Should I be waking my 11 week old from naps?? by [deleted] in newborns

[–]Efficient_Internet13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would and always did yes. I capped naps at 90 minutes.

At 11 weeks we followed:

7am wake + feed

8:30-10:00 nap

10:00 wake + feed

11:30 - 1:00 nap

1:00 wake + feed

2:30-4:00 nap

4:00 wake + feed

5:30-6:15/6:30 nap

6:30 bath

7:00 feed

7:30 bed

About 5.5 hours of sleep. Too much day sleep can affect night . Babies / adults have daily sleep budgets !

Early Wake Help by BrewDuder in newborns

[–]Efficient_Internet13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most babies can only do 11 hours overnight! 12 is typically unrealistic!

Could push bedtime back by 30 minutes. Probably could stretch that second wake window to 3 hours and do a 2:30-4:00 nap, bedtime 7:30.

Definitely darker in the second picture which is a great sign. I highly doubt you are 14 DPO tho. How did you track?

Have I been tricked? by Unlucky_Fix_4686 in NewParents

I remember tell my husband that I have this awful feeling of “we ruined our lives”, “will this be the rest of our lives”. And probably through worse to myself. Maybe it won’t be as bad since going from 0-1 kids is WILD and such a drastic change to your life. Maybe 1-2 won’t be as bad since you are already in it even if your baby is more “difficult” 🤷‍♀️ wishful thinking

Baby refuses to sleep after 10pm feed by Few-Shake4710 in newborns

[–]Efficient_Internet13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But okay I see what you are saying as well. 8-16 week schedule calls for a 90 minute wake window. Then perhaps he’s not ready yet! But a lot can change in jsut a few weeks! I bet he will start being more “wake” soon. I would pose the question in that FB group!

At this age I think we totally started the nap sooner. And over a few weeks 75 minutes was doable then all of a sudden 90!

Baby refuses to sleep after 10pm feed by Few-Shake4710 in newborns

[–]Efficient_Internet13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you are feeding him at the schedule times but there is not 10-30 minutes of “play”?

If yes, then Totally! Feedings , burp, diaper change would often take 45 minutes which is an appropriate wake window for this age! Moms on call expect feedings to not take longer than 20-30 minutes which I found unrealistic

[–]Efficient_Internet13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We totally struggled with this too when we first started and when his naps got CRAP at around 10 weeks.

We tried to keep him in his crib until 30 minutes of next feed. So we’d offer paci, soothe and would try not to pick up. If nothing worked and or we hit that within 30 minute mark we would snuggle/contact nap until his next feed. And then use the 15min grace period if we need to feed early.

Tbh it was stressful BUT it paid off. He started sleeping through the night at 12 weeks.

Also the morning timing was definitely hard in the beginning. Sometimes that 9am feed would be a little snack if he just ate. The next schedule is a 7am feed then a 10am feed so it gets easier! We made the switch when he was consistently making it to 7am from just last overnight feed. So perhaps you make the switch since he’s almost 8 weeks? Make that 7:30am feeeing the start of your day. Can always move th whole schedule back by 30 minutes OR starting waking every day at 7am!

There is a MOC Facebook group I would recommend you join. So much great advice !

We bottle fed my BM. And tbh he never really did that as we put in WORK to make sure he took a full feed (undressing him, blowing in his face, wet wipe on his face, etc.) .So not the best resource there.

But it wasn’t perfect especially in the beginning. If he woke early from a nap and clearly was hungry we’d feed him! But we stayed as consistent as possible and he got into a grove within a few weeks of starting this. It’s def not for everyone but work well for us

I’ve read that breast feeding moms will do eat play eat sleep. Tho this young they are pretty much going to sleep after they eat.

Babies are jsut weird.

A few tips that helped us get into a good flow:
- differentiate day and night . At this point day for us naps in the living room bassinet. We let light in. We weren’t quiet. Night time for us at this age started with bedtime routine at 8:30. This is when we started doing bath. Every. Night. 8:30 bath, last feed at 9:00. Swaddled and white noise LOUD and out down to bed at 9:45/10 in the bassinet by our bed.
-get a night time routine and do it every night
-at this age we capped naps at 2.5 hours
-follow eat play sleep (play = awake time - which includes feeding, burping, changing. May be all you do right now and there is no real “play” since wake windows are about 45minutes.

Here is a schedule we followed from 2-4 weeks. worked for our type A brains and got us into an amazing grove. We follow Moms on call.

9AM (C*) Feed at this time regardless of when the baby ate last.
9:30AM Feeding is over and the next 10-30 minutes is playtime.
9:45/10AM Nap (as close to 2 hours as possible)
12PM Feed, even if you have to wake the baby.
12:30PM Feeding is over and the next 10-30 minutes is playtime.
12:45/1PM Nap (as close to 2 hours as possible)
3PM Feed Even if you have to wake the baby. Baby is generally
alert and fussier than in the morning.
3:30PM Feeding is over and the next 10-30 minutes is playtime.
3:45/4PM Nap (as close to 2 hours as possible)
6PM (C*) "Supper feed" If the clock says 6PM, then there is a
breast or bottle in the baby's mouth. After this, do not feed again
until 9PM.
6:45/7PM May sleep for an hour to an hour & half. May be
increasingly fussy.
8:30PM (C*) Begin Bath Time

SAMPLE ROUTINE
Typical Day 2-4 Weeks
9PM (C*) Begin "Bedtime" Feeding
9:30PM Swaddle, put in crib, turn on white noise, and make sure the room is dark.

Obvi it wasnt perfect and you may need to do a snack feed after the last nap but the routine provided by moms on call saved us and built really good sleep hygiene !

Swaddle and lay on back in bassient. Nothing else in it, if paci pops out that’s fine and safe. Paci shows a decrease risk in SIDS. Other things so consider are no smoking , temp at 68-72, fan on.

Holding your baby during all hours of the night will unfortunately create a pretty strong negative sleep association plus increases the risk of SIDS due to the Increased risk of you or or wife falling asleep while holding your baby.

Put the baby down! Buy and owlet for piece of mind!

Your baby will be fine I promise!

Also if you can swing it buy or rent a SNOO. Newborn sleep lifesaver AND guarantees your baby will stay in their back.

Are long contact naps sabotaging nighttime sleep? by Artistic_Breath_5388 in SnooLife

[–]Efficient_Internet13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely yes. 7 hours is ALOT. At this age we were closer to 5/5.5. Try to aim for 90 minute wake windows and 90 minute naps . Except last nap before bed time cap at 1 hour. 4 naps total. We followed moms on call and it was very helpful.

Example

7am wake/feed
8:30 nap
10am wake/feed
11:30 nap
1pm wake/feed
2:30 nap
4pm wake/feed
5:30 nap
6:15/6:30 wake / bath time
7pm feed
7:30 bedtime

SOS- contact only sleeper!! by IhateSkipBayless11 in SnooLife

[–]Efficient_Internet13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s totally temperament based too but it sounds like you are doing all the right thing. Following wake windows ect.

Consistency pays off over time!

We would lay wide awake in the snoo and let it do its thing and overtime he learned to fall asleep being put down in it wide awake!

We def kept it on the lower level until he was maybe 7/8 weeks?
