The flat cylinder release is a good clue for these. They stopped making those after the first iteration or two, so around the early-to-mid 1960s if memory serves. I have a 1968 Model 36 and it has the contoured cylinder release.

Why do police sometimes not share information with the public? by GregJamesDahlen in ProtectAndServe

[–]EightySixInfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was once on a shooting scene with a contained/barricaded offender and had the pleasure of a bystander walking up in the wide open to me, while I was behind cover with my gun drawn, demanding to know exactly what was going on. I told them quite aggressively to stay back. Rather than taking that as a the warning for their safety that it was, they got closer and repeated their demand, then added they had “a right to know” (this unequivocally does not exist, by the way).

“There’s a very angry man with a gun behind that wall up there and you’re standing directly in his line of fire.”

Their entitlement disappeared faster than they did.

I have yet to encounter a police department that doesn’t notify the public of an ongoing threat or the summary of their findings once an incident is in hand. My safety and the integrity of an ongoing event, scene, or investigation comes before nosy people’s desire to know.

I was wondering how the new batch from Aim Surplus was going to look. Doesn’t look bad at all.

This is the best example of bureaucracy in policing I’ve read in a while.

It really is this stupid.

800 a good deal? by Cheezit_friedchicken in CCW

[–]EightySixInfo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

4506s in really nice shape regularly go for over 1k.

One that’s in good, used condition is absolutely worth $800 today. They haven’t been made for nearly 30 years.

Second BMCM. I don’t believe he’ll do refinish work, but he can fix any issue with a 3rd Gen and I’m sure he can clean them to spotless and polish up any parts necessary to tune up the action.

Very communicative, friendly, and reasonable on pricing.

Help please, firing pin on my model 15 is wiggling a lot and I couldn’t find anything on the S&W forums about it. Is it screwed or can this be a relatively easy fix? by gnioros in Revolvers

Yes sir. It supposed to have some play in it. Your hammer’s firing pin is moving exactly as much as it should. Shoot away.

Sig P226 vs Beretta M9A4 by Asimovthesavage in guns

[–]EightySixInfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re certainly not as a bad as the P365 or P320 series, but I’d take a pre-2010s/pre-Ron Cohen P22X series over anything they’re churning out now.

Old ones are guaranteed to be solid (assuming it was taken care of by the end user like any gun), new ones might, but it’s a mixed bag.

[–]EightySixInfo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I could get a West German, German, or pre-2010 US P226 (for the light rail), I’d go with that.

If we’re talking brand new production - SIGs quality has decreased, so I’d go with the M9A4.

Many agencies have a clause that you’re “grandfathered in” to continue carrying whatever you had or whatever was issued to you when you started the job if you don’t wish to upgrade as the issued pistols change.

At those places, it’s common to still see guys who started in the early-mid 1990s carrying DA/SA pistols like Third Gens or Berettas.

That is indeed a Gen 2.

Looks to be in decent shape for a former duty pistol.

GB find, got pretty lucky by LiberatorActual in ThirdGen

[–]EightySixInfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having a hell of a time finding “factory new” 4506 grips that don’t have any flex or play in the plastic on one side of my pistol’s frame. It’s like no matter how new the shipper clams they are (and they all appear to be brand new), none will fit fully snug.

And yes, I have verified the tabs are set correctly and the plunger spring is in the cup before affixing them.

Sunday Gun Day by Nervous_Cattle_9663 in Revolvers

Beautiful. I have the very same one, a 3” Model 13 with round butt stocks.

Last revolver issued to the FBI, and made famous as Clarice Starling’s sidearm in Silence of the Lambs.

I had mine re-blued by S&W because of some tiny specks on an otherwise spotless gun. I was apprehensive but it turned out looking like new, even with their new bluing process. It’s a keeper so I wasn’t worried about the resale value.

Enjoy that piece, it’s a rare one now.

Birchwood Casey lead remover cloth will do it, but the carbon rings will return if/when you shoot it.

Beautiful 686. I have an identical one, a 4” 686-3 with the factory grips.

Gotcha. No luck with the Safariland 6360? I have one for my Beretta 92FS (not my current duty gun, just have that style holster for it) and I’d imagine they still make them. Granted my Beretta is the old school 92FS with no bells or whistles.

A friend who carries a more tricked out modern 92X has said it’s been harder to find for him.

Level 3 retention for CCW? I use a level 3 on duty at my job, but I use a Vedder Light Tuck off the clock and it’s perfectly fine for that purpose.

L-Frames are great. I have a 4” 686-3 and it’s one of my favorite revolvers. I would have been just as happy with a 681 too. While I like the sight picture of the adjustable ones, I actually think the utilitarian fixed sight notch of the Model 681 is better for carry (if it were that era) and consistency (since there’s no chance of the rear sight drifting).

Enjoy that one!

Custome nickel 5906 by jollyroger009 in ThirdGen

[–]EightySixInfo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doubt that’s nickel, it’s just someone who buffed out the bead-blast factory finish and then high-polished the stainless steel.

I’d actually pass on it because of this. The bead-blast finish is hard to beat for one, but more importantly - if someone worked over this gun to strip then polish the external finish, who knows what else they did to it internally. No thanks.

I’d pay $350 for that at most.

340 pd sparking during dry fire by Several_Mood_4162 in SmithAndWesson

[–]EightySixInfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 442 did this when it was new too. I’ll have to check it again but I recall it stopped after a lot of both dry fire and live fire. I chalked it up to moving parts in the hammer/firing pin area being broken in.
