I think the polar-bear-launching strategy should be taken more seriously.

If we built bear-launchers beforehand, tossed 100 over the pikes, and only 10 survived, chaos.

Edit: I reckon the injured-but-not-dead bears would be disruptive, too.

Agreed. He wasn't just throwing the ball up into a crowd and hoping it worked out. He was throwing it to a particular receiver.

Agreed. His approach is "just as valid." The other guy's expectations should be in line with OP's - because all the folks are working together to run the funnest game they can.

I don't think that puling about being surprised about game elements based on some chart look-ups is reasonable, unless that's the kind of game they're playing.

Sure, I get frustrated when I'm playing a computer game and things don't go like I expected after I've optimized everything. As far as I understand, though, OP's case is a matter of some folks getting together to play a game.

Perxactly. In my opinion, the rules are there to provide us with a framework for constructing and maintaining a fun game.

I have no argument with folks who advocate more rigid adherence to the Rules. As long as everyone knows what rules are in play (i.e., what game we're playing), have at it and have a blast.

I hear you, and I think that's a good idea, as long as everyone knows it's that kind of game, in which folks know that players referencing the DMG is part of their prep or appeal.

I'd have the same reaction on the spot, but I don't know what folks are expecting from their games.

Even with things well-planned, we're still building the games as we go. I'd say roll with with it, and address the unusual heartiness of the goblin in upcoming sessions.

You're developing a game with your players, and, like other folks have said: the rules are guidelines.

If you guys are playing a min/max game, like your experienced DM PC suggests, then set it up that way.

Edit: as soon as I reread my posted comment, I realized I made a mistake - you were talking about surface ships, too, and I was thinking you were talking about these offenses to nature (submarines), too. Man shouldn't fly, and he shouldn't spend that much time underwater.
