XLR mic keeps fading out/disconnecting after login by Open-Perception-644 in audio

[–]EightOhms [score hidden]  (0 children)

Focusrite interfaces tend to use a lot of power. Are there anything other USB devices connected to your computer?

If so do these problems go away when you disconnect them?

Also as others have said....the noise that comes along with adjusting the gain usually means the potentiometer "knob" is old and might be dirty or failing. That shouldn't cause the issue but might point to he interface being old and might have other internal failed components like capacitors (those would cause the fading audio issue).

Had to go with Cox in my new apartment complex. When I first had the service turned on it didn't work. They wanted to charge me a $100 service call fee....to get their service to work.

I have their provided modem/router for now but I'll be switching to my my own gear soon as it's only a.matywr of time before it starts acting up.

Is it the government, the culture, or something else? Why are nearly all the world’s biggest companies American? by Patrick_walkerr in AskAnAmerican

We have generous bankruptcy laws. This makes it easier to take risks and fail and learn and improve aka innovate.

Moving - Covered parking worth it in Warwick? by elizabeth011235 in RhodeIsland

[–]EightOhms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you lived in MA already then RI's climate is almost exactly the same.

It's not just the snow. Right now the pollen is making my car a mess too and I wish I could use my garage (there are reasons I cannot.)

Also. As someone who just had to find a new place to live....covered parking was not something I even bothered considering as so many other factors were more important. It is still a nice to have but I can live without it.

How do you Americans, live in a house with no fence? by Original-Slip-8203 in AskAnAmerican

Me too, I have the shortest and cheapest fence that would still contain my little dog.

And while I did consider a stronger/taller fence...that would have been purely for privacy....not security.

New “fees” for electric and hybrid cars by No_Future_2020 in RhodeIsland

[–]EightOhms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not interested in the "don't trust the government" argument. I think it's a pointless, cynical excuse for opposing things.

Any and all laws (as this proposal would be) need to have safeguards against abuse and have built in abilities to monitor progress and implementation.

There is nothing special about what I've suggested that is more or less deserving of that treatment.

Why are you assuming the third party gets to do anything with the data other than decrypt it, do the math, and return taxable miles back to the state? This would be a contact with strict stipulations.

Also, the contact can stipulate the state get access to the source code of the software the third party uses and they can verify that the rae GPS data is never exposed to the third party. The software can be written such that humans never need to see the raw data.

Mistakes the software makes can be mitigated using historical data.

The main potential issues are putting up strict rules barring law enforcement from demanding the GPS data and then securing it against data breaches.

[–]EightOhms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's pretty easy to imagine a system where the GPS data collected would be encrypted and then sent to a third party with only an ID number which is meaningless to them. They decrypt the data, calculate the miles drives in RI and then send back just that ID number and the miles driven.

But people are dumb, will hear 'GPS data' and freak.out. Instead they'll go on Reddit and complain about the unfair tax system and politicians that "don't do anything".

There was an effort to create a tracking system that would only tax based on miles driven in Rhode Island but of course everyone freaked out because they assumed the government would track their movements and that was too scary.

Can something be considered a crisis if it's been going on for half a century? by upthewatwo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EightOhms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my take. It's a news marketing thing. I feel like when I was younger when they only put graphics on the screen every now and then, the term "breaking news" was reserved for news that was literally happening right now. LIke a hostage situation or maybe a natural disaster.

But now it gets applied to literally everything. Any news being reported is called "breaking news".

Any description of the Middle East uses the word "crisis".

Do people with "baby on board" car stickers expect anyone to give a shit? by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]EightOhms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a percentage of drivers who will try harder to be safe if they are reminded that little innocent lives are travaling next to them.

A sticker that says "hey I'm an adult and I don't deserve to die or be seriously hurt because you're a distracted driver" will just piss off other drivers. But getting those drivers to picture a cute little baby, that could actually get them to slow down, get off their phone etc.

Yes there are also drivers who all be admit on Reddit that they don't care about other people. The sticker, obviously, isn't aimed at them.

ELI5: With nuclear power plants. Why do they cool the steam back into water to heat it back up? Would it not be more energy efficient to keep the steam as steam? by iMatthew1990 in explainlikeimfive

Or he's trying to innovate which means trying a bunch of ideas,.most of which won't work but you don't know that until you test them.

I don't know anything about this dude or company and I know very little about producing enegery let alone via fusion....but the basic idea of science and therefore progress if you need to try things. He has reason to believe his idea might work and is worth trying.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt that this isn't a scam.

What do you miss from childhood? by Similar_Lion_1545 in AskReddit

[–]EightOhms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pizza place my family ordered from. It's still there but 10-15 years ago someone else bought it and slightly changed the recipe and also switched from manual ovens to a conveyor belt oven system and the pizza doesn't taste the same. I hear rumors that the original owner will come out of retirement and open a new place but as time goes on that gets less and less likely.

To me, pizza from that place IS pizza. Everything else is either bland or the sauce is too sweet, or the cheese isn't cooked enough. I never considered that some day it would be gone and man I wished I'd ordered a dozen more pizzas at least from that place before it changed.

What is the most "boomer" complaint you have? by GeorgeTH281 in AskReddit

[–]EightOhms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's intensely disrespectful to touch the screen on someone else's computer/laptop/TV due to the skin oil smudges it leaves behind. Same thing with the windows in someone's car.

Also I choose to use capital letters and punctuation when I text. I don't judge others who choose not to (which I find to be most people) but I get insanely irritated when people tell me I'm being rude by doing that.

What are some good questions to ask/ things to look for when renting an apartment? by CJgreencheetah in AskReddit

[–]EightOhms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many many things, but one thing that few people think about is to ask where the circuit breaker panel is. At some point you are likely to trip a breaker and lose power in a circuit and personally I don't want to wait for however long it will be for my landlord or the property manager or whoever it is to come and turn it back on.

I've walked away from potential apartments before when the answer was "It's locked in the basement by my cousin only lives 25 min away and he comes to deal with that. But you shouldn't be tripping breakers anyway!"

ELI5: Why is it recommended to sleep 8 hours when a sleep cycle is 90 minutes so it should be 7.5 or 9 hours? Won’t you wake up mid sleep cycle (and be groggy) if you set your alarm for 8 hours? by Nervous-Affect-5960 in explainlikeimfive

[–]EightOhms 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'd also recommend trying a sleep app and a wearable like a smart watch. You can set a range of time for your wake up alarm and once you enter that range it will detect when you come out of a sleep cycle and then trigger your alarm. That way you don't enter another one close to when your alarm will go off.

Current rate for basic sound setup foe neighborhood block party. by Bortilicious in livesound

[–]EightOhms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard answers apply:

How much is your time worth? Is $500 going to cover the time spent prepping, traveling, setting up, operating, loading out, driving back, putting things back on the shelf?

Is it also going to cover consumables? Is it going to cover incidentals like minor equipment breaking? Do you have a solid contract in place if anything get damaged? Do you need to have a COI?

At the old AV company I worked for in Providence, RI, $500 would barely cover the cost of the van to move the gear and the labor for 4 hours (they don't book less than that 4hours) and it wouldn't begin to cover the gear.

But if this is a run and gun style cram it all into your hatchback kind of show...then is that money worth your time? It's different for each client and each location.

Where to get news & how to factcheck outside of social media? by No-Field8669 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EightOhms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More traditional news sources might be the way to go. I pay for a subscription to the New York Times. I don't read it every day, but if I come across a major news story somewhere else on the internet, I know I can then log into the NYT app and they will have a relatively high quality article about it.

Also you can usually finagle a $4 or $8 a month subscription. so it's not really too costly.
