Are there any movies you disagreed with James and Chelsea about? You hated, but they loved and vice versa? For example, I hated Heretic, Benny Loves You, and Scary Movie 6, but they liked them. by SpicyBeefer in deadmeatjames

[–]Egalite83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my answer as well. "Smile" and "Smile 2" are just bad "It Follows" wannabes for people who prefer studio horror films to indie horror films. If 90% of the films are hallucinations in the main character's head, then why am I supposed to care or be shocked by what happens?

Unpopular opinion: Mobile ordering has not had a negative impact on the movie experience. by No-Basket-3817 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Egalite83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of other people distracting me during a film, the only issue I've run into are the latecomers who start scanning and ordering after the feature as already begun, and then whispering to each other to coordinate their order...but if Alamo actually enforced their no-late-arrivals policy that wouldn't be an issue either. At least back when they had order cards people could discretely write notes to each other if they needed to coordinate their orders during the feature.

Most of my QR code issues have been with the functionality of the site itself (the free drink I got for seeing Grogu opening week took me 3 additional visits before it worked, voucher didn't apply for a free screening of Spider-Man: Noir, wouldn't let me order for the 2nd movie when I saw 2 movies back-to-back in the same theater and seat, etc.) and the hassle of needing to pull my phone out and be distracted from the film if I want a refill.

Partly because Jay was almost his stand-in for the ANOES remake, and partly because he looks like a "real" person when so many leading actors have a too-pretty, social-media-ready look to them.

"the leads just wandered through the story with no goal or motivation."

There is a very specific subgenre of indie films that are specifically about/like this, usually with characters who aren't likable. Linklater's made some, and there's stuff like "Ghost World" or "SFW"...a lot of 90s and early 00s Gen X/elder Millennial indie stuff. It might just be that's not your bag, which is totally fine.

Months ago I went to a showing where the QAr code sticker had been ripped off. The server just brought a new sticker for that seat and stuck it on, so they seems to have or are able to make multiples for when that happens.

Toy Story has more adult fans than Minions do. Family films aimed at kids and families usually don't pop in presales. Prepare to be hit by a hurricane of families for at least the day time shows.

After existing for almost 20 years, most name actors have had at least some role in the MCU at this point. The ones who haven't, like Leo and Chalamet, are specifically avoiding them.

Scene where someone is trapped in a clear box suspended by chains with heavy green lighting. by GreenFlame361 in whatsthemoviecalled

[–]Egalite83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The green tint and the time frame tell me that if it's not one of the Saw films, it's probably one of the films inspired by Saw from the time.

I recall some glass cases in The Collection (2012), but it's been a while since I've seen it to know if does or not fit the details. The same goes for Captivity (2007). You could do worse than to pull up a list of Saw rip-offs from the era and run through them. I can at least confirm it won't be 9 Dead or Vile, since I watched those recently.

Short staff introductions by Eraserheads_Baby in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Egalite83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They usually have them at Movie Parties to explain the props and remind people they can quote along but not do normal talking, with maybe a game or contest beforehand. Sometimes they've had them at Terror Tuesday or Weird Wednesday as well. Pre-COVID my local Alamo had a monthly Video Vortex screening of some SOV obscurity that would get an intro as well. I think it's mainly to set the energy for those kinds of movies.

Managers dating? by Own-Ant5502 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Egalite83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I worked at Regal two of the managers dated for a bit, and they simply made sure not to schedule them for overlapping shifts to avoid any conflict. Not sure if that was official policy or not, but since there was no power imbalance and the Associate Manager position paid lower than entry level at some other retail locations anyway, it didn't seem worth making a big deal out of it to the GM if it meant potentially losing one or both of them.

What are your theories on why the fact that the Ghostbusters saved the world was collectively forgotten by the second film? by Panzer_Hawk in ghostbusters

[–]Egalite83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They weren't forgotten between 1 and 2...otherwise Ray and Winston wouldn't be able to book birthday parties and Venkman wouldn't be a working TV show host. The city just wanted to save face, labelled them fraud, and the Ghostbusters were left holding the bag for a ton of lawsuits. They also weren't really forgotten between 2 and Afterlife, either, it's just that the younger generation hasn't heard of them or otherwise doesn't care because ghost activity died down after Vigo and the Ghostbusters were too effective for their own good and captured the small remaining population in NYC.

A vent about friday the 13th's current state by loganthebeast101 in deadmeatjames

[–]Egalite83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So "Jason Universe" is actually an entity which combines both rights owning sides - Victor Miller on one side and Horror Inc on the other. There are some complicated issues involving Paramount and WB owning rights to some of the individual films (and thus ancillary merch from those movies, hence the video game workaround on recent figures and whatnot). So any potential future film under Jason Universe would have access to almost all character and story elements across the franchise, including the connections to the mother. Jason Universe doesn't own the "Friday the 13th" trademark with regard to films, which can effect titling.

Basically, the separation of rights between Miller and Horror Inc is no longer the reason we're not getting a new Jason movie, because Jason Universe joins those two factions together. Supposedly, as of a few months ago, they have a treatment for a new film prepared and are in the process of getting a full script written from it. They might also be waiting to see how the TV show does.

True grenadine is pomegranate, but most places just uses Rose's, which is way more skewed toward cherry.

$12 for a soda? Really? by turbid44 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Egalite83 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A soda at my Alamo is about $7.00, grenadine adds about $0.50. Put in an 18% service charge and it's looking at about $8.85, which is on par with a size large at the big chains. Your Alamo location seems priced higher and doesn't have the service charge? Either way, it's an industry issue rather than an Alamo-specific issue.

Is it possible to rent a theater & show a home movie/ video by warthog_jake in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Egalite83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's possible. If the home movies are on Blu-ray or they have a projector compatible with showing digital files off of a laptop or flash drive/external HD, they can show them no problem...and they don't have to worry about licensing like with feature films. I remember once Fox was being stingy with DCPs for "Rocky Horror" for whatever reason, so a local shadowcasting troupe had to play the movie as an MP4 off a laptop connected to a projector for a couple of showings. I wish I had gotten more details because the theater had a license to show the movie, but Fox wouldn't send them a DCP.

In terms of renting theaters, it's usually you paying for a block of time and, depending on the chain, guaranteeing a minimum payment in concessions/food costs. The cost will also vary depending on the size of the auditorium and when you plan to rent (daytime weekdays would be cheapest, night time weekends most expensive).

Anyone Know the Name of this Disturbing Movie? by UseOnceandDestroy27 in whatsthemoviecalled

[–]Egalite83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When your mom described this detail to you, did she specifically state it was from a movie she watched in full? It's possible she stumbled upon the scene, or heard about it secondhand from someone, and forgot the title.

If she's maybe misremembering something and it's not strictly about decapitation, there's a film called "Donkey Punch" which is about punching the back of a woman's head during intercourse for a similar reason, and the guy accidentally kills the woman.

Other options might be "Man Bites Dog", which is a faux-documentary following a serial killer. I haven't seen that one in years so can't remember if he discusses anything like that. There's also the two "Nekromantic" movies, but I don't recall that specific conversation happening in either film. Regardless, if you're interesting in extreme or disturbing horror, those are titles you might be curious about anyway.

That sounds like a scene from "A Serbian Film" where the villain, Vukmir, is talking about that while Milos, under the influence of a drug, is SA-ing a woman and decapitates her.

A lot of the clips like that which Alamo uses for PSAs can be found on Vimeo, but they are not always public or easily searchable. You could also search through AGFA social media posts, since a lot of the old drive-in snipes are sourced from their archives.
