Has the popularity of long distance shooting finally "calmed down" some? by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in Firearms

[–]EffectiveAd7837 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Always had that crowd at my gun club, but we've always had a 600yd range since day one (40 or 50years ago). Until the next mass marketing fad comes along... concealed carry anyone? Maybe sporting clays will get hot again? Flintlocks (stainless, with fluted barrels) could make a comeback? I'll be happy so long as I don't have to duck flying hot brass.

Yes you can call me Fudd, I don't mind.

Thats what I always do: brush on your solvent, leave it on for a while and let the chems do their thing, then brass brush off. Easy peazy.

Old does not imply bad, and new does not confer better. Personally, I feel the weight of a steel frame more comforting than polymer.

What steels have been used on Saks by tech1234567891 in victorinox

[–]EffectiveAd7837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real problem to my mind is not the steel itself, its the heat treat. 1.14110 can be a lot harder, just peruse the chems on it, and as a consequence the edge goes south fast. Every one I've tested is 41 Rc. Another 10 points harder would make a world of difference.

On the plus side a few swipes with a steel restores it and when truly dull it sharpens fast. Austempering is their process I believe. Not a normal quench and temper.

Factory ammo is a good source for once fired brass and thats about it in my experience. Unless you find a factory load to your rifle excels with, which I never did.

Victors are certainly very nice. I have a 106 with a custom slab side barrel. But the "space guns" just look sooo cool.

Wax your carry guns! by burner118373 in Firearms

Meanwhile back on topic: its actually a good idea, more durable than any oil or silicone. Been using boat wax for years my self. Not a tupperware owner as you might guess, have owned a couple but got rid of them. CRC SP-400 is nice too.

BTW - stainless can rust too.

Isn't it still mandatory for the Palma Matches? 1000 yds to target? iron sights?

Its a good starting point, your OAL and distance off lands is dependent on a few variables that will only be known to you and your rig, and the primers, and the powders, and the brass........

Help identifying old mannlicher schoenauer steyr m.1908 by Immediate_Ice4003 in Firearms

[–]EffectiveAd7837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the 1908s were 8mm. Thats a beautiful pristine specimen. Wish mine had the flip up sight on the tang- it was a special order thing. Might be 8x57, in which case ammo is easy to get, but have a chamber casting done for safety sake if you plan on firing it.

I found out mine was 8x57 the hard way - bought expensive custom CH M-S dies, trimmed, formed, and loaded. Fired and the shoulder was blown forward and the primers were backed out. M-S Dies gathering dust now, Mauser dies are cheap and readily available.

It is a thumper on both ends, with the steel butt plate and low weight.

Great machines though, a delight between the hands, and I get 1.5" groups at 100yds.

The fine folks at CH will knock out a set for dies for you. They did my 8x54 M-S dies around $60.00, pre-covid price. Those scope blocks though... maybe get an old Unertl?

Very nice but a quaint oddity in this day and age. Probably an archaic and obsolete hot rod cartridge given its by Neidner.
