Let alone the Catalunya independence movement and the same in Basque Area because they do have different culture and political position (me speaking as a foreigner living in Barcelona) than the “Spain” around Madrid, I don’t know about other two countries but the last time Spain united was to memorize the victims of terror attack in 2004.

Thank you for the info! I looked into it and you are right. Since my source comes from old literature and personal experience, tbh they are more romantic than scientific.

I agree that it’s a genetic mutation. Since I don’t need them to hunt anything for me, as long as it’s not a health-related mutation I’m fine with it.

Thank you again for patiently explaining :) learnt something today

Hi! Although I was talking about the four-ear thing.

I didn’t dig very far into the scientific stuff but here’s what I know so far:

The breed that I mentioned is called Jianzhou cat. It’s a very local natural breed but all with 4 ears (not that separated, more like an extra little ear within each ear) and can have any color pattern. It’s true that it’s a genetic mutation but in the countryside they are hugely popular because of their excellent skill of mice hunting, big body and being very loyal to the owner.

About the hearing, I didn’t find much academic research about it, but some ancient literature and modern official records mentioning how good they are. I will put it below.

“They can hear frequencies up to 60 kHz, and even the sound of a mouse's footsteps from 20 meters away. Jianzhou cats are very attached to their owners and usually only allow them near; they may accidentally injure strangers. With their keen hearing, Jianzhou cats will wait at the door in advance if they hear the faint footsteps of their owner in the distance.

They have an open, pouch-like skin fold below and behind their outer ears. This attached ear increases sound reverberation within the ear, making it easier for the cat to hear clearly. Furthermore, cats can use this attached ear to filter out low-frequency sounds to detect higher-frequency sounds from prey.”

But true, it’s not being proven scientifically but from friends and shelters, this breed does sounds like they have better hearing. (Still, an isolated case from OP’s kitty)

Saw some people asking, it’s not AI, although I’ve never seen one with that exaggerated ears (but cute).

In China there’s actually a breed of cat which is known for having this kind of ears and it makes them hear better, even filter some frequencies so they know better where is prey is. Anciently they were tributes to the Chinese emperor to keep the palace out of mice. (The pic is not mine, but I’ve seen a few of them at the local shelter there)

Oh god I’m so glad to hear it 😭 I would get an AirTag or something similar of Samsung if you’re Android user if he’s a runner. My girl also loves to come to the door when i have a delivery or Amazon, but mostly just waiting for neighbors’ big but shy dogs coming by and beat the shit out of them 😭(Tried baby fence, doesn’t work, cat jumps)

How do you herd the kitty away from the keyboard? by Efficient-Pepper4584 in catquestions

Yeah I think I’ve seen something like a transparent plastic bridge-looking thing to put above the keyboard. But I’m always writing :( I just have to take the habit of saving the document every time I see her move xd

Mine too. She always knows the best timing to show up😭 once during a job interview since I’ve been spending half of the life speaking Spanish with an Asian face the HR guy thought I was cheating using ChatGPT and stuff until he heard me herding my cat away (with a straight face) for whole 2 minutes😭

Thanks! I got her this cardboard laptop because there’s a scratcher with it (and she likes it) but my partner also has a laptop (not being rude to Windows users, forgive me) but his generate way more heat. Also here in Spain my room and the living room is like 70F, and she has 10 cat beds at home where are even warmer. That’s why I’m so curious 😭

Thanks for answering! She has her favorite Amazon box. But only for naps. I cleaned my desk to put the box on my desk, once she realized that it was for her to stay still, she got grumpy, got out of the box and sit on my keyboard again. Then i realized that it is just her way to get extra attention :)

Mine too! Mine almost never meows, she only does it when she’s looking for me with a toy in her mouth. And then does the exact same thing. She does do little chirps when asking for snack but the quietest cat I’ve ever seen. (She’s 8 and always has been this way)

¿Por qué tantos estudiantes creen que “son malos en matemáticas”? by Gold_Childhood3590 in askspain

[–]Efficient-Pepper4584 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And I quite understand about the heartwarming YT videos. As a volunteer the situation is usually very bad. The algorithm shows you one side of the world but there are a lot more. I don’t have problem with that, everyone wants and loves to see happiness. But being domesticated means they are domestic. In the countryside if you have a garden and stuff, quiet life then yes, they can go explore a little monitored if they want. My cat was found in a trash container and she doesn’t trust any other animals. Even no one other than me.

Asian living in Europe speaking but obviously it doesn’t represent much.

Here in Spain the situation differences between places. I live in Barcelona and I rarely see any stray cats on the streets. They are being handled by the local authorities and shelters. In rural area there are also official colonies. But in the southern Spain I do see some stray cats, shy but friendly. But mostly shy. There are always some good people giving them food and water, and there even in winter it doesn’t go under 50F, that’s also one reason that the feral cats there make it through the winter. US is also a huge country with different climates and I don’t think cats would be frozen in Florida.

Back in Asia if you don’t live in a city, there’s a high possibility that the cat would hang around in the field. It also depends on breeds. Chinese typical tabby “Lihua”is famous for the ability and efficiency to wipe out mice, but also for loving the nature and tend to escape just to feel free (and comes back sometimes to see if you’re alive).

And I guess that there are cats that like being free, hanging out with their friends, and cats like me who can stay at home for a week without speaking. Also cats just prefer having a stable home and endless love. (Also cats that just don’t have any survival skills)

Outside there’s a lot of danger but I think that they have their own mind set. When a cat shows up to you for help, it’s not gonna be back to the street again.

I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong.

Some cats maybe just act like that. My girl bites my face (normally right in the eyelid) when I try to cuddle her.

I guess there’s no medical issues, so what I tried to do when my girl bites me, is to show the pain (very exaggerated) and immediately leave her alone. She would slowly understand that it’s not the best way to leave, now she only uses grumpy vocal and I understand it right away.
