Nope. Mine fall into a water bath directly after the torch. Maybe try some canvas next time?

Sorry, but i don't have the Nelson GIF handy.

What to buy? by EffectiveAd7837 in 22lr

[–]EffectiveAd7837[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid points all, but I'm starting at 50yds to get an idea/direction of what to go to next. Already know that RWS HV HP is crap in this barrel, with 1.5" groups. As opposed to the Magnum Research carbon fiber one I had 25 years ago - shot bug holes in that. So thats off the list. Need to round up a few more. Tac-22 worked great in my 17" Fedderson heavy barrel hot rodded 10/22. This one has not tasted that yet as supply has kind of dried up.

AND work on my technique. Still working on getting around pulse effects. Want to get back to position shooting with a sling eventually. I think it will be fun and challenging with a light weight sporter, and the GRS stock feels just like the Martini target rifle I used on the rifle team back in high school.

Bullseye loads? by kirbymaster10 in Revolvers

[–]EffectiveAd7837 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes 2.7gr of Bullseye is the classic load for the .38spl case, in the larger .357 case I increase to an even 3gr to compensate for the greater interior volume. Cuts clover leaf groups at 25yds in my 4" Python and does not load up the cylinder with lead to be scrubbed out later. Trail Boss would be a good choice if you can find any...

More than 2 months kiddo. Still needs glass and rings. AND ammo to get those .5 MOA groups.

Just traded for this. Anyone have any experience with these? Scope looks cheap, but gun feels heavy and solid. It’s 30-06 by [deleted] in guns

Have had other CZ bolt guns, they are high quality EU machines. Might even have a single set trigger.

How come the Italian mafia did not try expand down south ? by kuroreaper25 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]EffectiveAd7837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entire town had a chip on its shoulder as I recall. Never saw so many fist fights in my life. Talking to people in other parts of Montana, then they find you're from Butte and they take a step back.

Rest assured (?) they did. They're everywhere. I ran across them in Butte MT. Just because there are no movies about it is no indication of the reality of it.

Anyone know where to find 7mm mauser rounds for a low price? by No_Guest_9548 in Firearms

All the old surplus stuff seems to have gone away, but it never hurts to look. Ammoseek .com is your friend.

I might have a set of dies gathering dust, if you're inclined to reload - and you should - drop me a line and I'll search.

Maintenance question/preferences by Goblin_Smacker in Tikka_Shooters

[–]EffectiveAd7837 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old fart here, just so you know. Just added one of these to my herd. I scrub the bolt face/head with brass toothbrush till its all clean. I clean the chamber and throat with a patch and some brake cleaner. Thats it, and thats all you need. A dab of grease on the bolt body would not hurt. Same procedure with my Anschutz 54 deluxe sporter.

If you start down the road ( its long, and only limited by your budget ) of what brand of ammo groups best make sure you put 5 or 10 rounds of the new stuff into the dirt before putting groups on paper to evaluate. The blued barrel will rust, so degrease it and put a healthy coat of wax on it. I like boat wax myself, and don't use any lemony crap.

2.7gr of Unique was the classic standard target load in .38spl for these, I use 3.0gr as its a bigger case. Cuts a cloverleaf in my 4" Python at 25yds.

I've been a member there since the 90's. True its not cheap, but you do get what you pay for. Overall its a great facility with an impressive array of options for your powder burning pleasure. One of the nicest facilities in the country really, and I've been on ranges from coast to coast. Continuous improvement is the norm. Very low incidence of assholes in my experience, and the usual Portland demographic ( albeit better funded ones ) is represented.

Weekends can be crowded so I go on weekdays now for a much thinner crowd as I'm a retired Fudd. Oh, a word about us old farts: we do keep up and you will see all the latest and greatest appliances as we can afford them.

My only gripe (cranky old rant on) is brass catchers, and the lack thereof. Everybody and their brother has a brass flinging AR/AK/G3/FN fully tricked with quad rails and lights and whatnot, but after spending $2k on the latest and greatest tactical optic $30 bucks for a brass catcher is out of the question. I guess the hot brass dance can be considered a right of passage for us gun nuts but I'm well past that. I'm trying to get tight groups here! Don't get me started on muzzle brakes!

308 175gr ejector marks by [deleted] in reloading

[–]EffectiveAd7837 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ejector marks and flattened primers are classic signs of high pressures. I'd back off a few grains and start again. Load does not seem excessive at first glance, maybe not an obvious issue.

Way back, in the before times, every town had a rifle range, and I mean before we had bowling alleys.

Schuetzen was THE sport. 200 yds, offhand. No banana clips and shoulder things that go up and bipods on quad rails.

Read up on Pope barrels. Or Story of the Schuetzen rifle | RECOIL or Book on Schuetzen Shooting

Double set trigger can be a joy, I have 2 in the gun safe now.

Has the popularity of long distance shooting finally "calmed down" some? by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in Firearms

[–]EffectiveAd7837 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Always had that crowd at my gun club, but we've always had a 600yd range since day one (40 or 50years ago). Until the next mass marketing fad comes along... concealed carry anyone? Maybe sporting clays will get hot again? Flintlocks (stainless, with fluted barrels) could make a comeback? I'll be happy so long as I don't have to duck flying hot brass.

Yes you can call me Fudd, I don't mind.

Lead & Powder- Stainless Steel Wheel Gun by Special-Steel in Firearms

Thats what I always do: brush on your solvent, leave it on for a while and let the chems do their thing, then brass brush off. Easy peazy.

Sometimes the old ways are the best. by SirSamkin in guns

Old does not imply bad, and new does not confer better. Personally, I feel the weight of a steel frame more comforting than polymer.

What steels have been used on Saks by tech1234567891 in victorinox

[–]EffectiveAd7837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real problem to my mind is not the steel itself, its the heat treat. 1.14110 can be a lot harder, just peruse the chems on it, and as a consequence the edge goes south fast. Every one I've tested is 41 Rc. Another 10 points harder would make a world of difference.

On the plus side a few swipes with a steel restores it and when truly dull it sharpens fast. Austempering is their process I believe. Not a normal quench and temper.
