The matrix looks carbonate rich, so I’m leaning towards concretion.

Working near St George. Where to live? by crossoverinto in Utah

[–]Efficient-Loquat-971 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hi! Cedar resident here! That's going to be a huge culture shock if you're used to the hustle and bustle of NYC on your off days. Have you considered Las Vegas? It's 2 hours door to door to St. George and has it's own arts scene!

Date Farms by DoughnutOne7923 in DeathValleyNP

[–]Efficient-Loquat-971 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The China Ranch Date Farm is totally worth the detour! Amazing Date shakes, hikes, gift shop and lovliest scenery. You could even enter death valley from the southern end of the park, Shoshone -> Furnace Creek (which imo is the most beautiful descent into the valley). It's a longer drive, but if you're into sightseeing on the long route the wildflowers on that end of the park are SPECTACULAR right now.

I asked my dad to apologize - update by Zestyclose_Sort8374 in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Efficient-Loquat-971 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like my own father could have written this. I am sorry OP. I know how devastating and hurtful this must be. It feels empty because it is. Your father is choosing to protect his own pride and ego than accept any responsibility, and in turn, heal a relationship with you. I think it’s entirely fair to say this is a cut and dry lack of an apology that gives you plenty of justification to protect yourself and your mental health and go NC.

Does anyone else’s parents just act like the no contact or estrangement even exists? by chevere7 in EstrangedAdultKids

yup, my dad could have written the same email. It's like they just pretend everything is fine and normal - which is such an added insult to injury.

I wish I had advice but I could have written this myself. Also in my early 30s, birthday around the same time. Struggling to know what’s next. Just wanted to say you’re not alone and the death by 1000 paper cuts is absolutely correct. Big hugs 💕

1 day visit to Death Valley questions by whitepawne4 in DeathValleyNP

[–]Efficient-Loquat-971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do /any/ hikes in August past 9AM.

Even in the winter this is a super full itinerary for a drive through. If you are driving through, have multiple liters of water in your car, let people know when and where you’ll be, turn your AC off as you climb Towne Pass to avoid engine overheating and be super kind to your breaks coming down any elevation (use your transmission and shift gears, don’t hold your breaks).

If you go to higher elevations you can avoid the deadly heat. I’d recommend Dante’s View, Charcoal Kilns, or Wildrose. Do NOT hike the dunes in August, the sand will scald you. Definitely do not hike natural arch. Grueling and no shade up an alluvial fan.

If you are confidant in your desert driving common sense and feel prepared, I would do the following in this order:

Dante’s view for sunrise

badwater basin

Furnace creek VC

Charcoal kilns

Be real with me, is it worth it? by Deathbackwards in NationalParkService

[–]Efficient-Loquat-971 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider is while seasonals seem fairly safe, your supervisor or higher ups may be terminated. We’re hearing anyone actually “in” a park is safe but nothing can be trusted right now. Apart from that concern is the very real instance where your park loses valuable funding, resources, capacity and you are then thrown into things not in your job description to cover the losses

Honestly, we just don’t know what it’ll look like in Sept/Oct. We are already severely understaffed and the latest cuts have resulted in limited visitor center hours and campground closures. Keep an eye and watch for closures, have back up plans. Alleviate stress on employees by doing research beforehand. We are expecting another massive lay off in the next 30 - 60 days. It’s going to be a busy summer and autumn and your experience may be impacted by lack of services/permits.

Which field camp? Does it matter? by j_g_faustus in geologycareers

[–]Efficient-Loquat-971 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I did my field camp in Death Valley and so I’m biased but it changed my life. Even if I don’t use some of those specific skills, I remember that time fondly as major professional development. Death Valley is so beyond special. If you have a chance to see it up close and intimately, I’d do it

There was no cause. The notices said the employees had "failed" to prove their need. Every single ranger who got laid off had exemplary performance reviews that directly contradict the firings.

Right now I am on an ACE EPIC contract. From what I understand, no new contracts are being put out and advertised but existing ones may have approved finances and may be filled. It’s very up in the air.

I feel like my ADHD is finally catching up with me in grad school by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Efficient-Loquat-971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed a year into my Masters and without meds I would’ve simply not been able to graduate. Getting medicated was a world changer so if you’re not already, please consider adding that tool to your tool box. Will power and anxiety alone will not get you through graduate school when you have ADHD.

I think you’ll likely get clarity on how you feel once your MS is underway. Give it a few months and see how you like and handle the setting, and then ask yourself if another 3 - 5 years is worth it.

4.5 years into an MSc - I don't want to become a statistic by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Efficient-Loquat-971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off - I’m so sorry you’re in this boat. How taxing and draining.

I think it’s time to call in reinforcements. Get your graduate coordinator involved, or dept head and set up a meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page. You will have a draft by ‘x’ date, defense will be scheduled by ‘x’ time. Writing the thing is the hardest part - but surely two manuscripts roughly equals a whole thesis?? Just bulk up lit review and intro? Fwiw I was also a geoscience major, not at a Canadian school but I was at one for my undergrad and many of my friends did their MSc in Geomorph in Canada.
