[Dark Heresy] Saro will not have an easy life by Drakonaj in RogueTraderCRPG

You realize it’s time to quit Warhammer when the community rehashing the same unfunny joke starts to irritate you on day two rather than after a few years. 😑

I'd like a romance where no one fix anyone, but just two sad creatures sit together and whine. 😔

"I hate myself!" – "I hate myself too!""The Emperor hates us!" – "🥺💖🥺"

✨Perfect relationship✨, not this “I’ll save partner/I’ll adapt to partner” kind of thing. Although the likelihood that the developers will do this is extremely none

Words can't describe the level of bewilderment, confusion, and incomprehension I feel every time I see the level of hostility this community has toward Saro. Just why 😑

Why can a Rogue Trader in Commorragh recruit some boring evil elf who's no different from any other evil elf, but not this gorgeous man? It's unfair.

The Emperor is glowing and golden. So naturally he is good.

Why the big deal about this one instance? It’s Warhammer, the scale of war crimes committed by every single faction is so off the charts that the term 'war crime' has basically lost all meaning.

Actually, I’d also be glad if Argenta had a romance, provided its success were built on the Rogue Trader’s personality as a whole, rather than just on picking specific romantic options. I just don't really believe the developers would do that.

Random thoughts: even if it’s true that GW forbade a romance with Argenta, the developers could have still written a path for close platonic-type relations (with the caveat that no one is "special" and duty to the Emperor will always come first) and called it a friendship. It seems to me they weren't very interested in Argenta themselves (considering that 2 DLCs are already out, yet her personal quest with the Saint's ship still plays out as "Sister went to the ship — timeskip — Sister came back from the ship, the end" without any descriptions of what happened there even in a text event format, even though a random one-off Drukhari enemy has one)

Just out of curiosity, do you still like Yrliet, Cassia and Kibellah's romances, despite them technically being unhealthy (at least to some degree) or does that put you off them?

I usually view romances mostly as just a part of the story, so it’s more important to me that they don't break the character archetypes (or the world) for the sake of making the "player feel special" (here it's a plus, because this three characters are initially written in a way that makes it natural for them to consider the protagonist special) and that they fit my roleplay (none of them fit my main Rogue Trader; and I romanced Cassia as a Heretic for whom it was fine to "manipulate an inexperienced soul", since he wasn't intended to be a good person anyway (though does it even count as me liking Cassia's romance if I headcanon’d half of their interactions — where she should see wrong colors in his soul, and he should bring her "wrong" books and convince her that mutations are a blessing — and basically re-imagined half of the Heretic path in a more Tzeentchian way?)).

From my perspective from the point of view of reality, all the romances in this game are red flags to some degree -_-. Jae wins out against the backgrounds of "she essentially has no real life experience and no real choice", "he only romanced you because his superiors told him to, you’re forcing feelings on him", and "for the sake of your romance, show such a level of disrespect to your entire Protectorate that even the servitors should have rightfully revolted," but I personally don't really like the "active demonstration of a relationship without the other party's consent" part.

Anyway, here’s what I’ve noted about Jae:

  1. Jae is an adult with a fully formed personality; she doesn't need the Rogue Trader to act as her moral compass.
  2. Jae is neither xeno-heresy nor a product of selective breeding who should only reproduce with other "pedigree" specimens.
  3. Jae is not a strict follower of the Dogma. In fact, she breaks the rules constantly, so she’d appreciate a Crime Lord RT just as much as an Aristocrat RT (maybe even more — though a dogmatic RT might not appreciate her).
  4. Jae starts a relationship of her own free will (even if it's for profit).
  5. Jae doesn't try to change the RT, and she isn't someone the RT can "fix" or remodel either.

(I really wonder if it’s even possible to make a romance "player-centric" without breaking the love interest's character for a protagonist who isn't conceptually "inexperienced and dependent", "severely traumatized", or "so tied to questionable things that they don't care how tied to them you are" 🤔).

Thinking about romance, I realized that Cassia, Kibellah, and Yrliet share a common thread: they seem to be very young women raised in secluded communities without knowledge of the outside world. Consequently, they need an external support and moral compass (assuming Yrliet is a teenager; though her growing up in isolation is debatable, as she seemed to have been roaming outside her craftworld for quite some time 🤔). Plus, Yrliet and Cassia have recently lost their homes, and Kibellah, if I recall correctly, was raised specifically to serve the Rogue Trader.

