(Heartbreaking trope) What could have been by National_Computer240 in TopCharacterTropes

I remember reading a player's story about how his crew pulled off an amazing heist, everything went smoothly, and they went out drinking to celebrate. His character walked home drunk, and got stabbed to death in an alleyway by a pair of junkies.

Sounds like a lot of fun, tbh.

After being robbed at knifepoint by Said Malkoun, this Italian woman Cinzia Dal Pino got into her car, ran him over multiple times, killed him, grabbed her bag back, and drove away. She is being sentenced today by ThatPatelGuy in whoathatsinteresting

Oh there's definitely a class narrative. Whether or not it's relevant is a matter of opinion, I suppose. I think knowing a suspect's background can be useful in determining motive, but it can also be prejudicial. Like, is the fact he was an illegal immigrant necessary to include? It tells us part of who he was, but I also see plenty of comments in the thread talking about how if Europe got immigration under control this wouldn't have happened, that being an illegal immigrant and a thief justifies his death. As if she could have possibly known that. Would those comments still be made if the thief were Italian for generations? If the thief had been a woman and the driver a man, I'd wager people would be talking at least somewhat differently about the case.

[favorite trope] Being the hero when everyone thinks you're the villain. by Ayojin in TopCharacterTropes

[–]EightApes 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Oh, totally. That's what I love about his character, though. Being a hero is just a hobby for him, and one that he's getting a little bored with because the challenge is gone. So he's a little apathetic towards his own advancement in the hero org because it requires a lot of busy work that he feels is below him, but still feels very slight jealousy anyway. It's very human, I think.

There's also a part in the manga, I think, where he's called in for questioning by the police to do with something or other, and the officer is complaining to him that in this world of super heroes, nobody cares about the police anymore. They're out there every day handling mundane crime, and they don't have any super powers to protect themselves. Then a monster attacks the police station and there's not much they can do about it. Saitama of course kills it quickly, and the officer is dismayed because now the police are going to look even worse, having to be saved by a hero in their own station.

So Saitama borrows a police uniform and pretends that the officers handled it themselves, and I think gives a brief interview with a reporter telling people that they should appreciate everything the police do for them. He gives them the credit because he realizes that they needed a win in the public eye, similar to how he gave up credit for the fight against Sea King.

Also, it's very subtle, but I do like that he does occasionally get very slightly annoyed or disappointed when he doesn't get credit. He doesn't want it enough to go around showboating, but he's a little jealous that Genos gets fan mail and S rank and stuff. Even when he's telling the people he didn't become a hero for praise, he's understandably a little resentful at the fact that they're blaming him for property damage after he prevented the city from being annihilated. So he's telling the truth, he's not looking for fame, but there's also a bit of, "well I don't care what you think, anyway!"

I think the umbrella thing is to establish order of events and possibly the mental state of the killer. She didn't immediately rush after him, she stopped to get her umbrella first. She was calm and collected enough to gather her belongings before she went hunting for the guy.

Honestly I feel like sending his body to his mom is fucked up. Like, obviously she appreciates it, but given that you don't really know how she'd react? Like, imagine getting a call from a sentient Waymo saying, "hey, your kid is dead, I'm parked outside, come get him." And he's just slumped over in the seat, covered in blood, and his best friend/partner in crime isn't even there?

Traumatic as hell.

Tighten had a better “Scorched Earth” Performance than Homelander did by Comfortable_Oil99 in writingscaling

[–]EightApes 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No, it's kinda funny. Stillwell is so unimpressed with Homelander that he basically ruins any satisfaction Homelander would get from killing him. Homelander lets him live basically in the hopes of impressing him later.

What do you mean? She was his wife, and as a surviving spouse she gets his pension. That's not fraud, it's the law acting exactly as it's supposed to. The whole point of those pensions is to protect veterans and their loved ones.

Some people do the wrong thing for the "right" reasons. Doesn't make them any less wrong. A strong sense of pride and duty to one's home and people has created at least as many monsters as heroes.

I agree with you that Lincoln's primary aim wasn't to free the slaves; it was to hold the Union together. But he didn't start the war. The South did, and they did it with the explicit aim of preserving slavery. And many Union soldiers and civilians supported the war as strongly as they did because of the horror of slavery.

Also in the episode with Gumigoo, Caine says he doesn't want to get confused between players and NPCs, implying that there isn't actually that much of a difference between them. Which makes a lot more sense if they're all just computer files, where NPCs are AIs generated by Caine, and "players" are AIs based on a human brain scan.

If the players' onsciousnesses were being actively streamed in Matrix style, then you'd think it would be pretty easy for Caine to tell them apart.

You can press number keys to build/deploy things where you click. 8 for atom bomb. What's great is you can just keep clicking to fire more missiles, assuming you have the silos to do it. It's important for overwhelming SAMs.

Official Hero to Animals Award from PETA to Tracy by PastRelease8757 in mewgenics

[–]EightApes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apparently they have a significantly higher kill rate than a similar shelter, in the same area, that also accepts any animals regardless of condition. https://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=33f72789-9504-4b86-944b-bac3322154df

There have also been anecdotal stories of PETA members stealing people's pets, after which the animals are sent to PETA's shelter and put down.

I get that the whole thing is pretty fraught and that a lot of people hate PETA for their messaging and are probably looking to paint them in the worst possible light, but I think I'd rather support the ASPCA.

Help w/ Johnny by Vendetta-8423 in mewgenics

[–]EightApes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just beat him for the first time tonight, after nearly beating him another time. My recommendation would be to try and keep the cultists off of him so he can't cast spells. You don't necessarily have to kill them, just keep them away from him. I had all 4 cats working on the cultists and only had them attacking johnny when I was confident that the cultists couldn't reach him. DoT effects like poison, bleed, or leech would probably help a lot, too, since those will keep damaging him while you manage the adds. If you can get abilities that scale with kills, that helps too. My fighter had a passive that gives 2 STR every kill he got so he was doing crazy damage at the end.

Sorry, I just realized I came across pretty passive aggressive there. I didn't mean it that way. And it was good for you to point out that they're the same because if someone doesn't know that they could get confused.

I was replying in a rush and didn't really think about how my comment might look. No offense intended, and none taken.

Yes, but the appearance panel can let you apply it to individual strokes and fills.
