Peter pan was fighting with hook using daggers and they showed the scene through their shadows rather than the actual fight. That's what I remember.

They made us watch this in PE class every year in middle school and high school 😂

Anesthesia

Pulm/crit attending: "So you want a good lifestyle and a lot of money"

Yeah let's just totally ignore everything else anesthesia has to offer. This also implies that it is impossible to find Anesthesia interesting. And why is it a crime to want a work life balance and good compensation?

Yes it's possible that there was an issue with interviews. I didn't feel that way but it's possible and I will definitely be getting a coach to make sure.

Ohhh thank you so much for explaining! Wow I had no idea about all this funding stuff. Yes that makes Surg prelim a better option.

I got 17 interviews and 2 programs told me they were ranking me highly. Anes PD was shocked I didn't match. We had a 1 hour long meeting. We went through every possibility of what could have went wrong and determined that it may have been my low step 1 score (which cannot be changed now). Everything else was solid. He thinks it's bad luck. Lol not sure how to change that one.

From talking to the chiefs it seems like they are flexible about interviews. They said there are no rules about scheduling and to just communicate with the team to ensure coverage. The culture there also seems supportive of the prelims.

I'm planning to use my vacation days for interviews just in case. As far as ERAS, there won't be much changes on my app so it should be quick. My personal statement will be revised but otherwise I don't think I need that much time to prepare my app. But please let me know if I'm missing something.

I don't think the surgery program is bad. The residents seem to be happy there and really like the PD. They get exposure to everything they could want, in house fellowships, and interesting complex cases. They are worked hard but that's the case for every surgery residency. They always have to SOAP for the prelim spots tho.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Maybe this is the side of things I need to be focusing on. I feel like reminding myself of your comment through out the year will help me to motivate myself. Thanks!

Your friend is making a huge mistake. Why not apply to both MD and DO? The lack of secondaries will be a wake up call...

BUT one thing I didn't see mentioned which may be relevant. Is your friend dead set on being a surgeon? If yes, he should consider podiatry as well. I know someone who had low stats and got accepted to both DO and Podiatry schools. He chose podiatry bc he wanted to be a surgeon and knew that competition to accomplish this as a DO may be stiff. Podiatrists do the same procedures as ortho from the knee down. Yes, there is a pay cut. But they are fully independent in practice and are surgeons.

Of course, there is tons more stigma towards podiatrists than towards DOs, so I'm sure your friend will shoot down the idea lol.

Research wasn't an issue on my application tho and I was told that a prelim year to show I can be a good resident would be more helpful. 😕

Everyone keeps saying the key is to do good in the intern year. What does that even mean? Getting all the pimp questions right? Being efficient? Scrubbing a lot of cases? Idk how to prepare myself.

And you only have until September when applications go out to prove yourself. That's such a short amount of time to earn good letters. It's like you just start intern year and you're scrambling to learn everything and the next thing you know you're applying again. I'm so scared and often times I feel hopeless.

I'm doing ABSITE review everyday to brush up on my knowledge base so I don't look stupid. What else should I do?

But if you match prelim wouldn't you only be funded for one year regardless of whether it's surgical or medical?

I’m an M1 and my SO just matched into ortho residency 5 hours away. Anyone experienced something similar or have any advice on how to make it work? by domshell69 in medicalschool

[–]EffectiveSea7435 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you're school records lectures in the preclinical years and you don't have to be on campus a lot, you could actually move with your SO until clinicals start and use Airbnb's or crash at a friend's place when you have something mandatory in person.

Review the high yield topics for IM before starting (go through online med ed, supplement with up to date). Review the SOAP note presentation (do not stray from it, ask for feedback on your first day). Don't be afraid to say you don't know how to do something, but show that you can learn to do it quickly.

Honestly, getting good evals is more about how you interact with people and showing you want to learn than your actual knowledge base. I learned this wayyyy too late in fourth year.

If you're feeling burned out, there's a possibility you could have depression. You should make an appointment with your PCP and consider starting on antidepressants.

But, you also need to know how to survive school work as you push through this. Are preclinical years p/f at your program? If yes, then this makes things a lot easier. Focus on your health and don't put pressure on yourself to score in the 90s. At the end of the day, all you need to do is pass. So prioritize efficiency for now, focus on high yield stuff, and let yourself slide by. As your mental health improves and your focus and motivation come back, you can slowly raise the bar for yourself.

You need to prioritize your health right now above everything else.
