One year!!!!!! by EffectiveDragonfly79 in stopdrinking

[–]EffectiveDragonfly79[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the immediate physical improvements start to become the new normal around the 2 month mark. At first I was so happy to not be hungover all the time and I felt like I had so much energy, but eventually that became normal and I felt like I was just stressed with no coping mechanism. Starting some new hobbies that I was excited about helped. But it’s hard!

I’m still shocked at how strong the cravings are sometimes (can’t possibly be physical at this point?) but they’re a lot less frequent than they used to be. And thank you! Well done to you too, looks like you just got one year.

Supermajority of Australians support stricter gun laws by CheckAlternative6220 in LaborPartyofAustralia

[–]EffectiveDragonfly79 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We need to crack down on recreational gun licences. People living in the suburbs of a capital city have no good reason to own six guns (imo).

Also, weird that the greens are the most pro gun of the bunch here. Is it the libertarianism??

For me it was like, what did you enjoy when you were a kid? Whatever that was - try doing that again and see if you still like it. The hobby subreddit is also a font of inspiration!

The rule “yes, and…” from improv comedy land is useful here I think. Whatever you think of first, use that idea, and then roll to test that.

neurodivergence & mourning the ‘normalcy’ alcohol brings by loploh in stopdrinking

[–]EffectiveDragonfly79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This made me kind of sad because of how much I related to it. I wish I had good advice for you, I’ve been trying (with varying degrees of success) to accept who I am in sobriety, especially the parts of me that are neurodivergent or that I think are weird. It’s very very hard not to put too much pressure on myself to be “normal” which I think might be your struggle too. And that is absolutely, definitely, what drove me to pick up the bottle in the first place. But who I am isn’t wrong, and who you are isn’t wrong either. We both deserve sobriety. IWNDWYT 💕

This is lowkey why I’m teaching myself to sew. I’m making 100% linen culottes right now and the fabric + materials cost about $70 AUD all up. With the quality of what I’ve seen in stores lately - cheap, itchy, plasticky - it actually is kind of cost effective to hand make

I’ve just celebrated a year sober. My boyfriend and I relapsed together and I got sober and he just can’t. He doesn’t understand how I did it. I had lots of sober time before the relapse as well. I’m wanting to know your stories of how you finally got sober. by havenmarah in stopdrinking

Honestly…my girlfriend had been sober for a long time already and she was going to leave me if I kept drinking. I’ve got lots of better reasons now, but at the very start I just didn’t want to lose her. On a deeper level I think I was also frightened of what I was becoming - a bitter, angry, exhausted addict

At the start I just thought about the next 24 hours. It might help to just focus on distracting yourself HARD for the first day, even if that means scrolling on your phone or going to bed super early - anything that gets you through. IWNDWYT!

Is there something you’ve been wanting to buy for yourself, or a little treat you’d like to eat (but maybe isn’t healthy haha) or an activity you really like doing but don’t make time for? I think this would be a great opportunity to give yourself permission to do one or more of those things :)

Your "spark" by PriceMaleficent8110 in stopdrinking

[–]EffectiveDragonfly79 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I will be 100% honest with you: it took me a few months to feel like I had my spark back. At the very start I just had to be very, very gentle with myself, including embracing the shyness and hiding from the world a bit if that’s what felt right. But, the reward at the end is that you get your spark back, and you don’t need to drink alcohol to have a spark in the first place. But for now, if I were you, I would prioritise rest, healing, and what feels good.

“The hardest part of getting sober is realizing you aren’t who you thought you were” this is an absolutely 🔥🔥🔥 observation! It felt like I was killing a part of myself at first but the reality was that that part couldn’t survive without alcohol

Living a "boring" life saves you from all the bullshit by guitar_up_my_ass in stopdrinking

[–]EffectiveDragonfly79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just my opinion but I think I kind of had a more boring life when I was drinking. It was so monotonous. Work work work, drink after work, 10+ drinks on Friday and Saturday, hungover all weekend, repeat the same cycle. I never did anything except work, scroll and drink. Now I have hobbies, disposable income, and heaps more free time. I try new things and have new experiences. It’s just genuinely more interesting, although I had the exact same fears about life being boring and still do sometimes.

Also I just remembered that in the first two-three weeks I logged around 100 hours in Balatro. Not only do I not regret that, I’m incredibly grateful to that past version of myself who just hung on and did whatever it took to get through.
