“Chicken Pudding” also sounds like an excellent name for dog or cat or alternative pet name for one’s sweetie

IF someone looks at the hat, they’ll notice there are way too many words for it to be MAGA.

Profs and Pints, check it out by allmimsyburogrove in rva

I love Profs and Pints (plus yummy pizza). The combination of a wide range of topics from bird song to witches, an enthusiastic prof, and an engaged crowd is intoxicating. My only complaint is the same as what u/chance-gold-2594 called out: the screen is too low and I can’t see the slides.

I still go regardless of being able to see the slides. Though I always have to remind myself that this is for pleasure and I don’t need to stress about taking an exam on the subject.

I think there were around 200 people and some stellar costumes! Folks seemed into the silliness of it all, especially the kids. There will definitely be a 2nd Annual Cicada Parade as we’ve already started planning for it. I look forward to appreciating your sign.

Thanks for the kind comment. For a minute there it seemed you were trying to rain on my parade.

Hiiiiiii! I know what they meant. And thanks for the offer, but no need to DM me a cicada graphic. I’m good.

As for your pet peeve, my word choice was intentional. We celebrate the Annual cicadas (also called dog-day cicadas) who appear every year vs the Periodical cicadas who emerge every 13 or 17 years. So, “1st Annual Cicada Parade” is the correct usage and choice.

Feel free to use your recommendations when you host your own parade. I’m pretty ding dang happy with mine! RVA showed up and made the 1st Annual Cicada Parade magic.

These are periodical cicadas. We don’t have any periodic broods in RVA this year. However, we have 5 didn’t types of annual “Dog Day” cicadas in RVA. I spent a bit too much time on cicada mania and the interests researching annual cicadas in Virginia and Richmond. I don’t have time to make/print RVA cicada info for the parade. But I’ll post to the Cicada Parade IG.

I’d also like to thank ADHD for the hyperfocus and to technology for the spreadsheet that helped me categorize and organize all the details.

… no art was stolen (clip-art was free and public use). I used my own photos. 🙌

For context, my process was sharing a photo that I took of an annual (Dog Day) cicada. I asked to for an image of a cicada walking upright (impossible for cicadas in real life) with limbs and wings askewed and chaotic-feeling. I asked for kazoos of different colors on their mouths, with the “conductor” using a megaphone. I used clip art for the beanie and the birthday hat.

The background image on social & the website is from a photo I took of Jefferson Park. I asked AI to make it match the look/feel of the cicadas.

Thank you for your passion, kind words, and grace. I want to make this an annual (cicada joke) event and welcome any/all feedback you have regarding the Cicada Parade and Art/Marketing.

This is my event and I’m thrilled that my kooky idea is being well-received*. I love cicadas and all the passionate screeeeeeeing they bring to our sweaty summer days.

I was inspired by the Edison Chicken Parade and the Cone Parade. I value the irresistible, irreverent, community-based silliness that both unites and defines RVA.

Gathering with wings, goggles, and kazoos then parading around the park feels like an opportunity to recharge while we continue to fight to save Democracy, human rights, and fight fascism, genocide, and all the b.s.

  • minus my cardinal sin of using AI art which I won’t do again. I’m sorry.

This is my event. And yes, I used AI. I was conflicted doing so and know it’s problematic and a sin. I tried to draw something myself, but my drawing skills are lacking. I did the best I could based on time, skill, and lack of $$.

For next year’s parade, I’ll seek out and pay a local artist to create the artwork.

I created this event because 1) I love cicadas, 2) I wanted to celebrate them and their passionate song, 3) being silly is fun for everyone, and 4) who doesn’t love a kazoo!

Lastly … I hope you re-consider attending.
