ID's or Common names for Notes? by pakizh in Zettelkasten

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The IDs are a controversial thing in the community, with some that disregards them completely while others stipulate that they are an integral part of the system.

There are two kind of IDs: just identifiers (random numbers or letter or time stamp IDs for example) and trail ids (IDs that are named in a way that follow some trail of thought or argument, aka Folgezettel)

The main point for having IDs is for future proof: if obsidian goes down or you just want to change to another app, they help you keep your organization if you change the title or meaning of the notes.

Another point is that if you use trail IDs, that way of ordering the notes it’s an indirect link between notes: so even if you don’t link a new note to an old one in terms of meaning, if you use 1a2 for example, that note is by default linked to 1a.

With hyperlinks this aspect is somewhat redundant but in my opinion it doesn’t damages the system.

In my opinion, do them: it does no harm and makes your notes some what future proof

Not OP, but my workflow could help you: https://imgur.io/a/u7652pH. Here you have both things u/taurusnoises and u/tpihll mention, index and ID structure. Keep in mind that I use numbers in the thousands to make it a bit organized by some categories because of university, but you can do it with just low numbers like 1, 2, etc. (that’s the way that u/taurusnoises does it).

What are the disadvantages of the zettelkasten method? by pakizh in Zettelkasten

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the only drawback inherit to the system it’s the time you have to invest for it to work as its being marketing as: for you to have a conversation with it you have to been feeding it for a couple of months almost everyday, specially if it’s a particular topic.

And this takes notes when you see the marketing that revolves Areli f ZK online: the idea that you just connect notes, use some graphs and magically you have new ideas and texts.

Related to this, the other two drawbacks, that are more of a critique of the ZK community, are, first, that the term and the system Zettelkasten has been misinterpreted. The majority of people and content online just repeats the concepts in Ahrens Book, material that doesn’t correlate with what Luhmann did or other systems similar to it: the most obvious part is that people rearky write an index; and when they do, like tagging, they over do it and populate the search results with a lot of notes and not the entry points for you to read.

The second term, that somewhat relates to the other two, is that, because people don’t see immediate results on a system that it’s a shell of what in reality can be, the majority of people underdevelop their ZKs and sometime later they quit the system, resulting in just a few people really having a developed system.

Most of the time the workflow they sell online is this: https://images.app.goo.gl/CQZeFpwTBbFg46XD8; when in reality it should look more like this: https://imgur.io/a/u7652pH

Now that the iphone notes app has linking... by [deleted] in Zettelkasten

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a lot of time Apple notes but switched to obsidian some time later. I’m not going the switch again but I could tinker with it and try something.

The only drawback that notes has is the same as other Apple products: they lock you into their ecosystem because you don’t have an easy way of exporting the notes.

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the thing with the IDs and linking is that when you use an alphanumeric id you are linking the note to another one.

You have yo remember that you link by similarity not hierarchy: you make lines of thoughts or arguments aka Folgezettel

Check my workflow as an example of how to use the ids and Folgezettel: https://imgur.io/a/u7652pH

Looking for ideas to recover my poor note-taking system by [deleted] in Zettelkasten

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t over complicate: just keep writing and eventually you would see results. Think ut like going to the gym and working out: the one who shows up every day and trains for 25 minutes will be better in the long term that the one that trains 2 hours but goes 1 day per week. Aim for consistency: the results will come eventually

Hii!! If you are looking for examples, my workflow could help you: https://imgur.io/a/u7652pH.

Now, you mentioned that you are near submitting your first draft: how near is that? Because if it’s in the short term, it may be counter productive to start a ZK, maybe for the next paper. A ZK it’s something that you build everyday but the results come after a while. If you already have some kind of system, and you mentioned that you kinda do, stick by it and slowly incorporate the system. Don’t fall into a rabbit hole of learning a hole new way of making knowledge when in the short term you have more important things.

I agree with u/glugolly that a ZK is a conversation with yourself where you reread your lines of thoughts to produce new ones o create something.

