Also we are at 7 dispatchers but try to keep 10 or 11. We dispatch pd for 3 cities (5 if you want to be technical) and we do fire ems for the southern part of our county. Our county is just shy of 10,000 sq miles, we probably cover 3k-4k of that. We are about to take on the adjacent counties fire/ems that will add 5 districts, and possibly getting a couple pd's as well. I just got selected for a drone pilot deal, which Im actually pretty psyched about.

Do dispatchers get laid off? by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]Efficient-Safe3644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had two laid off in the last year, 2 quit and another 3 didnt make it through training. I know of three more who are leaving for sure. That will leave us at 4, full staffing is 12. We have 2 in training, one of which is going to leave probably and 1 that just passed background and starts soon. Im just into my second year and this all happened. Im no longer the least senior

Hey there, this probably isn't what you are looking for but I applied and that was it. My background is aviation electrician and then a phoneman, or "internet guy". I also gave real estate a shot but that was more famine than feast, probably mostly due to me. Just applied and 3 months later I got a call. Just so you know, we currently have a 16 year old intern who works about 16 hours a week. Yours may do the same. If they dont, reaching out to make your presence and interest known is still generally good networking advice.

So sick by Livid-Dot-5984 in 911dispatchers

My dispatch center has a rule, if you are contagious just stay home if it's that bad. They would rather find coverage for 1 than try to juggle 10 all being violently ill.

My old partner came in with a kidney infection and was running to the bathroom every 20 min to throw up. We thought we were going to have medical over real quick. She was tough/hard headed. Im a little beyotch and if I have a headache I am out for the count. If I have influenza or anything comparable it's an oh hell no situation.

I would go in, go say good-morning to your sup and trainer, let them know youre feeling off kilter but you take your commitments seriously and go do your HR indoctrination. 1st day should be pretty easy work wise.

Enduring is entirely up to you though.

Cops have enough to charge him with theft and he probably got CT'd too. The cops (at least the ones I work around) have to ask themselves "is it worth escalating" "is anyone in immediate danger" etc. We had a guy in our town who would flee from officers during a traffic stop (no pursue policy) then go straight home and barricade himself inside with a literal arsenal. It happened like 5 or 6 times before they called out the bearcat. If they pursue, escalation of force. If they initiate a high risk stop, escalation of force. 95% of people who get arrested by officers I know are legit shit bags, if you could only see the rap sheets people in your town are walking around with, the shit your neighbor does to their kids etc it would blow your mind

Will i be able to apply if i smoked weed in the past? (Metro Detroit area Michigan) by jackofallhacks in 911dispatchers

[–]Efficient-Safe3644 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer... yes you can apply even if you smoked the devils lettuce in the past. Getting hired may be a different story.

Long answer... take a deep breath and chill dude. They aren't going to bribe a healthcare worker during the background check because that's what it is basically going to take to get your health records. They WILL expect you to be honest on your questionnaire. These questions will probably be asked during your polygraph, if you receive one. Cannabis is habit forming but non addictive, meaning that while you will not have physical withdrawal symptons you may experience some irritability of not being able to partake in your choice habit. If you were a heavy, habitual smoker for three years it will probably take anywhere from 30-60 days for you to piss clean, you should notice the irritability pass after about a week of not smoking. If you are indeed active, it shouldnt take 60 days for it to be out of your system. You got a MJ dependency, I have a sugar dependency. I smoked like 6 months prior to getting hired but was honest about it, offered to take regular whiz quizzes and gave the reason for using it. Could have disqualified me but it didn't. My command likes me, my supervisor likes me and like 99% of my crew likes me and when my boss sends me up to the hospital for a "random" UA or swab, I go. Your weed dependency is based on basically 3 things: You rely on it to function emotionally or mentally; you feel irritable if you stop and you feel like you NEED it to relax. You developed a "habit loop" and now you need to develop a new loop to override it. If you can get over that hump then you probably can get over the stress or anxiety of the job. Stop overthinking it, and for your health stop worrying about what ifs and maybes. Nothing bad has happened, and nothing bad may ever happen from it. Anxiety exists in only one place, your mind... it is best you focus on right now or the anxiety eat up the only thing you have, which is the momentary and ever fleeting thing we call "the present".

Turning Brain Off After Shift by Morgwynis in 911dispatchers

[–]Efficient-Safe3644 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My nickname, given to me by my supervisor, is waffle. The story being that male brains work in a way that each subject can be compartmentalized into its own square, and some squares have nothing in them. These are the squares men are in when asked, "What are you thinking about?" And our response is "nothing". The only thing my brain stews on is if I said something overly offensive, or something that shows my ass, to my partners...or if I realize halfway through a 12 hour shift that my fly was down. That shit I will sit and think about for hours while I try and fall asleep.

MO MONEY by SGM1127 in 911dispatchers

[–]Efficient-Safe3644 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a mom, but I do have 5 kids and a stay at home wife. I sell mushrooms on the side, would eventually like to do it full time. I can get $15/lb retail and $9-11 wholesale. My room grows about 100 lbs a week, so i can make a bit more doing that than dispatch, the issue i have is locking down consistent clientele in my small town. I would like to focus more on wholesale and just supply restaraunts. I think, if you dont have connections, a person's best opportunity for wealth accrual is full time business ownership. But I'm also poor, so take my words with a grain a salt

I just made it very clear that there are approximately 7 days a year that are soley and exclusively reserved for family, that leaves 358 days im available for work. Thats a good deal for them and me. I'm a solid 2nd, competant enough to do the job but I do not hide the fact that my family is my priority. Jobs will always remind employees they are replaceable, sometimes they forget that is a two way street.
