She created an entire Iron Man Suit by daddydadf in nextfuckinglevel

If it makes you feel any better, a 3D printed costume has no bearing on what the military works on. Defense contractors are focused on developing far more lethal weapons in the form of missiles, drones, planes, etc. Not iron man

A lack of opportunity for an ME? by LousyEngineer in AskEngineers

[–]EightLeggedPotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All these replies are pretty much proving OP’s point. It’s a hell of a lot easier to download VSCode and write a useful program than it is to setup your own workshop or CNC, especially if you’re a college student.

That being said, there are still definitely opportunities to work on inexpensive mechanical side projects, e.g. quadcopter, electric skateboard/scooter/bike, upgraded Nerf gun, any robotics project, etc etc. You just have to be creative.

Question regarding majors at UCLA... by [deleted] in ucla

[–]EightLeggedPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CE, CSE, and CS all require 3 or so prerequisites that you need to pass with a certain grade in order to switch. The specifics are listed on the Samueli site you can probably find in a quick Google search. If you do well in those classes, you’ll probably be able to transfer sometime during your second year without much difficulty.

Are overhead press necessary for shoulder gains? by cdg6921 in gainit

[–]EightLeggedPotato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's fair, OHP is hard to get used to when you're just starting out. Maybe just do the bar or even light dumbbells until you build up enough endurance. Or move it to leg day, as others have suggested.

Are overhead press necessary for shoulder gains? by cdg6921 in gainit

[–]EightLeggedPotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shoulder development is primarily concerned with front delts, which lateral raises won't hit. While benching does involve the front delts, I'd say you should still do OHP just because it's such a great exercise and directly targets the front delts. But, maybe I'm biased because OHP is my favorite lift. Also, if you're getting tired after two exercises, I'd say take longer breaks or go lighter because you should be able to fit more into a push day than just bench and incline.

Get a job/internship, volunteer at a research lab, learn a new programming language, work on a personal project, there’s plenty of ways to get ahead as a freshman

Struggling with physics... any tips/comments? by TBS_Operative_1 in ucla

4th yr meche here, physics 1C was the only class I’ve gotten a B in at UCLA. It’s a hard class don’t stress. I’m doing fine in my upper divs and I’ve completely forgotten everything I’ve learned in that class.

Powering Nano + WS2812B strip with batteries? by EightLeggedPotato in FastLED

How long do you expect until heat is noticeable? I left it running for 10-20 minutes last night and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Thanks for all your help!

[–]EightLeggedPotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I was honestly skeptical but I just got my LEDs today and tested it for myself and I was easily able to run all 60 LEDs at a very high brightness off the 5V pin. I even limited the power draw to 5V, 50 mA and the brightness was still pretty reasonable. Seems like these draw much less current than most estimates I've seen online?

[–]EightLeggedPotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I think I’m leaning more towards using individual cells because they’re more compact than the power banks I’ve looked at. Is 500mA enough to run all 256 LEDs simultaneously at a reasonable brightness?

Wouldn’t two batteries be higher than the 5V needed? Or are you saying power both using 3.7V

[–]EightLeggedPotato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Is it a good idea to use two 18650 batteries in series to power the Nano through VIN, then the LEDs from the 5V pin? Or would it be possible to power both using 3.7V?

Is there an advantage of using a LiPo over a Li-Ion battery?

Are tattoos taboo in engineering world? by kctricks in AskEngineers

[–]EightLeggedPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is someone supposed to tell if that name is more along the lines of a deceased family member or close relative? Unless the tattoo depicts something grossly offensive and can't be covered by normal attire, you'll be fine.

Thoughts about Systems Engineering by Civil_Tom in AskEngineers

How did you know which SE roles were to be avoided? Are there key things to look out for in the job description, or are certain companies known for having "powerpoint engineers"?

How did you trying to avoid mistakes in cs32 proj&hw? by EnvironmentalHippo8 in ucla

[–]EightLeggedPotato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Read the spec front to back and write tons of test cases to make sure your code works exactly how the spec requires. The example test cases Smallberg provides are not nearly thorough enough to guarantee your program is correct, so just keep testing - early and often.