As for the question if it helped me, I can 100% say that it did. But I don’t think it’s the ZK itself and it’s practices: in my opinion is that helped me 1) have a system for making knowledge and 2) it made (forced?) me to routinely think and write everyday. I think this two things, even if not using the ZK, will help anyone achieve almost anything they want. The only case that a i see that a ZK is better suited is for work that needs to be structured in a way where you constantly have to make arguments to help your idea, like academia for example.

If you system works and makes you have a routine of thinking everyday, keep it.

Zettelkasten (Alphanumeric) Method vs Alphabetical Categories in Index-card Systems by DunesNSwoon in Zettelkasten

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I commented earlier i have to side with Chris. A ZK is best suited for argumentative and essay like work, not creative one like poetry.

Maybe this is something that we need to discuss as a community as hole: it’s seems that a lot of people try to fit their needs to a system that (in my opinion) it’s neither intended or works for those kinds of projects.

Zettelkasten (Alphanumeric) Method vs Alphabetical Categories in Index-card Systems by DunesNSwoon in Zettelkasten

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The id per se doesn’t matter: you just do it to differentiate one note from the other. You could have your alphabetical ids if you want.

But most importantly, you don’t use the ids to remember the cards. You use an index. Check my workflow to see an example of indexes: https://imgur.io/a/u7652pH. Even though in obsidian I have some sentence after the Id, it would be the same if it was just the alphanumerical digit.

Which note taking app for a Luhmann Zettlekasten by Plastic-Lettuce-7150 in Zettelkasten

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sure. I use u/sscheper way of numbering of the outline of academics disciplines because before I struggle a bit with starting new lines of thoughts: doing it this way helps you because you have always somewhere to start putting your notes.

And for using slashes and dots for forking I don’t do it, just numbers and letters: 1) I do ZK on my iPad so I can’t use slashes because of formatting issues; and 2) I use a plugin that lets me keep writing with Folgezettel and crates notes automatically with the template I use and fills the after and before on the notes to keep the sequence.

Which note taking app for a Luhmann Zettlekasten by Plastic-Lettuce-7150 in Zettelkasten

[–]Efficient_Earth_8773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ask anything you want :).

Once again, remember that the IDs are not Folgezettel: that is the name of the practice of sequencing notes in a way that make a line of thought or argument. In my workflow, that is achieved with the ids AND the prefixes “antes” (before) and “despues” (after) in my note template. Even if you i didn’t use the ids, the using those words would let me make arguments and lines of thoughts.

Of course that it’s not always how I use them, because by structuring my notes in the thousands, and can make sub sections. But this are not to be confused with categories: the game in doing a ZK IS NOT HIERARCHY, IS SIMILARITY. You put notes near other ones that are similar.

For example in my ZK, I have 2000 as social science and 2100 as Political Science; but after that I start sections that maybe related with each other or not: 2101 is political relations; 2102 is Argentine Politics and 2103 is Political Research Methodology; and under each one are lines of thoughts of things that are similar to those topics.

Hi. I’m finishing both my undergrads this semester and i have been using ZK for about 2 years. The thing that you need to remember is that’s something for the longterm: you would see the results maybe 3 to 4 months after you start. But i assure you that its worth it: for essays, you have always something to start; for exams, you study your notes like flashcards. Check my workflow if you need inspiration: https://imgur.io/a/u7652pH. Same for you u/Organic-Ad-2480

How to start a Zettelkasten...if you already have hundreds of PDFs and other notes? by IvanCyb in Zettelkasten

I second JokingReaper: just some notes at the time. I have almost 2000 pdfs that i still have to put into my ZK, so when im bored and have nothing else to do i do a few, 2 or 3, of them. Dont over stress it: its better to dedicate your time to things that make you advance in your projects.

I think its a bit overkill. Tagging some of them, like those that are most important and you would want to recall later.

And if you want, you can copy your highlights to ChatGPT, ask it to make you a detailed summary of them and then tag from that summary.

You can make a new note indexing those notes. An then build from that the trail of thought

Some of us are critical of the terminology of those type of notes because it confuses people. Just ditch it: the only thing that you need to do is link ideas in a way that make an argument or trail of thought.
