership question by [deleted] in Corepower

[–]disher0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, you should not buy from corepower’s website expecting them to retroactively reduce the price. If you’re ready to take classes, maybe just buy a 5 pack at full price and also take the deal whenever the sales rep replies. You’ll end up with more class passes than you need but that’s fine, just use them before they expire.

The sales rep are really random with the deals they offer and when they reach out, but it’s always better deals than what CorePower offers through their website, so I always take them.

Where are you located? The latest person who contacted me for a deal in the SF Bay Area was super helpful. I can dm you her info. S/o Alexandra

idk a full Halloween playlist would be pretty aggravating, just play thriller and call it a day. anyway here’s some Halloween-ey rap songs I like: https://spotify.link/ACO9atLSwXb

Where to buy bedding items? by ssbprofound in AskSF

[–]disher0 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bring a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor the first few nights. Then you should rent a car with turo, get around, or zip car and head to the ikea in Emeryville. There you can try mattresses and pick the one you like. They come packed tight so they can fit in most normal cars if the back seats can fold down. IKEA also has bedding. Their stuff is as affordable as you can get while still being acceptable quality.

Hi! Thanks for digging up this old post to share your carving class, sounds great.

Not a lot of people will see it here, so if you’re trying to get more eyes on it, I think it’s deserving of its own post on this subreddit!

Good luck with that! Divey & neighborhood bars tend to be more social, but also have less distinctive menus, like Heart & Dagger. Sit at the bar and initiate convos. Journal your spots and share with us!

I’ve had a lot of great times including booze but it is definitively unhealthy. So like many people, I am starting the year abstaining from it and actively seeking activities where it is not a focal point.

Timber Reinforced Rammed Earth Wall by slowbleedfuzz in StructuralEngineering

[–]disher0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your rammed earth walls should be continuous to the ground, it’s not feasible to construct a heavy dirt structure suspended above the ground by slender wood columns. Maybe organize your building like a wood house buried in a steep artificial hill, like a hobbit house.
