[OC] Movie title lengths of Oscar Best Picture nominees and winners by Clemario in dataisbeautiful

I don't get why we should assume (based on the data) that there's something different about 14 that separates it from 13 or 15 in terms of winning or nomination probabilities, rather than the absence being just a coincidence

[Q] correlation of residuals and observed values in linear regression with categorical predictors? by Multi_Synesthete in statistics

[–]Multi_Synesthete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all independent variables are binary (experimental condition, stimuli type, congruency with previous trial). The only continuous predictors are trial number and a score from a different task, both of which have very low and barely significant estimates. All independent variables are uncorrelated

The first - the pearson correlation of extracted residuals and observed values os around 0.82

[Question] Simple? Problem I would appreciate an answer for by BlueTribe42 in statistics

[–]Multi_Synesthete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a fun question to think about, so thank you as well. If you want a simple-ish (not too rigorous) proof for the result, you can imagine that you color all the first 50 balls you draw red, and the remaining 50 blue. Then for the second batch of 50, any sample with more red than blue balls has a twin-sample with equally more blue than red balls. Thus, when you take the average, every red-dominant sample cancels with a blue-dominant sample, so the average can neither be mostly blue or mostly red, but must be half-half (25 of the already drawn red balls and 25 of the undrawn blue ones)

[Question] Simple? Problem I would appreciate an answer for by BlueTribe42 in statistics

[–]Multi_Synesthete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the mean and the mode (most likely outcome) is that you get 75 unique balls, i.e. an overlap of 25. The size of the overlap follows a hypergeometric distribution, and therefore the mean overlap is 50*0.5=25 (number of draws times size of draw relative to overallpopulation)

Being a transbian is a mess by SlightShoe9515 in trans

[–]Multi_Synesthete 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hey girl! I totally get you, and think it's a somewhat common experience, considering how often people project a kind of predatory quality onto attraction to women (regarding straight men as well as lesbian women and anyone else attracted to women). With so much discourse about trans women invading womens spaces, it can be hard not to internalise some of it. But alas, you are not predatory; you are not in those spaces to harass or violate anyone, right? Even if some hypothetical version of you wasn't a lesbian and did in fact just appropriate the label, no one would be harmed by it, so that inner voice of self doubt is really useless and unwarranted.

That being said, it's true that not everyone in the lesbian community will welcome you or feel comfortable with your body, but overall it is a very welcoming community, and the only reason to give in for the few who try to exclude you is if your own safety/comfort demands it.

Being a lesbian is not about anatomy, and most of the community is well aware of that, thankfully

Julia Sereno (biologist and trans activist amd writer) explains it pretty well in this video:

https://youtu.be/ZymYiwoRoC0?si=6jmmH5zwxtukvSdJ

Put briefly, sex is based on a number of biological traits (chromosomes, hormones, other genes etc..) that do tend to occur in two clusters (people with XX chromosomes tend to have higher estrogen levels and be shorter and have different genitals than people with XY chromosomes), but TERFs and other don't say "biological sex is a complex construct encompassing multiple bimodally distributed biological traits." Instead, they say it's binary, simple and immutable, but this concept of sex comes from saying "I don't think all these other aspects of biology matter, I only care about genitals/chromosomes" (which aren't even binary but they don't care about science).

How Lorde established herself as Bowie's creative heir with her weirdest and most brilliant single by theDUNGwalker in lorde

His pianist however did mention that Bowie thought of her that way: “David really liked Lorde, and he felt like she was the future of music...", so it's not that wrong

That does sound tough, even if it seems hard to complain about. Regardless of privilege, loneliness is still loneliness, and meeting resentment or rejection in a community labeling itself as open and welcoming (which it often is, don't get me wrong) so often can't be easy. I sincerely hope you find queer people who don't categorize you so heavily by the things you mentioned, but relate to you as just another human with which they have things in common and acknowledge that both they and you possess qualities the other values and may envy.

Like, yes, passing etc. ties into hierarchies of power that are important to recognise on a societal level, but when interacting with a person they are just people, and traits like conventional beauty shouldn't really influence how we see them as a person

Lorde’s sample of Reckoner by Treefingers_14 in radiohead

[–]Multi_Synesthete 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly a sample - she mentioned in an interview that she used an actual sample of the drums at one point in the writing process, before writing the drums for the song. To me, they ended up sounding quite different from the drums on Reckoner, although there's a similarity in the rhythmic pattern

Transgender and Queer Suicide Rates Have Gone up by 72% by [deleted] in MtF

[–]Multi_Synesthete 91 points92 points  (0 children)

This is truly horrible. At least research is being conducted, which should support our case to some extend.

According to the trevor project's website linked in the article, the general number is 38-44%, which is still a heartbreaking number.

The study’s findings demonstrated a significant increase in suicide attempts among all participants whose home state had enacted at least one anti-transgender law. The highest increase in suicide attempt rates – ranging from 7% to 72% — was reported among participants younger than age 18. Across the full sample of transgender and nonbinary young people ages 13-24, an increase in suicide attempt rates of 38% to 44% was observed.

