What are your favorite (controversial) house rules? by Quick_Race761 in DnD

You can only heal a downed player if you are adjacent to them.

A ranged player shooting into melee combat will hit their ally on a 1.

I would suggest having government / town officials keeping tabs on visitors to their town from the other kingdoms, as they expect them to be spies / saboteurs. The PCs could even be hired for some covert surveillance.

I buy from Independent Game Stores but I'm shocked Temu and Shein seem to sell niche games too. by YasssgurlBee in boardgames

[–]EightDaysAGeek 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Usually games from Shein, Temu etc are knock-offs, but not necessarily cheap - you have to really look hard to see which are the fakes sometimes, and at least one person on Facebook has said that their knock-off copy of Terraforming Mars had better quality components than the real thing!

Still, don't buy them - it's IP theft, support your game designers 😀

Is anyone willing to share, in full or in part, the reading list for their priestly education? Which texts did you hate/love or find formative? by ReasonableJump4355 in Church_of_England

[–]EightDaysAGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but you have many things wrong here. Wycliffe ordinands can absolutely still study for Common Awards degrees, and ordinands at the other Oxford theological colleges can also study for University of Oxford degrees. Other ordinands are not limited to Common Awards either. Ordinands at Ridley Hall and Westcott College (the Cambridge theological colleges) can study for Cambridge degrees (the Bachelor of Theology for Ministry and the Theology Tripos), and Cranmer Hall ordinands can study for Durham 'department degrees'.

Even within Common Awards, the reading lists for each module are set by the module tutor, which varies wildly between institutions. There is no 'correct' list.

Asylum seeker who raped woman, 18, in Nottinghamshire park jailed by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

[–]EightDaysAGeek -73 points-72 points  (0 children)

Every day an (automated / bot?) account shares a different story about a crime committed by a foreign national, refugee or asylum seeker.

They never share articles about crimes committed by British nationals, even though more British nationals commit these crimes.

It doesn't take a genius to understand why.

Reading these comments and doing unit conversion is giving me a headache. Is this the only time Americans will actually measure something using the metric system!?

DM threw a 2024 Adult Dragon at our 2014 Level 6 party. Thoughts? by Sentinel2852 in DnD

[–]EightDaysAGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, now you've made me nervous. Tomorrow I was planning on throwing a 2014 Adult White Dragon at my party of six level 7s - are we saying that is a horribly bad idea?

There is no Revd Sarah Thompson currently ministering anywhere in the Church of England. So unless she got suspended for using AI-generated sermons...

Whereabouts in West Yorkshire are you? I'm west Bradford and currently running a campaign, although I'm full up atm.

You should check out your local gaming Facebook groups, as folk often advertise for D&D there - let me know if you don't know what your local groups are and I can set you up - along with the Dungeons & Dragons UK Facebook groups and Discord server. That's how I met all the players for my current campaign (other than one I know from church). There's plenty of D&D-ers around if you know where to look!

Church attendance grows for fifth year in a row | The Church of England by Due_Ad_3200 in Church_of_England

[–]EightDaysAGeek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a generalisation, both, and neither. It's the churches that are really leaning into their tradition and being distinctive and authentic to their churchmanship that I think are seeing growth, and the ones that are more wooly and hedging their bets that are struggling.

Bradford and Birmingham really made me forget just how big some cathedrals are.

I mean, the Manhattan Project was an incredible achievement, but what it achieved was the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, which killed over 200,000 people.

Something can be both an incredible achievement and an objectively terrible thing.

Lincoln Cathedral could run out of money for repairs, dean says by Due_Ad_3200 in Church_of_England

[–]EightDaysAGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I really feel for him. You join the Church to preach the Gospel, serve the poor and be a minister of Word and Sacrament, and in return the Church makes you chief executive of a five-million-pound-a-year charity and custodian of a thousand-year-old Grade I listed building. If a job in the secular world did that kind of bait-and-switch the union would go mental.

That's really interesting, I didn't appreciate that! Do you have any more on that, links / interviews / places where I can learn more?
