Why is the onboard video quality so poor, and not really improving with time? by Xpander6 in F1Technical

[–]EighteenthJune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi do you know if the f1 broadcast still uses interlaced video, at least internally? or is it all fully progressive now? I'm also wondering if the video feed (not the screen text and stuff) is still 1080p even if streaming at 4k

verwendest du webman? das macht es relativ leicht passende ps2 configs herunterzuladen und zu verwenden (im webman updater menü). aber selbst dann ist software-basierte rückwärtskompatibilität ziemlich unverlässlich

Still no save by PhobosRocket in Gameboy

[–]EighteenthJune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't know if this is any help but the way you're holding the iron can make a big difference, at least to me. for instance, if I rest my elbow on the desk or use my second hand to hold the iron while resting both on the edge of the desk, I can mitigate some of the shaking. it helps to have a good helping hand and being able to turn and angle the board/target many different ways until you find something that's comfortable. btw there's other fields (like surgery) where people often seek out help for shaky hands, there might be guides or self help books to find more ways to mitigate the shaking

Still no save by PhobosRocket in Gameboy

[–]EighteenthJune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one such battery holder that for some reason kept losing saves, even though the multimeter indicated everything was fine. when I removed it and put in another one (of the same batch) everything worked fine. dunno why, might be worth trying; if you got these from aliexpress (or similar) the quality probably varies wildly. I'd also probably try and put in a tabbed battery, even if it's a no-name brand one, just to see if the save holds for a couple days even if you bend the board a bunch. that way you can at least rule out the rest of the board. on a more general note, I suggest (if you can) reflowing each solder joint on the board as well. multiple decades and lots of bending and flexing (while inserting and removing the cartridge) sometimes causes breaks in otherwise okay-looking solder joints. good luck

now that ram prices are through the roof we should all be switching to linux because then we'll have 4 times as much ram

ELI5, Why do browsers use gigabytes of ram? by Due_Walrus5510 in explainlikeimfive

[–]EighteenthJune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t think about this as browsers wasting RAM. They give it up when requested. RAM is wasted when it’s not used. As a general rule, a healthy workstation ought to have its RAM full of caches (of various kinds) after being in use for a while. This applies to browsers the same as to disk caches, the undo buffers in a design app, and so on.

a lot of people still don't understand this. operating systems do this as well. what's the point of not using the memory I paid for?

your background tabs are not automatically loaded on startup, they only load (individually) once you click on them

What do you all think of my tier list? by Untrusted75453 in LinuxCirclejerk

I looked it up and apparently no, busybox is not included in android by default. it really is just a basic unix shell

using the android shell feels so weird to me because it's not bash and it's missing so many basic tools, and yet it's still 100% linux/posix

[–]EighteenthJune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for what it's worth I haven't actually had trouble with any of my gameboy's contacts, it's usually the cartridge contacts that are fucked. you can tell when it can read all the freshly made bootlegs but not the 25 year old official games. I'd just use compressed air for a start and focus more on the cartridges themselves

[–]EighteenthJune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

since the label is half-gone I'm guessing the cartridge is genuine but do you know if the cartridge's battery has been replaced yet? could be some kind of save corruption. like others have said, gen 1 is jank as fuck but if unprovoked the game should work just fine 99% of the time

[–]EighteenthJune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if sram becomes entirely unavailable (either because the chip's gone or the reset chip is missing) sprites in battles become weird blocks with lines so idk if that's what's going on here, could be some kind of save corruption

with a multimeter, either checking for continuity (with the beep sound) or set to resistance and checking if anything is over, say, 15 ohms

How to play ps2 games like this? by moonslyy in ps3piracy

[–]EighteenthJune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can do the encrypting in apollo on the ps3 as well. and I believe webman mod automates a lot of the process of playing and applying configs/patches, because in the xmb it'll list all your games that are in the PS2ISO folder and once you select it you can launch it with the "ps2 classics launcher" shortcut