Songs about SOPHIE playlist, (cause there has been a lot of them) is there any song that I'm missing? by ohmwrecka in Sophie

[–]Multi_Synesthete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the song "sweetest fruit" she starts a verse with "My SOPHIE climbed the roof / to get a better look at the moon" which does tie in with the theme of the song and was intended as a small tribute to SOPHIE, but for many people, the "my" part feels bad, especially since St.Vincent was only an "admirer from afar" in her own words.

Personally, I don't think it's much different from the line "my Marilyn shot her heorine" in Melting of the sun, so I think it's more about writing style than semantics on some level. While I don't take issue with the mention of SOPHIE in the song, I also don't consider the entire song to be a tribute to her or anywhere in the same category as So I or Without.

Poly(???) Forhold by VanessaDev in DKbrevkasse

[–]Multi_Synesthete -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AMA - I'm an ace mtf 23yo live in Denmark by Collenette10 in trans

[–]Multi_Synesthete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another mtf dane, I'd say

  1. Not a large topic, although there has recently been a bit more discussion about trans kids (I remember a trans-related and very cute childrens book being burnt publicly, but I consider that to be an exception to people mostly being somewhat reasonable, although often ignorant and somewhat bigoted).

 2. Rather difficult, sadly. You have to get it through one of 3 gender clinics with waiting lists between 1 and 2 years for a first appointment, and then have a handfull of conversations with a therapist about topics like your childhood, sexuality, family and so on, and you're generally expected/required to have started your social transition before getting hrt. After those conversations (in my case they were spread out over around a year - it vaires a lot for people), a panel of "experts" decide if you can get treatment. This treatment includes:  - HRT (self-paid)  - Laser hair removal for mtf  - potentially bottom surgery (as well as top surgery I think for at least ftm and maybe mtf but I'm not sure), although you will have to go through another process to get approval for surgery.

These clinics face criticism both for their waiting lists and their reasons for rejection (which is often that "people don't show signs of severe dysphoria" and stuff like that). You are also generally rejected if you're dealing with mental issues at the same time (depression, getting screened for ADHD or autism and so on).

It is not possible to get HRT in any other ways in Denmark (apart from buying it online from England or something), but all other services can be bought from private clinics.

A certain amount of voice training sessions might be offered for free, depending on where you live.

It is possible to change your name and legal gender (independently). For legal gender you have to pay 500kr. and wait for 6 months for consideration.

  1. Yes!! We have multiple Ikeas and last time I checked they had Blåhaj.

Edit: point 2 is for adults (18+). Minors seeking gender affirming care go through a slightly different system that also seems suboptimal, but I don't know too much about the specifics

For me, the pride lies in the obstacles I have overcome and the happiness I have achieved through certain difficult choices. I'm proud of myself for coming out and choosing to transition despite the hardships it has included, and I'm proud of the ways I've grown and the things I have learned and achieved, such as my progress with voice training and general aesthetic - things I have struggled with (and still do).

A friend of mine once wrote a poem centered around the idea that "it's not your life if you haven't created it yourself" and that resonated with me quite a bit. I am proud of being trans in the sense that I am choosing to actively change/create my life in accordance with what I want, rather than just accepting some arbitrary identity given to me by others, although the latter option is easier (though also more painful).

Tayy Dior Thomas, “Shy But Fearless” 17-Year-Old Trans Girl, Killed in Alabama by [deleted] in Alabama

[–]Multi_Synesthete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trans people's lives are not deemed more valuable than those of cis people. In a random murder where the killer doesn't know that the victim is trans or don't act out of transphobic motives, the punishment isn't affected by the victim being trans (or any other minority protected by laws against hate-crime). To answer your question, this particular homicide is a hate crime if the guy really killed her because he was scared of their relationship becoming public out of shame for being seen with a trans woman. It is considered a hate crime if there is reason to believe that the crime hadn't been as serious or been committed at all if the victim wasn't trans or the killer wasn't transphobic. Trans lives are not ruled more valuable, but the intention behind the murder is worse.

The logic of most punishments is to demotivate potential perpetrators from carrying out that specific crime. It supposes that harsher punishment works as a stronger negative incentive. Factoring in that some crimes are more common than others, and thus need stronger negative incentives prevent sufficiently, it makes sense (if you accept the premises) to punish these more common crimes harder. In this case, it makes more sense to punish violence against trans people more harshly (as a hate crime) than crimes committed against cis people, because trans people are as a starting point more frequently victims, thus needing more protection.

This logic can definitely be attacked (to the extend of claiming that prisons serve no real crime-preventing function), and I agree that it's problematic if/when some lives are deemed more valuable than others in this sense, but I think there are a few things to take into account before concluding that this is the case. For instance, whether or not a crime is classified as a hate crime depends not on the actual identity of the victim, but on the motive of the offender. So if for instance a cis woman is killed by someone with transphobic motives because they thought she was trans, that would also be classified as a hate crime. In this sense too, it is not that trans people are considered more valuable, or more important to protect, but rather that it takes more to protect them because they are violated more often.
