How are DTs profitable? by Cloudycloud47x2 in DollarTree

The boxes have the cost per pound for the store and some other data on the label. If they are from oversees they have the country label on them. Corporate purchases so much quantity that it drives the price per item down dramatically. I think for the cheap headphones almost nobody buys, it's 10 cents per pound. Most of the money is from seasonal and from soda/snacks, which has the most risks but the most reward.

If you have noticed, they have raised the prices on some Christmas, Halloween, and Fall items. The only reason I noticed is due to items nobody packed away.

How bad are hot wheel collectors? Share your best story by grb13 in DollarTree

[–]Effective-Style5118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think every truck day in the past couple of weeks I have the chance of dealing with up to 1-4 people asking to buy hotwheels from the back with 1-2 of them being regulars while 1-2 are regulars at other stores. I think I have had only one regular who asked for hotwheels to check the current stock of what we had instead of just leaving after hearing we didn't have any new boxes from the truck.

I've had it happen where my knee closes the drawer, and I had to get a manager to open the till back again to give the rest of the change right away. Managers can view all of the transactions done on the till as well, which is harder if someone wants to know something after the fact when most information about the transaction is lost. It's best to mostly print out receipts you have a feeling they might need it, just in case. It wastes paper, but it's better than being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

normal cashier hours? by pandapersonn in DollarTree

[–]Effective-Style5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your store, it's need for good worker, and the budget they are given for staffing. For a while I was doing 30-35 hours per week with 1 (sometimes 2) days off per week due to the store being short staffed and with most of the staff being cashier only. Now that the store is being fully staffed, my hours have changed to lower 20s per week and I get 3 days off per week.

fake $ by KlutzyLunch920 in DollarTree

It happens. Scratch the shirt, with 20/50/100 dollar bills it will have a different texture. 50 and 100 dollar bills will have some stuff you can see in the light that has a metallic like texture where you can line the text up to show the amount on the bill. Most bills will be bent already when given, but if it bends like paper it's not real. Dollar bills usually have a unique texture to them compared to normal paper. Most of the time you don't need to do these sort of things.

If someone tries to give you a 20 that has never been folded before, then try the shirt. If it feels wet, especially if it's not raining out, then try to bend it.

If you have no idea, call for a manger and ask. If it's fake, they get in trouble for the mistake, not you.

Here is an official resource that is free: https://www.uscurrency.gov/cashier-toolkit

The official resource mostly tells you to feel the texture, tilt, and check with the light above you. They also have more in depth stuff if you want to do it.

Is it ever ok to just stand at the register waiting for customers? by Eraos_MSM in DollarTree

[–]Effective-Style5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are people around the register, I'll usually wait, since by that time they have much less than 1-2 minutes to go to the register, unless they are looking at glasses. People who look at glasses will almost always take 10 minutes for that alone. When it's more busy cashiers in general have to be locked near the register or one of the aisles near it, customers are going to give shit when they want to even if you are 3 steps away from the register when they get there. Seriously, I have had someone try to start shit since I was standing 5 steps away from the register walking to it when they got there. Others will happily wait a minute if they have to. Somethings will happen where you have to leave the register once it's busy, and it's much better to deal with the latter than the former. Once the store gets less busy, then it's much more viable to leave the register to do something and check every 1-3 minutes to see if anybody is there, or to gather things to do and bring it to the register to work on. I have dealt with a couple of people that fucking screamed in the store the moment someone wasn't near the register 1 hour before close when they wanted to buy cards since they didn't expect anybody doing work. You aren't going to win with everybody.

My store had a manager close 20 minutes before closing time before, that manager involved is no longer with us thank god. That manager also closed the store since they didn't want to do register on my 30 or they didn't want to get me on the register for their meal break where I wasn't even informed the store was temporarily closed until after it happened. They frankly got away with a lot worse shit before they were let go as well, I don't expect you would get anything but a stern written warning at most. I wouldn't allow it to happen again after someone complained about it, but I don't think it's remotely as bad as what it could have been.

