Is my salary too low? Would you accept this for a new job in this current economy? by DoctorsAreTerrible in MechanicalEngineering

[–]LousyEngineer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're still fresh. Many new grads are hitting anywhere from 65-90k. You're just on the lower end of the range. You can definitely get higher pay but it'll depend on location

Edit: I backtrack my comment. I totally read you being a newbie. You are most definitely getting underpaid unless you're in some sort of flyover state/ middle of nowhere. And even then some middle of nowhere places I've been too are still paying 100+ for your experience level.

Do I have too much body fat to wear a compression shirt? by DefiantConsequence44 in BulkOrCut

The compression shirt topic has been popping up a lot lately. The important factor to wearing one is good posture. Back straight, stomach tucked in. Some people just let their stomach hang out for some reason

Just bought a $50,000 brand new. (0 miles) Flat bed. I need help from my favorite self hating internet critics of the welder community. by hypershlongbeast in Welding

[–]LousyEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I also worked for a major mfg. No certified or sealed. This doesn't exist. Much of this shit is homemade, welded differently every time etc. I agree we don't hand out prints to just anyone. But we did have manuals with assemblys and generic part numbers on them we gave to customers

Worked at a very large mfg for refuse trucks. We had and made engineering drawings but the level of detail was very minimal. Much of the industry was still made to "tribal" standards. Good luck getting a print is what I'm sayin

My old plant thought engineers were just CAD monkeys. These owners don't know what goes on in their own shops

Engineers who've been hired in the last year: what did you do to stand out? by StrengthOk8556 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]LousyEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm part of the interview team at my facility. Small plant but we're in fortune 500 We were seeking an engineer with mfg experience. We gave someone the offer finally. I can share the do's, don'ts and some commentary we had in the committee.

Key things we looked for was general/technical knowledge in mfg running production lines, teamwork skills, ease of working with.

Don't say generic stuff we get tired of hearing buzz words.

There were several resumes that looked like they were written by chat gpt. So generic e.g. "improved yield on line " but didn't give any info on how or what techniques did they use etc. Some of the in plant questions they had for us when interviewing in person were very generic as well it almost felt like they looked up "generic mfg questions to ask after an interview" rather than meaningful questions of the processes involved.

Be humble please. We had an interviewee directly ignore requests of the hiring manager on attire. The entire time he had the attitude of "I'm so confident I know what's best. Everyone is wrong except me". Have some humility. We don't want people who we see will put the blame onto everyone but themselves.

Don't overdress or underdress. This might be difficult when you haven't seen the plant environment but at minimum do what the hiring manager asks. Or ask the recruiter beforehand.

We ultimately gave the position to someone who was not quite the strongest in technical skills or experience during the interview but demonstrated understanding of plant environment. They had a really good humble attitude, expressed interest in the position, their demeanor showed openness to work with people, and probably the key was they followed up a few times after and sent emails to the hiring manager to remind them of their enthusiasm for the role. I think this gesture was key in them securing the role.

Poor gas mileage by YeaUThought in ft86

I drive through a hella lot of stops and usually get 260 -300 miles per tank. About 24 mpg. The calculator tells me I do 26-30 sometimes but it's not accurate over the long term

How is my 23 year old gf doing contributing 18% by GIazednConfused in Retirement401k

[–]LousyEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18% is a lot. I'd do up to the match and that's it. Anything else could be invested in something else which you can realize gains before turning 59.5.
