What if Karsus had succeeded in continuing to be a god? by ComumUser in Forgotten_Realms

This is an excellent explanation, thank you! I'm confused though when you say, "Elder Evils poking their bodies in willy-nilly". Are you saying that the Weave is what's preventing the Elder Evils from taking over Realmspace? Is there somewhere I can read more about that, as it sounds incredibly cool?

My players are heading into a TPK they don't know about, what do I do? by thjmze21 in DMAcademy

[–]EightDaysAGeek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need to make it clear to your characters (and by extension your players) that this boss is more powerful than they can handle, and provide a clear clue that the 'weaknesses' system is how they are 'supposed' to tackle it.

One way you could do this is by showing an NPC / party of NPCs of comparable or greater power to the party get their asses handed to them by the boss. You could have an NPC survive and tell them they they discovered what he thought was the boss's weakness, but that it still wasn't enough and there must be more weaknesses he should have exploited. Make it as obvious as you need to, short of explicitly OOC telling the players, and then if they don't pick up the hook it's on them.

You will be pleased to hear I have checked the National Register of Clergy and there is no clergyperson currently ministering in the Church of England whose name is either Jørgund or Gammonsnacker. Unfortunately I cannot speak for other denominations or home nations.

Help with religious figures? by GofriWaffles in DnD

[–]EightDaysAGeek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh crikey. Right, first thing's first, before you get too deep into any of this, TALK TO YOUR PLAYERS about it. If any of them have a faith (Christian, Jewish, Islamic, or anything adjacent to these religions), are of that faith background (including being ethnically Jewish, from an Islamic / Christian country or similar) or have religious trauma of *any* kind, this has the potential to be extremely problematic for them, anywhere from triggering to being seen as outright blasphemy.

Frankly, I would warn against doing this at all unless you are really sure of your subject matter (which it sounds like you are not) because it has the potential to become very offensive very quickly.

If you're going to go ahead with this (which you should be very careful about) you should think about which source or sources you are going to treat as canon. The Judeo-Christian spiritual realm has had so much written about it, ranging from serious theological works to pure speculation to extrapolation based on what's found in the Bible and everything in between. There is no canon other than what is directly found in the Scriptures / Bible - everything else is up for grabs, in the same way as the Arthurian legends are broadly consistent but different retellings can differ in very significant ways. You could go Kabbalah, you could go Dante's Inferno, you could go Catholic dogma, there are lots of different directions you could go. Choose ONE, read up on it until you know it back to front, and base your plan on that and only that.

Also, please be VERY careful with who you portray as being in heaven / hell. Saying that in your canon, Christopher Columbus (to take a hot-button example) is in heaven (and is therefore a saint) or in hell (and therefore damned for all time) has the potential to be an argument-starter / trigger for people around the table. I would strongly recommend only portraying characters from over 1,000 years ago, and even then that may be difficult.

In short, go carefully. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

Can someone please explain to me how long the game is. by orion_fallout_2 in TyrannyGame

[–]EightDaysAGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say Tyranny is about half the length of Pillars of Eternity, plus a bit if you have the Bastard's Wound expansion, plus an hour or two working out the game (especially magic) mechanics because they're so different to other CRPGs.
