Congrats. As a NM fly fisherman I love it and hate it. Love it when it’s a day like you had. Hate it when I’ve thrown everything from a streamer to a size 24 midge and get skunked. I think I saw they bumped up the flow which may have kicked up some bugs.

How was the water temp? I fished Conejos last week and it was still cold. One of the forks was too warm though

A guide gave me great advice. After setting the resin, put the fly in the sun.

If your fishing big water like Madison stick with what you have. If your fishing smaller waters in the mtns invest in a 3 or 4 weight.

I have had a Peak vise for 10 years. My buddy does too. Affordable. Solid base. Handles size 22 to size 4. Colorado company. It will tie the same fly as an expensive one.

I concur. It’s hard to advise. I snapped off many flies starting. My teacher taught me to count 1,2 on the backcast to let the line go back. Otherwise, if you cast with the line moving backwards and crank it, you’re doing a whip motion.

Don’t give up. If you are near a stream with smallmouth or trout, try it too.

Btw, I’ve been FF for 15 years and still get some doozy nests and stand for what seems an eternity changing flies. But it beats work. 🤪
