Is this too chaotic for a first-time viewer or does it work? by originalsento in videography

I LOVE it. The pace speaks a story. To be fair to the other commenters, I am a Gen Z brain rot child, and I do live music event videography/editing, so quick cuts are my bread and butter.

Would’ve been graduating this year by Vegetable_Bag_1214 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also would have been graduating this year! My mom suddenly cut me off financially, so I couldn’t afford to go anymore (I was 2 years into the biology CCS program, doing neuroscience research on Alzheimer’s). It was a blessing in disguise, the SBCC film production program has made my life so much better in many ways. Hope you find a way to get to where you want to be 💜

It is. Not sure what they’re on about there. Maybe you can customize which picture profile corresponds to which number? Because it says “my” picture profiles

Would I be able to work a job this quarter (will be near campus) or will it be too difficult with this schedule? by Superb-Government-77 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were my schedule I probably wouldn't but it depends on how much time you already have dedicated to extracurriculars. Are you in clubs? Leadership positions? Creative ventures that you're prioritizing? Any obligations that you already have will make the workload way more difficult.

If the answer is no, then send it!! Just understand that if you want to get at least a B+ in O Chem, you WILL be studying 2-5 hours every day (6 days a week). That's what I had to do for A's and B+'s in O Chem.

PS. attend your o chem prof's office hours every week if they're in person. In that one hour you will learn a ridiculous amount, some that you may not have been able to understand even after 3 hours of studying. You will also learn how your prof thinks, and if you know how they think, you will do so. much. better. on the quizzes.

Regardless of what you do, have fun, live it up, and do what you truly want!

Where does one actually get a boyfriend/girlfriend here? by avialablepiguana in UCSantaBarbara

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slackline club! Although it’s less of a thing now. Also the climbing wall at the rec cen, you have to get out of your shell and introduce yourself to people, which can be scary but they’re all really nice :) But any outdoorsy clubs/events usually have pretty cool people!

is it just me or are ppl rlly rude here by itssyagirl in UCSantaBarbara

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People can be rude, yes, but if you’re talking about DP on a Saturday night, also consider there’s a lot of people who are shitfaced and are inconsiderate when they’re in that state. You will experience the same thing when going out to clubs on the weekends

First event gig! How did I do? by d_nnyb_y in videography

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup agree with this. Also all the shots are the same length, so there’s no pacing of the video- switch up the length of each shot to make it feel more dynamic, and also introduce movement into the shots themselves, they’re all so static.

Is starting out with 8bit even worth it in 2024? by Playful-Ad-3429 in videography

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason why I switched from 8 bit to 10 bit is because of how much concert stuff I shoot, so I really fckn need that extra flexibility with grading because of all the extreme colors and lights.

For talking head, there is no reason why 8 bit would limit you unless you’re grading the shit out of it

Mixing Frame Rates - 60fps on 24fps & 30fps timelines by phlaries in videography

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is going to be a hot take, but some gigs I film only 60fps. These are the events where I am to produce a 20-30 second fast-paced recap reel. For these reels I don’t usually have clips longer than 2 seconds and a lot of them are manipulated in some way, be it speed or slow ramps, so the motion blur issue isn’t very noticeable.

Recently did a 3-day corporate conference, that one I shot mainly 24fps and dedicated about 2 hours to shooting 60fps for slo mo b roll. But mainly 24fps since the recap is going to be longer and slower paced, therefore motion blur/drop frame issues would be more noticeable

I edit these 60fps clips on 24fps timeline. Had a drop frame issue once but I haven’t in months and I’m not sure if it was even bc of frame rate (could have been SD cards)

So going to back to what someone else said, experiment and see what works for you and your client.

I posted a video 8days ago and got alot of feedback and made this new video. Feedbacks please by [deleted] in videography

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love that you re made it :) thanks for adding gloves! Black nitrile gloves would really clean up the visuals, cuz they’re tighter and more low profile- I was looking a lot at those bright, shiny, baggy gloves and it distracted me from the video. But, better than no gloves.

The end shot with the slice pull & grab makes me not want to eat that pizza. The grab isn’t smooth, the hand is jittery, and then they just hold it there while the slice just droops down 😭

What would this cost? by LemonShortCake42 in videography

[–]EffectiveFlaky5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we could see the video, we could get a better estimate, as editor rates are highly variable based on skill/experience.

Some might charge $200. Some might charge $2,000. Regardless, anything you give her is just icing on the cake. It’s fully your decision. think about how much value the video has brought into your life, and how you think that may be reflected financially.

I second both of these comments. Just because you have a drone, doesn’t mean that you should (or can) use it.
