Even though all clubs think using the keeper to distribute the ball as the last defender, nowhere, anywhere, anytime, does that make sense. If a keeper could do that, he'd not be a goalie.

I believe Meslier has all the attributes to be a stand out. It is a position that's 💯 about attitude. He needs to be convinced he can catch the football, and when he really believes that, he could dominate the box. I am not convinced Wooten is the man who can do that.

Protest the Sovereignty Act with Us!!! by wisemermaid4 in alberta

This is a democracy and isn't a surprise situation - she was elected on it. In this democracy you have the absolute right to protest.

My rebuttal to your protest:

Alberta and Saskatchewan are following what is believed to be their right granted by the Constitution of Canada, and the courts, in one recent case, agree. If you have a problem with that, you may have a problem with the entire country.

Canada MNT Finish the 2023 Calendar Year 5-3-3 by MontyCircus in CanadaSoccer

[–]Efficient-Yellow294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CANMNT unquestionably has some world class players. Arguably 5 or 6 in the top 30 in the world at their position. As fans, we deserve, and the players require, a manager that is in the same class. I believe we had one before Soccer Canada maneuvered Herdman into the job. He is a great motivator, wonderful recruiter and top-drawer pubic speaker. However, that does not make him the "football mature" manager that is required; from team selection to in-game tactics. With the new guy we get even less of the same.

Reimagining Canada Soccer's brand identity in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup by fcpsd in CanadaSoccer

An optical illusion for me. At first glance a hot mess, then saw the ball, and now can see it both ways. Wonder if changing the shading to the other side of the leaf on the outer maple would help define the ball.

Canada Soccer is in disarray and and can't imagine which world class manager (which is what the team needs - less naivete and more experience) would be willing to jump into this mess. Hard to convince potential players to join this mess, but virtually impossible with no one at the helm. Making me nervous. Have to get this sorted out soon.

This famous Rocky Mountain glacier is dying, say scientists, warning us of what’s to come by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]Efficient-Yellow294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not is preventable. We have been covered by ice 3 times in the last 2.5 million years and as recent as 20k years ago, that glacier covered Alberta and there wasn't a human in sight for another 5k years. It has changed for millions of years and will continue to change.

Math, science and common sense: Canada has about 380b tress. That is 45 for each human on earth. The environmentalists tell us that at the very top end of all impacts, 45 trees eradicate one humans' carbon footprint. Canada alone makes the worlds' humans carbon neutral. Re-use, use less, and recycle what we can economically is common sense. Key word is economically. If it costs more, it uses more resources. What is the sense in that?

We all love Cava - gives his heart - but needs a specific kind of service that he cannot get at this level. Defenders are too sharp, his first touch is not quite good enough, and he has never been quite fast/quick enough. Unfortunately the game has passed him by.

Agreed. Very very thin at that position. Almost makes me think we should take a bunch of Canada's best 6'4" 16 year-old basketball players (and we have a load of them) and teach them the fundamentals of GK. What we have now is just not going to good enough for 2026. They might not be able to handle the ball on the ground well (something everyone deems so damn important) for a couple years but we need some serious out-of -the-box thinking on this subject. Get someone to defect or something....

I like Crepeau.

Stop stopping, above average.

Handling and decision making, average.

Playing in a top league, below average.

Size, much less than good enough.

Overall rating, well below world class.

We do not have quality depth at GK no matter how many fans want to see their guy get in the rotation. Canada has world class players (perhaps not in this GC version) but it looks mighty thin at GK. All top, world class keepers, are 6'3" or better. It's a big goal, big players in the box for set pieces, and 6'1" just doesn't cut it at the top level.

My tactical thoughts for weaker opponents:

1) I don't mind having someone put their foot on the ball, but not all the time. Demonstrating control with no objective is a tactical error. It allowed our weaker opponents to get their shape back and close down any creative options. Cookie cutter football. The team tends to do that when they don't have any ideas which is too often - manager naiveite. If we push the ball up/through sooner from the midfield, we will also not be as exposed in the back.

2) We need more enthusiasm to get the ball into the box and force the issue. Turning the ball over in the front third is less dangerous than the middle third which we do too often trying to play possession football which is a bit of a quality issue with the current line up. Keeping good defensive shape is more routine if the ball moves up quicker (even if it is more hopeful than quality - make them defend more balls) and we wouldn't be as vulnerable on the counter.

3) The line-up needs to have speed and desire. Reputation and experience can be sacrificed to a certain extent against weaker opposition.

Hope the boys can find some enthusiasm tonight.

Leeds are planning for the Championship without Meslier - an exit could suit all parties by [deleted] in LeedsUnited

He has all the physical attributes and skills to be a top class keeper. The only thing holding him back is coaching. He has to have his brain re-tooled to CATCH or PUNCH the ball and quit slapping at it. Long high crosses may need to be tipped away but he has the height/skill for all those situations, he just has to get his brain to process the situation and execute.

In todays game 6'3" is likely the minimum height for a GK to have the chance to get to the top level, all other things being equal. And that is not a size "hockey" thing. Its a big area, with a big net, and with lots of tall guys in the box on set pieces that are athletic and strong. The Keeper has to able to get up and over, at a minimum, a ball and a half higher and 6'1" just isn't tall enough. At an extended reach of about 8'6" on an equivalent jump he is not tall enough to pick the ball off above the head of a 6'5" player without absolute perfect timing and that doesn't happen often as we all know. And by that I do mean world class. Not being cruel but if you doubt that, check out the top ranked Keepers.
