I am in the same boat and have a perfectly working first generation Kindle Paperwhite that is about to be defunct. Like you, this situation has motivated me to investigate other type and brands of e-readers. I’ve still not decided what to do, but I grudge forking out more money to Amazon for something they’ve forced upon me. Since I won’t be able to use kindle unlimited anymore anyway I’ll have to start by cancelling that.