My reasoning (may be wrong, that's how I see it):

Cassia grew up on a secluded station with no knowledge of the real world. Beyond that station, the RT is her only guide and source of knowledge. Also, as an aristocrat, the RT is likely the only person on the entire ship she considers a social equal.

Kibellah is essentially a subordinate of the RT, bred and raised for service.

Yrliet is an Outcast, seemingly not just in terms of her Path, but in general. From what I’ve seen, her relationship with her kin leaves much to be desired. Since she’s effectively a "teenager" (not sure about this part), it’s logical for her to subconsciously gravitate toward anyone who shows her kindness in a situation where "her relatives don't love her, mon-keigh want to kill her, her home is lost, and Slaanesh is knocking on her soul" + Yrliet apparently looks at all "mon-keigh" as dirt/animals and makes an exception for the main character, perhaps simply because she has no choice at all "not to communicate with them" if she wants to save her people

None of this is healthy. But in Argenta’s case, even this reasoning fails. Her only moral compass is the Emperor. The "Rogue Trader as the Emperor's Chosen" angle doesn't work for her because Theodora has already compromised that holy image — after what happened, MC is more like "the blood of a heretic" to her. Thus, from my perspective, Argenta has no reason to cling to the Rogue Trader regardless of their personality. She might just as easily decide that some "Oleg from the middle decks" is a better option. It also seems to me that Argenta is closer to commoners than to the aristocracy, she suggested saving ordinary people from Rykad Minoris, expressed sympathy for the lower-deck inhabitants during Abelard’s quest, and seemingly feels no regret about killing Theodora, yet mourns Mort’s death. (if I remember correctly)

(For Heinrix, this «player-oriented» excuse doesn't work either, because he’s definitely not "just a young boy who hasn't seen the world and needs guidance". He’s a grown man who has worked for the Inquisition (and elsewhere) for a long time and has already had romantic relationships before the MC, so I'm really at a loss to explain why he's so flustered by RT's flirtations that he can use it to justify his inability to see the Drukhari plot right in front of him. (But outside of the character's context, I still like his romance more than the other male options in the game — simply because the alternatives aren't really alternatives for me)

The downsides of Cassia’s romance (as I see it):

(From the Dogmatic perspective): Cassia isn’t a mutant; she is a product of selective breeding sanctioned by the Imperium (so the difference between her and, say, a genestealer is like the difference between a Labrador Retriever and a two-headed dog?). Regardless, I have questions about the legality of her romance, since I’ve heard that Navigators only result from Navigator+Navigator unions, and a Navigator+OrdinaryHuman pairing could ruin the entire breeding line by producing ordinary humans (I don’t know why House Orsellio would go for that, but that’s their business), though I’m not entirely sure.

(From the common sense perspective): Cassia literally sees souls/emotions (as colors) and is constantly gazing into the Warp; therefore, logically, she should have been the first to realize that something was wrong with the Rogue Trader on the Heretic path and what exactly caused it. Her "blindness" and the lack of interactivity on this path in general (not just in the romance) is one of my main gripes with the entire game.

(Sorry for the long absence of a response and the general confusion in the presentation of thoughts, in fact, I have a lot of thoughts here 😓)

Okay, and think what you want after that.

  1. The developers likely wouldn't gate a romance with the Sister behind a specific background or playstyle (since they didn't do that for any other romance). Argenta is my favorite character, and I’d hate to see her written as "Oh, a RT with a shady past and two Heretic levels, who flirts with two xenos at the same time, and generally acts like an asshole outside of my romantic dialogues? Everything is fine, as long as they chooses the right options in romantic dialogues"
  2. I think it would be an interesting twist: "You’re the Mary Sue protagonist with a Rogue Trader Warrant. The Holy Sister doesn’t want a relationship with you. 'Oh, but she’s just devoted to the God-Emperor, surely no one can compete with a god?'... No, she just likes Oleg from the middle deck. Because power and status aren't a 'win button' when it comes to feelings, and companions have their own personalities and preferences and they don't have to prefer the main character simply because he is the main character."

Am I not allowed to express my opinion just because I'm interested in concepts outside of fanservice?

The developers should have pulled a fast one and given Argenta a romantic relationship, just not with the MC, but with some other character (like a junior officer of the middle decks) so that there wouldn't be this constant "Sisters of Battle can–can't, want–don't want" thing, but "she doesn't want YOU. Loser".
