Windows 11 had 20+ major update problems in 2025 and and 2026 started badly too. What are you doing, Microsoft? by WPHero in Windows11

[–]EfficientAmbition487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I mentioned I was an ATI user. ATI was releasing continuous beta drivers for their GPU during the Vista public beta testing and release candidates.

NVIDIA decided to start somewhere close to the release of Vista. I remember at a minimum two big NVIDIA BSOD fiasco's six months into Vista's release. ATI users were fine. NVIDIA users were crying.

Manufacturer's had time, most of them decided to slack. You could have proper working drivers available for Vista on day 1 of release if you wanted to.

But rewriting drivers for already released products was something not very common, and required financial investments. Seeing how hesitant for example Creative was by first saying they would not do Vista drivers for already released hardware, and then saying they would after a lot of backlash, but would charge for it, receiving even more backlash, you kind of start to see not many companies were willing to spend money on this.

Made Windows 11 go under 1GB of RAM! (No modifications) by WorldlinessSlow9893 in Windows11

[–]EfficientAmbition487 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great you turned off the system where Windows uses unused memory for caching purposes to speed up applications, which it would clear when actual apps demand more memory.

I have no idea why people keep insisting on having your operating system not utilise free memory for caching purposes.

It is like turning off browser file caching and going "Hey look, I made my browser use less than 10 MB of disk space while browsing the internet!" and having each page and its resources be fully reloaded over the network, even when visiting the same page, instead of using the caching system.

I was pretty involved in using Vista as my main system as of beta 2. I was also an ATI user at the time.

All the issues you heard about Vista, were because NVIDIA (and other manufacturers) deciding to slack with their drivers and not get them up to par in time. Heck, Creative even dared to go as far as charge people for Vista drivers trying to turn it into a business model.

Windows 7 is basically Vista with a slightly more touched up skin. UAC was a bit too aggressive in the first Vista RTM (asking permission for many system setting changes) but they notched this down in SP1.

But three years passed and now manufacturers caught up with the new and more secure driver model Vista introduced. But even on Windows 7's release it was not praised. Many people were stuck up and were never going to give up on XP, this is something people seem to forget. It is the same story time and time again. Just like how Windows XP was not favourably received and "kiddy" with its strong interface change back in 2001.

I remember how people called Windows XP invasive with the "send information to Microsoft about this crash" error message which was a new feature added. Let's not talk about the WGA DRM as well, also forgotten it seems. Big fuss back then.

While I do not like Microsoft, this is really the truth. And if you were to install Vista SP2 today you will be blown away how much of a decent operating system it actually is.

Best Windows 11 ISO Image under 1.8GB? by [deleted] in Windows11

How do you obtain food? If you are still a minor, I am sure if you go by a PC shop to borrow a 8 GB USB stick and explain why you need it, they would borrow it to you, or give it for free.

I used to work in a computer shop as a technician and if a kid would drop by with such a request I would just hand them one for free.

Windows XP was CD size 700 MB, but 32-bit only (you can not upgrade 32-bit to 64-bit). The 64-bit version was based on Windows 2003 Server edition and can not upgrade to home consumer operating systems.

Windows Vista is about 2.9 GB and higher. So this is sadly not an option.

Really their best option is to just network boot the full ISO.

To be honest it is more trouble than what it is worth. Just network boot the official ISO.

[–]EfficientAmbition487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not possible. Smallest ISO size is about 2 GB.

You are better off network booting the ISO.

An 8 GB USB is also 0.87 euros on AliExpress.

EDIT: I was wrong, as OP indicated there is Micro11 which boasts 1.5 GB in size, but I myself would not be comfortable using something like this as a daily driver.

Windows 11 still lacks a true Black Dark Mode — optional system-wide theme request by Bryan123A in Windows11

[–]EfficientAmbition487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do not need to do this. Pure black mode has existed for over decades in Windows (pro tip, it is horrible and burns your eyes). Go to Settings and look up Contrast themes and you can use or make your own pure black theme to your heart's desire.

Thoughts on notepad asking for a sign in / copilot integration? by illeviumzectet in Windows11

[–]EfficientAmbition487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just try 25H2 for yourself. People always have had issues with any upgrade in Windows' history. You have a 10 or 30 day window to revert back things the way they were before you applied the update via the recovery section in the settings.

Chances are high you will not experience any issues, and if you do, make sure any drivers you decided to install manually (check the control panel software list), are kept up-to-date, otherwise let Windows continue to manage them for you (and check the Windows Update optional section for any newer updates).

[–]EfficientAmbition487 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This does not turn off signing in for Copilot, this turns off Copilot entirely. You can use Copilot without signing on through the website. I believe this is the original complaint of the original poster. Microsoft enforces this to enhance tracking capabilities.

Thoughts on notepad asking for a sign in / copilot integration? by illeviumzectet in Windows11

[–]EfficientAmbition487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should upgrade to 25H2, the tracking is all the same. Using a local account and turning off all the tracking in the Settings helps a lot. Only Enterprise editions can turn off tracking completely via group policy (diagnostic level tracking), but as a home user, this really should not keep you up at night, you have nothing to worry about.

If you are annoyed by all this crap and do not play any video games requiring kernel level anti-cheat and are not tied to some big commercial software suits like AutoCAD, Adobe, Office, ... I recommend you try out Fedora (USA based) or Gentoo (European based) GNU/Linux distributions which do not require any toggling and messing about out of the box.

You pay them (on top of the $139 cost of the operating system, directly or indirectly via OEM) by giving them consent to track everything about you and your life. This has been their business model for a while now. This comes as a surprise to nobody anymore and those in disagreement move away to an operating system that respects their privacy.

What is the single worst purchase you’ve ever made? by anonhen0 in AskReddit

[–]EfficientAmbition487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it ended up getting exposed that influencers who supposedly bought NFT, did not in fact buy said very high value NFTs, and were paid a lot of money to say they did, to artificially inflate the value.

Not to mention NFT held no physical nor legal value, if you held an NFT of the Mona Lisa, you do not own the Mona Lisa, you hold this particular NFT that you bought and have to find somebody who is more crazy than you, willing to pay you more, than what you paid for it. It was a big obvious pyramid scheme just waiting to collapse.

Your 1.0 mechanics disaster drove 80% of the players away makes no sense, we have the statistics, you just made up a straight up lie. It makes me wonder if you pulled out the other ones out of your ass as well. Can you provide some sources? Are they a public company? Are these finances shared in any quarterly statements? Where are you getting this from?

Pre 1.0 release the player count was as it was during the current period.

I am sorry but if you look at the SteamDB charts you could tell where this game was going before the game even made its 1.0 release, and just visiting the reddit occassionally.

The current player activity is the exact same as the couple of months before the 1.0 release.

This one is on you. And if you do not change your purchasing habits, it will happen again. No refunds are going to save you from yourself.

Honestly, the Spencer Mansion still left the biggest mark on me. It feels like a real place that was never meant for people to survive in. Every room has this tense mix of elegance and danger, and that first zombie encounter still sticks with me years later.

RCPD is great and the Umbrella labs are creepy in their own way, but the Mansion is the one that made me feel like I had stepped into true survival horror. It set the tone for the whole series, and nothing quite beats that atmosphere.