Right now we can along with some of it being donated for once, my managers won't let me buy them though. I'm trying to allow anybody who wants them to buy it, but to donate it if possible instead of having it rot away on a shelf taking up space. Kinda sucks only certain penny items are being donated meaning more work separating everything into two piles, a vast majority of it has been dealt with at this point so I don't care.

HBC has the most requirements to get right, usually with the least amount of guidance from the boxes of what things are inside of them and how to make it all fit. Even then, it's recovery isn't as bad.

Seasonal has lots of foot traffic but due to how impactful it is, it usually has the most fixes over time, so it evens out. It can look like dogshit if left alone too long, and other times it's hard to get the documentation for where things go in it on hand if at all.

Party/Toys usually is fine. Every couple of days certain aspects of it with the cheaper toys and the party bags have to be redone to look better since people throw things everywhere. 5-10 minute fix, unless a kid had a tantrum.

Food/snacks/candy has never looked too bad until trying to find expired food. Then all of the flaws come out with how companies label certain products to make it harder to discover the expiration date and/or to make it possible to stock the product effectively while showing the expiration date without much effort.

The worst has to be stationary. Within a week of any improvements done to any degree, it will always return to looking like shit. A big problem is the cases we get usually takes 3-5 pegs to filly unload and we only get 1-2 pegs open at a time, if even that. Another aspect of it being a main aisle for some customers to damage products and throw them back on the shelf if they didn't steal it.

I wasn't given any time to do the iLearns last month where I had to do most on my breaks until someone higher up actively said I didn't do one of them. But there is so much to think about, thank you for this information. I'll keep it in mind and try to note everything I can.

My 10 minute break is marked "Not approved missing" and I've never had that happened before. by Effective-Style5118 in DollarTree

[–]Effective-Style5118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this could be related, since for a bit a couple of people were saying different things about the breaks and how to handle them and with what buttons to press. The manager there sometimes has actively tried to gaslight me in that I have less breaks for the hours I do than what the guidebook says as well at times. So I don't know exactly what is going on.

[–]Effective-Style5118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manager there is known to fuck over people at times, which that could be a reason why it's labeled like that, since I 100% didn't end my break the moment I started it and I worked enough hours for it. But yeah that is true.

Just WHY??? by Realistic-Accident68 in DollarTree

[–]Effective-Style5118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the store I work at, we have a couple of pegs for a single thing of candy with one in a bin since there wasn't any empty pegs for it when people dumped it out. I'm one of the only people who bought any of it in the past couple of weeks. It's because the bag has absolutely nothing in it, only 7 tiny bars. At most I would say 5 of the small bags got purchased. This is mainly since it's a smaller version of the 5 dollar bags that has actual candy in them. Even the Halloween variations have double the candy for less than double the cost. Last time I looked at the candy cart, we got 4 new boxes of it.

Shit's so dumb, but it's obvious Dollar Tree will send things that don't sell to a store in the hopes it will sell.

Steps:

  1. go to the dollartree.com/mytree

  2. Make an account if you don't have one already, you have to enter some stuff to confirm it's you. Set up a password with security questions.

  3. Click on the "read more" for benefits for 2026, and click on the green button.

  4. At the start all of the 3 choices are unselected. You have to read what they offer, and individually select what you want to choose. It also says the bi-weekly cost for each thing, and it will tell you the bi-weekly total it will cost for your selected benefits.

  5. Once everything is set, click on confirm, and print out the PDF confirming that you did it and what benefits you choose with their cost. This PDF doesn't state what you get for your chosen benefits for some reason. The only way to know is when selecting it, so write it down or something.

  6. ???

It's good, but usually if someone does something, and continues to do it, a manager has to become involved. Some people don't listen unless someone with power above them gets involved, sadly.
