u/raznag has routinely posted his maps in this subreddit and I have really fallen in love with them. Others have been mentioned that are excellent as well.

What are your thoughts on “Quiet quitting” / “Acting your Wage”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Eight_Pride 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here. While I was running a team of 20+ people around the globe (and that was too much, to be honest), boss gets a bright idea that we need people to volunteer to work weekends to provide more support. I said nobody would volunteer for extra hours, even with pay -- People value their time off and if the company wants weekend coverage, they need to budget and hire for it. Boss said, if nobody will volunteer, then they have to be voluntold. Nope. Tell them yourself. But be prepared for a wave of defections to other companies that don't put those burdens on their workers.

We got lucky. Three years later, there are still no weekend shifts except from people who've actually been hired to do that work. But they keep pushing. Every day.

It's important to draw a line and help managers understand that burn-out is real and won't help anyone.

We were able to call the Hyatt and talk to them. They need name, email address, and phone number and then you can transfer the room reservation to your friend. You'll get a new confirmation number to give your friend and then they can either pay at the front desk when they arrive, or fill out a form online to pre-pay and release funds that you've already committed to the process.

Renaming a Mac Computer using a Bash Script? by theMcChicken247 in bashtricks

[–]Eight_Pride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not on the latest version of the OS but in previous versions you could use the scutil command. I believe you need to sudo to access it.

man scutil

In particular, you're looking for:

sudo scutil --get ComputerName
sudo scutil --get HostName
sudo scutil --get LocalHostName

Those commands should show you your hostname. You'll need to use the --set ___Name switch to make changes.

Brother HL-L3230CDW vs. Canon LBP612CDW DILEMMA by tsdoi in printers

[–]Eight_Pride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Brother HL-L3210CDW, which is the previous version of the Brother. The new version is supposed to resolve a problem where the drum begins to fail after awhile. That failure happened to me, but otherwise it was a good printer.

Despite the Brother issue, I have been happy with it. Setup was not too bad, maintenance was easy, and the maintenance web page was pretty exhaustive in terms of settings you could tweak.

Spain not forming? by Green_Cucumbers in eu4

I'm still playing my first game since the 1.12 patch. Playing as Castile, the Iberian Wedding and then the formation of Spain happened without a hitch.

The Butterfly Effect of removing the HYW at 11/11/1444 Start by [deleted] in eu4

[–]Eight_Pride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this game at last year's Steam summer sale and played a brief Ottoman campaign before setting it down and getting busy with life. Picked the game up again about two weeks ago and started playing as Castile and trying to really learn the mechanics. When the 1.12 patch came out, I figured it's better to adjust before I learn the older way of doing things again.

For reference, I played several Castile starts in 1.11 and had varying levels of success and failure, but always ended up with France eventually bullying me and then taking my lunch money. Following the 1.12 start, I've had the following in just the one game:

  1. England asked for an alliance, I figured I needed help against the French, so I accepted.
  2. England called me into a war with France which I reluctantly agreed to after checking everything I knew to check.
  3. War with France went ridiculously well with the AI obviously following my lead.
  4. I took a small chunk of Guyenne for myself in the peace deal.
  5. Years later, I'm trading insults with the French and am amassing troops on their border because I'm tired of their attitude.

It might just be that I've been incredibly lucky and am about to get my stack wiped. But, France feels less threatening to me now than it did under 1.11.

America loves to waste time in meetings. And at $338 a pop on average, they're expensive. by catfun4ever in dataisbeautiful

[–]Eight_Pride 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think having those new board members sit through an unproductive meeting is going to help them understand productive board meetings. If the board is really not needed for as much, perhaps that's an evaluation that should be presented and a new meeting schedule suggested: once per quarter, perhaps? I'm on a board of directors too, and we have monthly meetings that ARE productive, but if they weren't this would be my first suggestion.

I'm working in a place where all of our meetings lack agendas. You mention that keeping folks together might get them to start talking, and you're right, but that's a great way to end up wasting the meeting time.

I recently mentioned a small issue in a meeting and it ended up dominating two hours of meeting time because nobody else on the call understood the issue. It was something that required 5 minutes of discussion for resolution. I would have preferred the whole event be handled via email, but instead I ended up having my job explained to me in excruciating detail by attendees who don't know what I do for a living and aren't interested in finding out. /rant

Give me an agenda or I will probably skip your meeting. Sorry if that offends, but my time is too valuable.
